Grammy Awards 2024: Here's why Jay-Z and Trevor Noah are winning the internet (and we are here for it)

The two stood out during the ceremony, and for good reasons.

No award ceremony is complete without a little drama, and the 66th edition of the Grammys is no different. This year, not only were there some historic wins, but also a few controversial statements from the artists. Amidst these varied viral moments, we are here to discuss standout individuals whose presence has made us ponder the merit set for certain singers.

While Miley Cyrus bagged her first Grammy (in two decades), we saw Taylor Swift become the first artist to have four Album of the Year awards in Grammy's entire history. While the former was celebrated by her fans, the latter's win, especially Jay-Z's acceptance speech, puts a lot of things into perspective. After winning the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Jay-Z spoke about his wife, Beyonce, in his acceptance speech.

“I’m just saying, we want you all to get it right. We love y’all, we love y’all," the artist said. "We want you to get it right—or at least get it close to right," he said. "And obviously, it’s subjective… because it’s music and it’s opinion-based, but some things… I don't want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your metrics, that doesn't work. Think about that. The most Grammys never won Album of the Year.”

For the unversed, Beyonce is the most-nominated female artist in Grammy’s history, holding 88 nominations and 32 awards. Although she has been nominated on multiple occasions, she lost the Album of the Year title to Taylor Swift, Beck, Adele, and Harry Styles. Before Jay-Z, Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs when she went to receive the Video of the Year.

This isn't the first time the Grammy has been called out by artists. The Weeknd and Drake are two more artists of color who went on record to talk about the institution's problematic history when it comes to recognizing and honoring POC singers.

Beyonce's career has seen a rising chart, with the singer's work not only being commercially successful but also critically acclaimed. Moreover, fans were quick to point out how her albums such as Renaissance, Lemonade, Beyonce, and more are being beaten by works of white artists solely based on grossing by numbers. Naturally, the lack of credibility in the metric system at the Grammy is not only frustrating fans but also POC artists. Moreover, the Grammy is not about raising numbers; for that, you have the MTV and the VMA awards. It's high time that the Grammy changes its way, or many more artists of color will begin to boycott it.

While one man defended another artist, there was another uplifting the crowd as a host: Trevor Noah.

Unlike Jo Koy at the Golden Globes, Noah's jokes have been respectful towards each artist, ensuring the artists enjoy their time. For instance, when Swift is late for the ceremony, Noah jokes about how she uplifts the "local economy of each table" she passes by, adding that Lionel Richie is now "Lionel Wealthy." Noah defended Swift following the backlash about the NFL cameras cutting to the starlet. Similarly, when Streep entered late, he praised her, saying: "This Grammy is gonna win an Oscar. I don’t know how, but we just did it. I’d like to thank both academies!” He also applauded Doja Cat, calling her Scarlet album the "best pieces of work" she has ever produced.

Noah and Koy's performances prove that one does not necessarily need to bring down a person, especially a woman, to make the crowd laugh. You can be respectful and still make the whole event even more engaging. As for Jay-Z's speech, let it serve as a reminder that despite the awards being around for over half a decade, racism is still prevalent in the most prestigious parts of society. We hope Noah returns as the Grammys host next year. As for Beyonce, we hope Queen Bee finally achieves the coveted title.

  1. "Album of the Year: Midnights, Taylor Swift

Record of the Year: "Flowers," Miley Cyrus.

What is the difference between an album and record?

  3. Beyoncé is a far better singer than Taylor Swift is or ever will be. Had she been white, she probably would have won the best album of the year. Billie Holliday, the greatest female Blues singer that ever lived also suffered from similar problems even though she was head and shoulders above her fellow white artists.

It is all constructive racism, if you ask me.

  5. Based on the nominations the music industry appears to be focused on songs by/about and for women.

I didn't watch the Grammys, my wife did and she said she usually enjoys it but didn't care much for it.

I'm admittedly an old guy who is driven nuts by talentless hacks who use auto-tune or heavily sample what artists have done before.

