Elon Musk announces that the Tesla Model S Plaid+ is 'canceled'

Elon Musk has announced the cancellation of Tesla's Plaid+ electric car, saying there is "no need" for it because the standard Plaid is already a standout.

Of course, because he is Elon Musk, the announcement was made via a casual post on his personal Twitter.

"Model S goes to Plaid speed this week," Tesla's CEO tweeted on Sunday. "Plaid+ is canceled. No need, as Plaid is just so good."

The Tesla Model S Plaid is an upcoming electric sedan scheduled to begin rolling out on June 10. Demanding the steep price of $119,990, the car boasts an estimated range of 390 miles on one charge, and is purportedly capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under two seconds.

"Quickest production car ever made of any kind," Musk wrote in a subsequent tweet. "Has to be felt to be believed."

The $149,990 Plaid+ was touted as an upgrade to the Plaid, having a range over 520 miles and an acceleration speed even quicker than that of the Plaid. It was scheduled for release next year, but as noted by CNET, Tesla's website actually stopped accepting preorders of the Plaid+ in May — a hint that something was up.

It's currently unclear what will happen concerning orders which have already been made, however it's likely Tesla will give buyers the option to purchase the Plaid instead.

Musk's bold claims regarding the Plaid's record breaking speed may very well be true when measuring speed by acceleration. The current speed record for a production car is held by the 2020 SSC Tuatara, which hit speeds of 282.9 miles per hour. However, while the Tesla Plaid's top speed is purportedly only 200 miles per hour, its rapid acceleration puts it at the top of the pack in that category.

Most drivers won't have any need to accelerate so quickly, or have the empty, open roads to do so safely. Still, it will no doubt thrill Tesla enthusiasts to say they have the fastest car around.

  1. Who pays $119,900 for a car? This is a mortgage on a small house?

  2. So I guess that means ROADSTER is next to be canceled right? I really like his cars but why tell ppl ur gonna have this and that only to say later on it isn’t needed when what he’s really saying is it can’t be done because it can’t get through the testing phase! SHUT UP @elonmusk

  5. No need for the Plaid +? More like overpromise and couldn't deliver. Not surprised. Yet that BOT Ian3226 will still have something to say hahaha

  6. About the endurance.
On a single charge, how far can a Tesla run non-stop under any of the following conditions?

    - Towing a trailer, 1,200. - 1,500. Lbs?
    - Four occupants?
    - Average speed of 75 mph for 5-7 hours?

  7. Something went sideways in the dev cycle. No one, ever, has said "the product is ready for launch, but it is just too good, so we decided not to launch it". Does Elan just think everyone else in the world is an idiot?

  8. Just another example of Elon over promising and under delivering.

  9. Incentives? You mean how "the little people" are made to ante up to help the wealthy pay for cars so expensive that only those rich people can afford?

  10. I wish tesla wasn't the face of EV's because their turbulence makes people think all EV companies are this flaky.

  11. Musk is a national treasure. From a dead start he created a new category of vehicle that perform better than all other four door sport sedans in the world, and they are getting better. Tesla is now well established and has avoided the typical fate of one hit wonders like the DeLorean and others. I could go on. We are lucky to have him.

  12. Don't care about the loss of performance from the Plaid + but the loss of range is a deal breaker for me, 390 when 520 was doable Tesla truck has better range >.<. All EV range estimates are for perfect conditions. Like not running the AC or the heater or the wipers, or anything else other than driving the expressway on the level with nothing else being on.

  14. Towing is still the domain of ICE cars over distances, even Ford tells you to buy the Hybrid F-150 rather than the Electric.

    2. Isn't that Steve's point? If you have a 500 mile EV, it does not have to be. Sure, you would halve that range, but at 250 miles it is still sufficient to tow an RV for the weekend away.

    1. May not be the case. People who use public chargers need high efficiency with reasonable range. Lighter Model 3 vs. heavier Model S with more range... The same charging time at an L2 station means more distance for Model 3 than S. Supercharger is fine, but actually there are many L2 chargers we can use at various business establishment.

  17. Agreee Steve 100% plus in Germany, that extra range allows sensible range to be achieved at sustained Autobahn speeds. I suspect that this is not really about range from Tesla, it means they are not yet ready to scale the pilot plant for the 4680 cells. So that means Roadster, CTruck and Class 8 all sliding backwards too....

    1. Yeah, the line "you don't really need 500+ miles of range" sound like a "rationalization" when the real reason is battery constrain...

    1. How honest the laugher will be when they can't deliver a single car this year due to production hell, short on Saudi money or ending up on the short end of the components & chip shortage stick? This particularly hits start-ups cause they have zero negotiating power over influential big players overpaying and overordering, which is factually suffocating small to even mid-size businesses.

Also, how much will they lose per car with the extra costs of limited production plus much higher 2021 components and battery prices? Will they raise prices or suck up the losses? Air has 33% more battery than Plaid alone so they're gonna have to overpay that much more. If they are lucky, a dozen or so Airs will be delivered. I don't think they are laughing...

  19. Here in Croatia cell coverage is very good, I can’t think of place that does not have it. Bit, still….

Regarding other points you made, which is all factual and reasonable, I have to add that probability of that events is really small. Going empty with sparse coverage of charging places is, still, orders of magnitude more probable.

  20. That is true with ICEVs as well.

  25. That has to be a pretty serious miscalculation then xD

It could happen that if you drive on really tight margins and end up in lots of rain, that you end up a kilometer or two from a charger. That is not what I would call stranded in the "wilderness" for "days".

  27. Sure you can. The issue is road trips. For round town type of trips, noth8ng better than a BEV. The toss up is long runs at speed with load . Even though I’ve got a Tesla, for road trips, the ICE is still the better way to go.

  28. Why not tow with a 3? Why is the S still lacking a towbar? These are relevant questions too!

  29. I completely agree, its definitely not the single stint. I do beleive that 500miles rated would be about perfect with carrying around excessive and expensive batteries. From there on in, the improvement has to come from chemistry. Basically 120kWh and keep trying to make it lighter, smaller and cheaper.

  30. IMHO there are several reasons for this announcement 1.plaid+ was killing plaid orders book. 2. tesla has enough orders for plaid and it makes no sense for them to start production of plaid+ at this moment, becuase it requires complete rework with structural battery. 3. structural battery for S/x is in works but Tesla decided that advantages of having lighter vehicle with less battery like better hadling, higher efficiency more room are bigger than adding 25% of range.

    ReplyDelete

    1. If they have enough orders of Plaid, why worry about Plaid+ orders "killing paid order books"? You are contradicting yourself. The simplest answer is that the new batteries are not ready and will not be ready this year with a very "Elon" maybe for next year.
