Who is 'Black national anthem' singer Andra Day?

For some of the projected 113 million Super Bowl 2024 viewers, the evening has nothing to do with the game. Instead, it's all about the food and the music — and the NFL is supplying the second with flair.

Singer, actor, and activist Andra Day will take the Super Bowl LVIII stage Sunday to perform what is known as the Black national anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The song was written as a poem in 1900 by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson and was used as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights Movement.

AD

Day will be joined by Reba McEntire, who will sing the national anthem, Post Malone, who will sing "America the Beautiful," and Usher, who will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show. Adam Blackstone will produce both Day's "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and McEntire's national album. Shaheem Sanchez will sign "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in ASL.

Likely, this isn't your first introduction to Day, but if it is, buckle up because she has quite a catalog.

Day's initial foray into fame was thanks to her 2016 Grammy-nominated song, "Rise Up," which has over 1 billion streams. Her first-ever feature film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, earned Day an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and two Golden Globes: One for Actress in a Drama Motion Picture and one for Original Song in a Motion Picture. She was also, if you can believe it, a voice actor in Pixar's Cars 3, where she played Sweet Tea.

If you want to watch Day perform on Super Bowl Sunday, you'll need to turn the show on a bit before the Big Game starts, since she's part of the pre-game event on Sun., Feb. 11. You can watch the 2024 Super Bowl and, importantly, all of the entertainment on CBS, Paramount+, live TV streaming services like YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, DirecTV Stream, and Fubo.

The Chiefs vs. 49ers kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Always hilarious that people think the “black national anthem” is something new or recent just because they recently realized black people exist 😂😂😂 We’ve been singing this since 1900, which is crazy because the ACTUAL national anthem wasn’t adopted for the military until 1916 and for the country until 1931.

    2. it’s not the fact that the song has been out for centuries. The fact is that the black community has labeled it the black national anthem. We the white people do not call ours the white people national anthem it’s called the national anthem, which is for everyone, not black, white brown or green. So if there’s a problem with it being called the black national anthem, I believe that’s lays on the Black people’s fault not the white.

      Delete
    3. and now it’s time for you do travel back in time 124 years and take a guess WHY we dubbed ours the “Black” national anthem and haven’t changed despite America adopting its own almost 40 years later and WHILE enforcing statutory segregation and discrimination. Just think for a second and maybe it’ll become clear to you.

      Delete
    4. Maybe you haven’t traveled back far enough. I’m Native American we had songs way before the blacks white or anybody else did, but having been born in the United States my parents before me, we’re proud of our flag an our nation and everyone else born in the United States should also recognize it as they’re only flag and anthem, I don’t care if it was composed yesterday it’s for the American people or those that actually consider themselves American. My father fought for our country and nothing and nobody will ever come before God in my country.🇺🇸

    6. go sniff your tRump teddy bear and pipe down. You're making a fool of yourself. To claim to be a native while embracing a song rooted in white supremacy is wild as hell. All thos "songs" you claim to have had were extinguished in the same way you are trying to do the Black national anthem in the name of assimilation, the same thing you're telling people need to do now. This is how powerful white supremacy is it will have people that have been victims of it upholding it without even realizing it.

      Delete
    7. well I’m so glad you feel that way. The rest of us don’t worship a country that’s treated us like second hand citizens since granting citizenship and as animals prior to that. My father fought for America too…then came back and financed his own college education because the GI Bill free tuition wasn’t available to him as a Black soldier. Then he came up with the money to buy his own house because he couldn’t get a VA loan…this was possible because he started his own pharmacy because nobody would hire a Black pharmacist. So yeah, you can oh say can you see all you want. We’ll lift every voice and sing instead.

      Delete
    8. apparently your father was more American than you are. You suffered nothing but yet here you are the one that’s not grateful for what your father and my father fought for. That’s a shame.

      Delete
    9. and who do you think taught me the black national anthem and how to properly view this country?