  8. Thus far, Taylor Swift is the perfect product created by and for the entertainment industry for itself, that is pretty much it....

Talent aside, she embodies pretty, nice-white, safe, and likeability by most (especially teenybopper’s and little kids).

How could it possibly go wrong? She has managed (via non-stop daily and hourly in-your face media blitz coverage) to make billions upon billions of fans and ultimately dollars for the industry she was created for. Yes, they have succeeded once again.

Well produced musical performances, Noah's hosting was excellent, and even the commercials were interesting - produced solely for the Grammy show.

  14. "Bold speech" indeed.

The Academy has nominated Beyoncé 88 times and given her 32 Grammys, yet her husband whines that there's a bias against her and that they're the victims here.

Beyoncé doesn't compose songs. She can't play a musical instrument or read music. She uses an army of songwriters and producers. She uses Autotune to keep her studio vocals on pitch, and Autocue to help her remember lyrics when performing live. She employs choreographers. She has unlimited financial resources.

Jay-Z moaning that it's unfair that she isn't awarded more prizes is just feeble.

    1. Not far off. Several years ago we saw Beyonce at Staples Center. The entire show except for her greeting the audience and saying goodnight was pre-recorded. We were in a corporate suite and everyone agreed that the dancing was good but not one song or instrument (including performers pretending to play instruments) was live.

  15. Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie Wonder showed what people like JAY Z are missing. The show was a great illustration of the difference between modern pop and the quality of the past. Jay Z rambled, tossed insults, and spoke poorly. I do agree, though, that the album his wife made about his cheating on her should have received more credit.

  24. I found it rather ironic that Jay Z tells the academy to get it right after taking an award named for Dr Dre who has violently assaulted multiple women. The women must feel so betrayed by the academy and the dismissal of their abuse. Beyoncé is an enormous talent and she doesn't need her husband telling the academy to give her the best album award. With his daughter standing next to him he made it about what she hasn't won instead of celebrating the mother and daughter brilliantly performing together during their tour. It was disrespectful and will diminish the award if she does win best album. I'm quite sure she didn't appreciate the Kanye West moment again putting her in an awkward position. If I were her I would be furious. I was so struck by the amazing dancing of bothe mother and daughter on tour. That should have been what was talked about during his speech because she in an incredibly talented woman but also a mother who has raised a stellar young woman who she is obviously so devoted to. Shame on him for diminishing Beyonce's achievements with his daughter by his side.

    1. Every genre in every era has its “garbage”, as well as its excellence. And some of that excellence gets dismissed as “garbage” simply because it doesn’t suit the taste of the listener.

  26. I found the show to be quite entertaining. The Grammy voting body isn't a monolith - whoever wins or is even nominated is meaningless for real music fans, so Jay-Z's comments fell flat for me. Bolstered by the fact that he introduced his daughter Blue Ivy as a Grammy winner (remind me what she has done that wasn't part of her parents' overbearing master plan to fashion her as her mother's successor?). That he can complain that his family doesn't have enough (or the 'right') Grammies onstage, as a literal billionaire, is the ultimate in privilege that has many Americans repulsed by celebrities and their self-aggrandizing award shows. Beyonce has a history of being accused of artistic theft and songwriting by committee, so it is hard to view her as an 'album' artist no matter what Jay-Z thinks. I thought Joni Mitchell's performance was great but she has quite a problematic history with blackface and racial insensitivity. Isn't Lizzo currently being sued for sexual harassment and body shaming? It's interesting that these moments were selected as highlights - seems messy enough for me if you're bothering to look critically at the show. I prefer to just enjoy the performances.

  28. It was a great show EXCEPT for Jay-Z. Such great performances and we're once again reminded of how delusional Beyonce loyalists remain. She doesn't write her own music, she doesn't choreograph, her voice is sub-par and she had trouble selling out only 2 shows at So-Fi. I get it, she has tons of corporate sponsors so they have to say she's getting cheated but enough is enough, she's vastly out of her league when it comes to album of the year, move on and let everyone enjoy the good music.
