The amount of people that don’t know how tariffs work concerns me. Apple didn’t raise prices due to tariffs. But tariffs caused the cost of memory to rise. Apple then increased prices due to that. In return you are essentially paying the damn tariff.

Apple paid $200 for memory chip. Apple charged customers $200 for memory chip.
Tariffs caused memory chips to increase to $500. Apple raises prices due to increased cost of memory chip causing customers to pay $500 more.
Government issues Apple refund of tariff money. Apple now essentially only pays $200 for memory chip Apple still charging customers $500 for memory chip.
Apple pockets money. Consumers get bent over again.

Apple did not pay $200 for memory chips. They paid below the cost of manufacturing, and charged customers a higher than retail price.
They were hit with illegal tqrrifs because they don't manufacture in the USA, and they absolutely passed those costs on, by removing RAM options and charging more for less.

Let’s say my car got TBoned by someone else. Total civil action and I sue them and delays on the suit ment that I had to get a new car in the mean time and to make up the difference (because insurance won’t pay until the matter is closed in this case). And because that cost me money I had to raise the fees for my side hustle to get me said car.
The fact that I am now whole again now independently doesn’t negate that I was still harmed and the case still goes on and I get compensated on that end. Due to the other parties delays on paying me back. They are different things legally.
I’ll give you a clearer example. My company entered a contract to provide goods. Between contract and fulfillment, $118,000 was added to our cost in tariff fees by the manufacturer. We were already contractually obligated, the manufacturer was not, so we had to eat the loss. Now the manufacturer is being refunded the tariff fees that got passed on to us. We are the party with the loss, not the manufacturer.
This is one very real scenario out of many and we have lawyers involved.

There should not be any refunds of any tariffs. It's absolutely ridiculous. The taxes were not obviously unauthorized at the time they were put in place. I think this means the courts should limit their rulings to saying whether they taxes continue into the future. Second, and this the egregious part, not Apple or any other pass-through entity actually paid the tax. This is a sales tax refund to 7-11 and not its customers. Horrendous. Kill it with fire.

Even if Apple specifically didn’t raise prices, most companies that are claiming a piece of that $166B did, so overall, from a consumer standpoint, we paid the tariffs.
And if you just want to look at Apple in a vacuum… even if they didn’t raise prices, who paid for all the millions it probably costs to backtrack the entire thing.

According to consumer price index, prices cooled in 2025 compared to 2024. This shows that tariffs were being eaten by a combination of the exporter/importer. The Dems mainstream media fear mongering about "apocalyptic" inflation in 2025 due to tariffs never materialized. It's NOT that they were mistaken. It's that they were LYING when they said it.
So being that the tariffs weren't passed on to consumers, it only makes sense that the refund goes to the businesses.

Indeed it does but you asserted that “prices cooled” when they did not. The rate of price growth cooled slightly for the entire year, but prices nonetheless increased.
The monthly data shows the real story. Trump took office in January 2025 and inherited a multi-year cooling trend. He implemented tariffs in late March and by May the CPI was already climbing. By August even his YOY numbers were worse.

Cook said Apple intends to reinvest the reimbursements back into the United States. The business has already pledged $600 billion for domestic manufacturing over four years. That spending could eventually make Apple's supply chain more resilient. It does little to address the current supply shortfall.

Companies pledge lots of stuff to make Trump happy. Foxconn’s pledge in 2017 to invest $10B and create 13k jobs is now $717m invested and 1.2k jobs, with a pledge to spend and additional $500m and create and additional 1.4k jobs by 2029.
Until Apple actually spend the money, I wouldn’t count on it. Tim Cook knows Trump cares more about the headline and news cycle than the follow through.

But the biggest criticism about this is that Trump hit Biden hard about consumer costs and inflation, then turned around and intentionally increased consumer costs with century-old economic policy.
Their whole comment was a push-back on the "lie" that Trump tariffs are being passed on to consumers. I said what I did to imply that even if what they claimed were true, voters would still be blaming them for the current state of the economy regardless.

ReplyDeleteWhat’s irritating to me is that they (Government) imposed these tariffs, we the consumers ultimately paid the tariffs, as they were passed down, and now the manufacturers ( that marked up the cost) are getting refunded the tariffs that we paid. Make it fugging make sense!

Total civil action and I sue them and delays on the suit ment that I had to get a new car in the mean time and to make up the difference (because insurance won’t pay until the matter is closed in this case). And because that cost me money I had to raise the fees for my side hustle to get me said car.
The fact that I am now whole again now independently doesn’t negate that I was still harmed and the case still goes on and I get compensated on that end. Due to the other parties delays on paying me back. They are different things legally.
I’ll give you a clearer example. My company entered a contract to provide goods. Between contract and fulfillment, $118,000 was added to our cost in tariff fees by the manufacturer. We were already contractually obligated, the manufacturer was not, so we had to eat the loss. Now the manufacturer is being refunded the tariff fees that got passed on to us. We are the party with the loss, not the manufacturer.

DeleteThere should not be any refunds of any tariffs. It's absolutely ridiculous. The taxes were not obviously unauthorized at the time they were put in place. I think this means the courts should limit their rulings to saying whether they taxes continue into the future. Second, and this the egregious part, not Apple or any other pass-through entity actually paid the tax. This is a sales tax refund to 7-11 and not its customers. Horrendous. Kill it with fire.

It cost American consumers money and created a huge disruption for businesses. A total shit show that could have been avoided if anyone with half a brain would stand up to Trump. ReplyDeleteAccording to consumer price index, prices cooled in 2025 compared to 2024. This shows that tariffs were being eaten by a combination of the exporter/importer. The Dems mainstream media fear mongering about "apocalyptic" inflation in 2025 due to tariffs never materialized. It's NOT that they were mistaken. It's that they were LYING when they said it.
So being that the tariffs weren't passed on to consumers, it only makes sense that the refund goes to the businesses.
Apple, by the way, is using this $2 billion to invest in domestic manufacturing.

Isn’t the saying believe not what he says, believe what he does? At least that’s the most common phrase on this sub whenever the president makes a clearly false claim or threatens another country. DeleteCompanies pledge lots of stuff to make Trump happy. Foxconn’s pledge in 2017 to invest $10B and create 13k jobs is now $717m invested and 1.2k jobs, with a pledge to spend and additional $500m and create and additional 1.4k jobs by 2029.

DeleteConsumer prices lagged several months behind tariffs. Anyone arguing that Trump has been good for consumer prices is going to get hit hard at the voting booth. Consumers have had to eat about 55% of tariff costs since late 2025.
But the biggest criticism about this is that Trump hit Biden hard about consumer costs and inflation, then turned around and intentionally increased consumer costs with century-old economic policy.

DeleteNot sure what "poorly implemented" means in your context, but yes, tariff refunds were always going to go to the entities that were directly charged them, which was almost always importing companies at US ports of entry. That's how they were designed to work, because one of Trump's priorities was trying to hide their effect from the low information voting public. Thus his rage at companies like Walmart planning to directly line-itemize tariff charges at retail.

In some instances, companies directly line-itemized tariff charges to pass them on, such as when UPS would itemize tariff charges when billing the consumer for their package delivery. UPS is accepting applications to get those refunded, so they are passing their tariff refunds on to consumers. Amazon is selectively refunding tariffs when it can be proven that a markup was charged due to tariffs specifically. Other companies like Apple and Nintendo are not redistributing tariff refunds.
