Microsoft hangs up on Skype, killing the iconic video calling app.

RIP: Microsoft is officially killing Skype

  6. Yeah, no surprise here but sad still the same.

Skype could have been the friendlier consumer version of Teams and could have been an alternative to FaceTime and whatever Google is offering today.

I just don't care for Teams and it's clunky UI. Actually, I'm not a fan of video calls in general so I guess I really don't care either way...

  7. Skype has been my favourite. I don't like Teams. Skype feels professional when you are giving your address to directors. Teams seems to be casual.

    1. Skype never has ever been "professional". My friend and I finally stopped using the mobile app because it simply refused to push notifications properly on a consistent basis. We ended up going to Snapchat.

    2. Loli It seems it's possible for Teams to make phone calls, but it isn't clear how from the "free" version, or if you can have a pay-as-you-go balance, like in Skype.

      Delete
    3. Seriously?? Skype feels professional? To me it feels like a relic from 2000. Sadly it was useful for actual phone calls, that saved me a few times abroad. I wonder if team also supports that.

      Delete
  8. Oh noo :(.. I loved Skype, apart from its bugginess and VERY slow UI on both desktop and Android phone. It was one of the best one and almost only one that only required a username/email and NO phone number to use it! I hate all the others that are based on phone numbers. They're so strange. Well, at least Google Chat doesn't require a phone number but it's not like Skype and it lacks features.

I also made use of its included 60 minute free calling when I was abroad thanks to the MS 365 plan.

I wonder if they have a replacement. I don't use Teams. Last time I tried it, it wanted me to enter a phone number to use it, no thanks.

Edit: Ahh.. a few hours later and I got the email from Microsoft about Skype. Read through the links and I am on Teams now and most things were seamless. It just connected me, no need to enter any phone number like in the past. But, it lacks some features like permanently removing link preview thumbnails, editing messages, sending voice clips, and more. And it's not a very good UI. You click on someone's name and it automatically creates a draft. Everything is too spaced out, needs a compact view.

I don't think I'll be using this. I'll stick with Telegram for now until Teams becomes a more serious contender. Needs ALL Skype features imported.

My guess is that Skype's code was just too old and instead of them revamping it, they decided to rebrand, and launch a faster app, etc.

  10. Sad, I wonder what will happen to users who purchased the phone line option. Skype was good to those who used it as a "land line" with its own phone number etc

  11. Oh no. Joel will not be happy about this.

  12. Ok. That being said, in the teams android app. In teams chat, there's a tiny microphone button that you have to awkwardly *hold down* to record. Can they please fix this and just make it *tap and let go* to record a voice message? The current UI button does not stay held down, making exchanging voice messages in teams chat impossible on certain devices. Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  13. Microsoft is more than pushing teams hard, even when you send an invite to someone to use a rival collaboration software, the message includes a teams link more prominently, unless you work out how to disable it This has caught out colleagues on more than one occasion with everyone except one participant waiting for that one who used the link and ended up in teams instead.

  14. I didn't use Skype so much but it always worked perfectly when needed. Also, I have a Skype phone number that will disappear, I'll have to look for an alternative - is there one?

    1. Thanks. I'd really rather not have anything M$ at all, if that's possible. I've had Skype since way before M$ took over and I just kept it for convenience as it worked on my MacBook and Android phone and was very reliable. I don't have a camera on my Linux desktop but I used Skype for voice calls rather than video calls anyway.

  16. I have used Skype since before microsoft bought it. Then, I was happily paying $6.99 a month in orde to not only use it for chat and video, but to make calls to landline phones in the us, canada and mexico. Then, microsoft bought it and within a year or 2, doubled the price to about $14. I cancelled my paid subscription then. I wrote support several times that a 50% price raise was waay too but I would happily pay a reasonable price. Just got random we appreciate your comments letters. I use it for soo much still. I play an online game sort of like metaverse and make a skype room for every event I have (I have virtual night clubs) and it is convenient to paste the wix bulletin and text advertising for people I hire abd the description and any special instrustions. I have a room for about 10 different clubs. and talk one on one with people in game or out. Mainly in text, but some in voice or video. I had read the FREE version would shut sometime in 2025. This is just a HUGE blow with not enough warning. I will have to copy a lot of chats, some arw with people who have passed away. :(

    1. Good luck finding the equivalent of "skype to phone", or the ability to call freephone numbers (0800 in the UK) from other countries...

It seems like Teams has an equivalent to "skype to phone", but it doesn't seem to be available in the free version, and seems to need a subscription, rather than simply pay-as-you-go in Skype.

I read that there is no equivalent of the feature allowing you to call a freephone from another country, which is (soon to be 'was') a very handy ability that's saved me arse several times (mainly because of the excessively long 'hold times' you experience when calling any customer support line these days).

This is going to be a nightmare :(

Skype was nice, but it doesnt follow the trends, and recently like almost 3 years back the desktop is oftenly broken, it cant deliver the messages to 1 or 2 contacts, sometimes can only receive, sometimes I had to create a group with 1 person I'm going to chat with.

And for the mobile version, to the one who build the uiux, "People making love"-you! I'm still following the community guidelines right? Shame on you, and I hope you get the karma for embarassing people who mis-sent anything to the wrong person or wrong group.

  25. The comments on this post are amazing. Clearly, none of them have used Teams.

I've been using both Skype and Teams for a long time, and obviously, there is no reason to ask why they're (finally) making that decision. Teams is so much better.

    1. Well, this is a shock to many, including me.

I had a quick hunt around for information on the features I use Skype for, and had a play with the app.

Perhaps you can help, since you seem to think the features should be there (unless I'm in the 0.01%).

Skype-to-phone (ability to call a regular phone) from Teams (free) using PAYG. There's no 'call' button and my research suggests I need to subscribe rather than just pay and use money from a 'balance', and the instructions seem to suggest this feature is only for businesses...and those instructions seem pretty confusing.Call freephones in another country. I read that this it outright not supported...you have to be in the same country as the freephone number you're calling. This feature can be a "god send", since it is often necessary to call customer support numbers from abroad and the hold times can be a very long time...the non-freephone numbers could end up costing a huge amount of money.
Can you help us see that Teams can work for us? Am I in the 0.01% you mention?
