Subway riders befriended a cute little bug on the train
Bugs on the New York City subway system rarely get the star treatment, but one lucky insect got vaulted to fame on Thursday when passengers discovered it on their train.
Instead of meeting an instantaneous, gruesome death at the hand, shoe, or newspaper of a commuter, something weird happened to the little green creature. Not only was it spared, but passengers actually picked it up and held it in their hands. Samantha Ruddy caught the wholesome moment and shared it for the entire Twitterverse to enjoy.
“New York is the dumbest and I love it,” Ruddy said on Twitter. Ruddy told Mashable in a DM that they first noticed the bug crawling on the striped-shirt-man’s backpack.
Ruddy added, “[I]t crawled on his foot and he got kind of nervous because nobody knew what kind of bug it was but then the kid with the blonde hair came over and told us it was harmless and picked it up with his hand and then we all just passed it off to each other until we got to union square and he released it."
Though bugs give plenty of people the heebie jeebies, this one isn't nearly as bad as most subway riders. It doesn’t take up much room. It isn’t loud. And it’s certainly not going to curse you out if you accidentally bump into it. What can we say? Bugs apparently have excellent subway etiquette.
Oh — except it did poop on someone, according to Ruddy. Maybe it got a little nervous?
But come on, you can’t tell me you wouldn’t be a bit distressed, too, if random people started picking you up and holding you while snapping your picture on the Q train. So I think we can be a little forgiving.

ReplyDeleteAww that’s so cute...I had the same, but it was a cockroach and every one took turns laughing at people screaming, then screaming because it was making a B line for them.
ReplyDeleteNO.
ReplyDeleteCute! But also you are cute and I love your glasses. (This tweet has a very "drunk ladies in the bathroom at a concert" vibe sorry.)
ReplyDeleteIt’s a katydid!
ReplyDeleteSo wild, because we found one at our house this week here in california, and a ton of friends have been posting pix of spotted katydids all week - and now this!?
ReplyDeleteHere in Brazil we call this bug "esperança" (hope), and when you see one of them, it means something very good is coming up for you, especially if it lands on you, and killing it brings bad luxk
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing and the opposite of what happened when a cockroach fell on me on the N train
ReplyDelete“Ladies and gentleman. I am sorry to disturb you. I am a good grasshopper. I don’t want to be here doing this but I got sick and my landlord threw me and my kids out last night. If you have a spare dollar or quarter or penny to give me I would appreciate your help.”

ReplyDeleteAww! I had one of these sneak into my apartment a few years ago. Did it fly? Mine did. Ended up catching it with an old cleaned-out Talenti container and releasing it to the leefy wilds of Albany.
ReplyDeleteI love this.

ReplyDeleteThe normal reaction would be to be "freaking out" about a grasshopper? New York may really be the dumbest, as you say.
