Watch the Elon Musk interview that probably ended Don Lemon's partnership with Twitter/X

Musk cancelled Twitter/X's partnership with Lemon hours after it was recorded.

Last week, Twitter/X owner Elon Musk cancelled the platform's partnership with former CNN host Don Lemon. This decision came mere hours after the two had filmed an interview for The Don Lemon Show, a new talk show that would have been exclusive to Twitter/X

Now The Don Lemon Show's premiere episode has been released, offering a look at the footage that may have prompted Musk to bring the collaboration to an unexpected and abrupt end. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't the softball, feelgood chat the billionaire had likely been hoping for.

Released Monday on Twitter/XYouTube, and as an audio podcast, the hour-long interview began cordially enough. Musk largely agreed with Lemon's characterisation of him as a "free speech absolutist," adding the caveat that he was for free speech "as much as possible within the bounds of the law."

However, the interview quickly strayed into more sensitive subjects that had Tesla's CEO noticeably uncomfortable. Musk was demure about his recent meeting with Donald Trump, asserting that the former president did not ask him for money, but declining to provide any detail on exactly what they'd spoken about. Lemon also asked Musk about his sobriety when making controversial statements, prompting the latter to deny any impairment and state that he uses prescription ketamine to help him get out of a "depressive mind state" every other week.

The conversation got even more tense when Lemon questioned Musk on his posting habits, particularly his apparent endorsement of the "great replacement theory" — a conspiracy theory that claims white people are being purposefully replaced by immigrants and people of colour.

Advertisers fled Twitter/X last year after Musk seemed to promote antisemitic conspiracy theories, posting his agreement with a claim that Jewish communities are pushing "hatred against whites." Though Musk later said he was sorry if his post encouraged anti-Semites, he refused to delete the post

"I didn't call it a 'conspiracy,'" Musk told Lemon, stating that he believes the Democratic party has an "incentive" to "usher in" undocumented immigrants to help them win elections. "You don't need a conspiracy in that case because you have a very basic incentive. You could say that I'm wrong about that incentive, but that's my view."

Lemon then questioned Musk about a Twitter/X post which used the phrase "Hispanic invasion," which he reportedly quoted and shared.

"If I quote something, it doesn't mean I agree with everything in it," said Musk. "It's just something that I want — I think this is something worth — people should consider."

"Why would you quote something that you didn't believe in?" asked Lemon.

"Because anything I quote is gonna have a whole range of statements," Musk replied. "It doesn't mean I agree with everything in it."

Musk didn't provide any further clarity as to why he believed "Hispanic invasion" an idea worth considering. He also reacted poorly to Lemon's suggestion that Twitter/X could have better content moderation, which might have prevented him from having to face reporters asking him about racist conspiracy theories.

"I don't have to answer questions from reporters," said Musk, cutting Lemon off. "Don, the only reason I'm doing this interview is because you're on the X platform and you asked for it. Otherwise I would not do this interview."

Considering such contentious exchanges, it's no surprise Musk terminated Twitter/X's partnership with Lemon mere hours after the interview concluded.

Musk has been vocal about his newfound disdain for Lemon since the interview was recorded, calling the journalist "a pompous fool who spouts nonsense."

"I welcome the opportunity to share #TheDonLemonShow on X and I challenge you @Elonmusk to actually watch it and then tell me it isn’t exactly what you said you want on your platform," Lemon posted in response.

  1. The interview was a non-event. Don insinuated that Elon had a drug problem for a while. They argued about lowered standards for DEI, and not much else. The finale was how Don has leveraged this for insane publicity. Bravo.

    10. this article simply rehashes the interview. If anything Lemons line of questioning is harmful for people treating depression. He's equating the use or prescriptions for depression with drug abuse. That's objectively harmful.

      Delete
    11. special K - we all know what he is using it for. He has said he does shrooms as well. His behavior is also indicative of a drug abuse problem

      Delete
    12. which behavior? Being a conservative billionaire? lol. I've used shrooms dozens of times. But I'm sober AF. My guess: you don't like him. And that's fair. Just admit you hate him. It's easier. No need for character assassination, because Ketamine and Shrooms are common treatments for depression, and people with depression shouldn't be stigmatized. They should be treated.