      Delete
    10. apparently you didn’t learn the respect for our country that he taught you that he fought for you and for me. If he viewed the country the way you view it, he would not have fought for it. you’re fighting for a race not a country. And I’ll never understand why there’s so much entitlement for those that never lived or lost from our past. We all suffered, but we’re not all looking for restitution. just saying.🤷🏻‍♀️

      Delete
    11. he fought for this country for the benefits and then was denied them. Like almost all Black servicemen. He taught me everything I needed to be successful in this country, starting with the appropriate way to view this place that despises me. And if you want to talk restitution, quite literally every disenfranchised group has actually received that…except guess who?

      Delete
    12. we can sit here and talk this back-and-forth all night. But you’ve got your beliefs. I’ve got mine. But it’s a shame that all the people that believe that their owed something for what their forefathers did it’s a shame I’m gonna stop this conversation respecting your way of thought, and just saying God bless you

Please realize those type of injustices continue even to this day literally all over the world , but is obviously not the norm or practice here in the U.S. for many, many decades.

No matter how much some try to inaccurately & maliciously try to portrait that as the case when it’s obviously not!

Realize historically, Aztecs enslaved, Africans Enslaved, Arabs enslaved, Asians enslaved & that’s just the start of countries & epochs in the first letter of the Alphabet, but certainly not the only cultures that enslaved, abused, tortured & capitalized on the use and abuse of others throughout man kinds time on this planet.

It’s unfortunately a human trait to be cruel and unjust to others and to focus, fixate and live in that or any particular past bad, as if it where today is not only divisive but destructive & simply not a good thing.

This latest truly created additional division, distractions and “indignations” are simply a political tactic being used & implemented to widen the divide in our country & our people for ulterior motives & manipulation.

It’s absolutely not constructive but destructive, but here we are where so much is purposely being refocused on that one issue to obviously distract, divide & definitely not to unite all of us AMERICANS of these UNITED States!

Sadly so many are unable to see bigger pictures or steer clear of manipulation, propaganda & purposeful distractions.

    4. is there a Mexican American Anthem?

What about a Chinese American anthem?

What about an Irish American Anthem?

Is there any other song or lyric in America designated specifically for a particular race?

      Why not?

Why is a hymnal randomly given greater status than any other song, lyric or verse?

Why is it chosen to be elevated to the level of an Anthem for one race versus another?

Why is intentionally trying to separate by race not uniformly condemned.

Sorry, not sorry but basing things solely on any race is wrong and there is nothing else to say about that.

    6. , why are you choosing one particular segment of history to stick to & try to continue to completely relate to modern times when obviously, it’s a far, far different time, country & people?

Did you know the Mexican American war was only 13 years before the Civil War?

The clear fact that war is the exact same historical period of time & was all about US western expansion & annexing (taking) Texas and a HUGE part of Mexico into the Union under false pretenses.

It obviously has had far more lasting effects on a far larger amount of people & the momentum & might of the US & Mexico.

Mexico lost by force and political coercion everything from Texas west and even more states & territory that has helped the US prosper for almost 200 years.

Imagine no California or Texas or Arizona or New Mexico or Nevada, or Utah as well as parts of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma & Wyoming & their economies NOT being part of the US & its economy!

Would Mexico then be the biggest world power if they hadn’t had a huge chunk of their county basically stolen? Would the US just be a mere semblance of itself and a much smaller country with far fewer resources? Of course it would be, no doubt!

Mexico and its many millions have suffered since because of that huge loss of territory & economic might. Billions and trillions of dollars of actual measurable economic growth and might. No conjecture or assumptions needed to know that.

Why chose one historical injustice over another when the other, clearly has had a far greater economic impact on a far, far larger population?
History is not fickle, you are as is the pandering, manipulation, intentional division and distractions all of the latest propaganda & created indignation is all about!

One nation under one anthem and common goal or a divided and fractured one is an obvious difference!

    7. If somebody wants to make a Mexican anthem, they can. If somebody wants to make a Chinese anthem, they can. If somebody wants to make an Irish anthem, they can. Nobody is stopping anyone from making an anthem. Kind of weird to ask such a silly question 😄

    2. Ok. This is a football game, not a Baptist church though. And I live in New Hampshire so unlikely to know that. The NFL is only virtue signalling anyway and I don't watch football, never did. I will google it to see what I missed, I am sure the church version will be better than the NFL game version.