    4. if you're willing to be open and honest about what you've done to get to a better place and you're totally okay with me insinuating that means you're weak I doubt we're going to have a productive conversation after that. I'm not a massive fan of musk but I'm less of a fan of shitting on someone for not wanting to hurt themselves. Not getting treatment for mental health problems is significantly worse than stigmatizing the treatment. Elite level journalism, like how could you have an open dialogue after that?

    5. You read WAY into what I wrote. That's not my intent at all. I was only a few minutes in - and I'm clear on that in my post. So I don't even really know what you're talking about regarding the topic. By getting PR coaching it would be coaching in public speaking and fluidity/eloquence. You can say whatever you want and share the stories needed. That's not my point. There's a lack of fluidity happening in the interview that can be coached for improvement. Many execs get training (actually, when you get promoted to those ranks, that is the very first thing they do - get you prepared to speak to the public) and it's ongoing.

I really want to stress I absolutely do not expect you to understand that context and I'm glad that you don't I really mean that. A quote unquote high level journalist should be. Elon is not the one that needs PR coaching bud. I also want to stress that I think the guy is a total monster. Absolutely not a fan but that doesn't make that first question right. I think I'm done talking now if you can't understand that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. there was no rapid fire questioning. He allowed Musk to answer the questions at his own pace. Musk is not ready for prime time. Really not polished or informed.

      Delete
    3. yet. Musk couldn't provide a cogent response to easy questions. His ignorant stances are true because he said them. No facts. He actually gave him the ability to answer and if he wanted to continue a thought he had ever opportunity to do so. Musk puts his foot in his mouth because he is oblivious to how he appears. No one questions him.

    4. you know elon has asbergers right? The dudes socially awkward and weird as hell. Doesn't change the fact that if Don lemon was a good interviewer/host he would be able to accommodate his guests and question in a way that can be productive. Don lemons style is combative to generate entertainment. Look at any of elons interviews with Alex Friedman, Joe Rogan, and many others. They can ask difficult questions in a non aggresive way. The setting and structure of questioning is important.

      Delete
    5. Lemon is the ultimate narcissist. He’s only at the interview for himself. He don’t give sh*t about who he’s interviewing. Glad he was fired. Don’t need that bs negative energy.

      Delete
    6. agreed. The type of questioning felt like trying to get a "gotcha!" Moment.

      Delete
    7. Asbergers doesn't limit his ability to answer questions. I guess we watched the wrong broadcast and for Musk to not to know that it wouldn't be a softball interview is telling that he surrounds himself with sycophants.

    8. Lemon is a hack. He embarrasses himself every time he opens his mouth.
I think it’s great that Musk is autistic & has achieved so much with his life. That’s what people should know about. Not if he’s being prescribed medication for therapy & have lemon spin it like Musk is a drug addict. Thats hack stuff.

      Delete
    9. well then one could argue we have one narcissist interviewing another.

      Delete
    10. I see no reason to insult Lemon to uplift Musk or vice versa. I am willing to admit that Musk has made some good investments and am glad about Tesla's contribution to EVs. However he really should stop trying to do interviews or make comments that hurt his company's bottom line. No one is perfect which definitely includes Musk and Lemon. Musketeers should get off the everyone hates Elon wagon and realize not everyone is against him. He is the one that puts himself in the line of fire then runs away when he doesn't get the praise and accolades he thinks he deserves.

      Delete
    11. Saw an earlier comment that was complaining Musk had zero social IQ. Crazy how the left punishes the people they claim to advocate for. You have high-functioning Autism, they'll say you have no social IQ. You are a successful immigrant, they'll bash you for being rich. You have a stutter in your speech, they'll call you stupid. You have manic depression, they'll call you out for using ketamine as treatment. You speak with complete honesty, and no political correctness, you are an a-hole. Insane!!! I'm not pro left (obviously) or pro right. It's just crazy to watch one side be so against an individual who stands for so many things that are obviously good for the world, and yet the narrative says he's evil, so that's how he is treated.

      Delete
    12. idk elon lives pretty humbly while working 16 hour days... narcissists wouldn't sacrifice themselves like that. Narcissists would do whatever gave them the most enjoyment without care.

      Delete
    13. This is a very rational response. As a "Musketeer" I am trying to reflect on what you said. I don't think everyone is against Elon, but I do think that many are against him for the wrong reasons. As someone who follows him and his businesses closely, it's easy to spot when media purposefully misconstrues what he says on purpose, thus, adding to a false narrative about him. That's what I intend to battle.

As for him running away when he disagrees with what others think, I'm mixed on that. If you were vegan, and you had learned all you could about how chickens are cramped together under disgusting conditions, and cows were given steroids to create the biggest steaks possible, etc. and then you faced an interview with someone in the chicken/meat industry, would you be surprised if the vegan wasn't supportive, and furthermore didn't get respect for being pro-vegan?

      Delete
    14. Yeh, ones a billionaire & ones a fired talking head. An entertainer 😆 I’m not a musketeer, but I do think Elon’s an interesting person, knowing he’s on the spectrum (I know a few people that are) & has achieved a lot in a short time. He is terribly awkward.

According to research experts interviewed by Business Insider in April 2023, Fridman "lacks the publications, citations and conference appearances required to be taken seriously in the hypercompetitive world of academia".[4]

Computational biologist Lior Pachter said "some scientists and academics fear Fridman is contributing to the 'cacophony of misinformation'", while another AI researcher thought that Fridman may have "abandoned academic rigor in pursuit of fame".[4] In contrast, his former colleague Sertac Karaman, LIDS's director, stated: "Dr. Fridman has been a research scientist at MIT LIDS and in our research group. I have known him for many years, and been very impressed by his ideas and his research accomplishments."[4]
Nathan J. Robinson of Current Affairs wrote, "Fridman is not an idealogue and seems genuine in his desire to empathetically understand leftists (he has also interviewed Richard Wolff, Steve Keen, and Noam Chomsky) and to be fair to all sides, he has hosted a debate between 'skeptical environmentalist' Bjorn Lomborg and climate journalist Andrew Revkin. But as with Rogan, it is hard to avoid noticing a certain lack of balance. There are far more right-leaning 'intellectual dark web' types than leftists [...]." Robinson added that "the Fridman podcast is an excellent way to see how the posture of neutrality actually fails to adequately challenge falsehoods and toxic beliefs."

      Delete
    30. A 2023 article by Elizabeth Lopatto in The Verge stated that Fridman's podcast "has a following among the tech elite" and said that Fridman "is a softball interviewer" (someone who does not ask confrontational or probing questions of interviewees).[5] Ben Samuel argued in another 2023 article in Haaretz that Fridman failed to challenge claims made on his podcast by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

People say he stutters and stammers and seems almost distracted at times.....however i think its exactly these behaviours which show he is still a normal guy who refuses to conform to the slick hollywood style presentation bandwagon that all the others have jumped on. Sure the money he has allows him to speak his mind and stick to his own morals...some may say thats not thay bold, but again id just point them at any of his high level competitors and say that they dont publicly stick to their morals to the same extent as elon. He genuinely appears to be out to do a great amount of good in the world and leave a legacy of betterment of mankind rather than purely acquisition of wealth.

The funny part to me is the fact that only after the release of the interview, did Twitter decide to release specific details of the contract they had. And someone would try and insinuate that those contract details were the real reason, they let him go. No, if they did not agree to his contract specifics, regardless of how ridiculous some of us think they are, then

Anyone can post on X, even host a show. Don Lemon and X explored a deal where X would create a partnership with Lemon as a featured show. Don then interviewed Elon and in the process exposed he does not agree with Elon or X policies. So X rescinded the agreement.

Don still has the right to say whatever he wants on X. He just doesn't get paid by X for it.

Imagine you interviewed at Burger King, and in the process, exposed you are vegan. Is Burger King required to hire you? Should they be shamed for not hiring you? What's more interesting, is that Burger King despite being a meat company will not discourage or ban you from promoting veganism.

The thing is he can't even shut up for 5 minutes so that his businesses can recover from the last dumb shit he said or did. So, yeah, it's sad that even a moron like me is smarter than him... and you apparently.

      Delete
    5. Of COURSE he hires smart people to do the work. 99% of CEO's don't do the actual work of engineering or software development. They create a company with a vision and hire the right people to fulfill that vision. Do you think Steve Jobs invented the iPhone? Or did he lead his team to do it? His businesses attract the brightest minds in the fields of AI, robotics, engineering, and neurosciences. He has created the mission, vision, and business strategies for each of his companies. He saw an opportunity where others thought it was impossible.
Nobody thought he could start a rocket company having never worked in that field. They thought he was insane. But guess what, he found the engineers, drew up designs, put his money into the business, and created a business model where he can launch satellites into space at 1/10th the cost of a NASA rocket, and fund the further development of Spacex through the StarLink internet service. SpaceX is now valued at 180 billion dollars.

At the same time, he funded Tesla, joined in as a founder, and ultimately became CEO of the EV startup. At that time, Tesla was using a Lotus chassis and had no vision for success. In fact, no plans to be a mass-produced car. He created a business model whereby he would sell expensive EVs that would then fund less expensive EVs that would then fund the model 3, a car you can now get for less than 30k with federal rebates. Elon went through hell to pull off this feat. Worked insane hours, slept on the factory floor, and created a mentality that "the best part is no part" so he could reduce manufacturing costs and eliminate unnecessary processes. The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in the world in 2023. Not just of EVs, but of all cars. The moots that Elon has created around manufacturing, verticalization, lithium contracts, full self-driving, car software, insurance, neural networks, data capture, and so on are so strong that it's hard to see how any other car company will ever catch up. They are the only company producing EVs that make a profit. You say Elon is hurting his business by speaking honestly about his opinions, but Tesla is on pace to have another record-breaking year, despite macroeconomics and every other car manufacturer's sales in decline.

Tesla unveiled a robot design 2 years ago that was laughed at, and now the industry is watching in amazement at what it can do and how far they have come in such an incredibly short period. The pace of innovation is astounding.

Neurolink implanted its first chip in a human trial and is showing signs of success.

Elon drives the innovation, the mission, the work ethic, and creates highly successful business strategies that are now taught in business schools as an example of how to be successful.

So I guess you and I have different opinions on what it means to be smart.

    3. of course you would shoot straight to a divided mentality of “conservative vs liberal” (which I don’t reduce my values and beliefs to such a narrow mind set…also it’s incorrect in a description of me smart guy).
As a fellow programmer, there’s a reason you’re a CTO and no longer a practicing scientist…because you don’t know how to use the scientific method…go do less intellectual shit Mr CTO and I’ll go back to my data science and gathering my intelligence while you consume someone else’s agenda

    4. So you can make a generalization about Eileen, but don't like it when others do that to you. Then you went for a personal attack making stuff up about me. Interesting.

If you’d like to compare my fact based generalizations compared to your ignorantly assumed generalizations I’d be happy to prove how evident his psychology is symptomatic of psychosis. The opportunity to smash brains against a CTO will be fun🤘😁

      Delete
    6. You're kinda all over the place, so it's hard to "smash brains" with someone who doesn't have coherent thoughts and makes personal attacks. You also seem to have an irrational focus on my job title.

You stated "It's always the fake accounts agreeing with the crazy." I guess I'll go ahead and fact-check that for ya. I agree with Elon, and I'm not a fake account. Many in this thread agree with Elon, and clearly they aren't fake accounts. In fact, I've looked at every profile in this thread of those who seem to agree with Elon, and the only one that seemed fake was the one you highlighted. So, "fact-based generalization" busted.

I stated "It's always the libs who hate on someone for disagreeing with their narrative." You have to pay attention to my words here, because they are important. Look at the people HATING on Elon, calling him names, saying he's racist, a white nationalist supremacist, a drug addict, a baby, a homophobe, "jaundiced head". The only way you'll know their political views with certainty is to ask them. So I'll wait for you to ask everyone and then report back your results.

    1. that's an awfully simple-minded take on what actually happened.

Don Lemon was fired from CNN. X offered him a chance at a partnership deal, above and beyond what normal interviewers get. He agreed and asked to interview Elon. Don revealed he disagrees with Elon and everything X stands for. Elon and X decide to rescind his offer and allowed him to be a normal contributor to X, like Tucker, like PBD. So, how did Elon take his platform away from Don??
