Samuel L. Jackson narrates Kendrick Lamar's halftime show as 'Uncle Sam'
Kendrick Lamar teased a big surprise for his Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and that included the show being introduced and narrated in parts by Samuel L. Jackson.
Jackson appeared in character as 'Uncle Sam.' He sported a blue coat and patriotic tophat, donning a red, white, and blue ensemble similar to the historic U.S. Army recruiting ads.
Kendrick's dancers were also donning monochromatic looks in either red, white or blue. At another point, the formed the American flag on stage.

Social media loved 'Uncle Sam' and the rest of the imagery, and voiced those opinions on X/Twitter.
Others made sure to point out the political commentary and imagery, including the performance taking place in front of President Donald Trump, who is attendance.
Still, others pointed out that this sort of creativity is just what you should expect from a rapper like Kendrick Lamar.
He was the best part of that debacle
ReplyDeletejust shows you missed the whole point
DeleteWhy was he there anyway ????🤔
ReplyDeleteSymbolism.
DeleteWORST HALFTIME SHOW EVER 💩
ReplyDeletejust say it went over your head and ask questions….
Deleteagreed
DeleteI bet you voted for that worst president ever.
Deleteyou missed literary devices in HS English and it shows
Delete💯
DeleteThe racist white people didn’t like the show.

ReplyDeleteCursed be Ape-like Negro Samuel L. Jackson !.
ReplyDeleteHe was the best part of halftime, in my opinion
ReplyDeleteby you saying that, it lets me know that this halftime show was not for you. No offense, but you’re just not part of hip-hop culture.
Deletedo you think the entire audience of Super Bowl is part of the hip hop culture?
DeleteHe wasn’t the best choice to entertain a halftime show. JMO.
I’m not part of the hip hop culture
Deletebut you got the message of the performance right?
DeleteI deliberately don’t follow a grievance between two rappers. I get that it was supposed to be more, as long as it could be deciphered.
Deleteit’s not rocket science .
DeleteYes. The rest was 💩.
Deletemeans, you liked his costume?
Deletehe was poking fun at Uncle Sam, or did you not get that?
Deleteoh, I got it ...

ReplyDeleteI love the goal keeper take 1 life away. What a message
ReplyDeleteOnly part you could understand what was being said.
ReplyDeleteI’m deaf and understood quite well. What’s the white peoples problem with tjis
Deleteplay the race card please! Give it up it’s pathetic. I give anyone a fair chance. I watched listened even tried to read lips. It was garbage.
DeleteI think to many it was the absolute opposite of “garbage”….and I think you are racist.
DeleteHad you understood the words, I still don’t think you would have liked it…because it’s 1. Not for you. 2. Not about “entertainment” for entertainment’s sake. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning poet. You are a white lady who needs hearing aids and some manners.
she not like us 😉
Deleteyou call her racist and that she needs hearing aids. Yet you say she needs manners. Ok 👍 lol
Deletethose are not insults. They are observations.
DeleteShe said she could not hear.
Calling someone’s performance “garbage” is offensive. And judgmental.
Admitting that you don’t understand something…but are open to being educated…is respectful. Asking a question about the performance would be respectful.
In this climate and point in history- calling a black poets work “garbage” is what I call “soft racism” or “benevolent racism”.
The racism is implied but not overt. But we can read between the lines.
you call it what you want.🤡 I call it like I see it. No poetry if you can’t understand the person reading it. I’m not the only one who is saying this. Had he spoken clearly maybe more would understand this great message you all are speaking of. Or maybe he should brave the poetry to written form. Maybe that is a better outlet for him because speaking is clearly not his strong point.
DeleteI don’t care what color he is. That has zero to do with it so hop on another soap box. It has to do with talent and ability. He has neither in the vocal speaking department.
DeleteNoting your poor grammatical skills, I get the problem.
Deletei recommend you learn English
DeleteWhat was the "Message' that Kendrick was conveying ... I guess it got lost in translation 🤬
ReplyDeletesome people will always be illiterate
Delete... or his performance was very SUCKY and didn't deliver the message
DeleteWhen Colin Kaepernick took a knee ... EVERYONE understood why
buddy, people are STILL interpreting Kaep's message wrong, let's not
Delete... I'm an activist and sure was confused by Kendrick performance. Something was lost there. He could've made a major impact instead of cryptic messages ... just my 2 cents
Deletesometimes people are given a meal and sometimes they have to read the recipe.
Deletewhat are you advocating for that the imagery and symbolism was completely lost on you?
DeleteYep no Dei in that show!
ReplyDeleteNo, just talented people. Your whiteness is showing.
Deletebest post of the day, sir. 👍🏾
Deletestop using the acronym 🙂 if you don’t support equality say it proudly hun
DeleteUsing it in this context shows you clearly have no idea what it actually means, you just know better than to say what you actually mean.
Deletehow racist are you dude?
DeleteHe was the only exciting part about the Super Bowl. Why couldn’t they have brought back Beyoncé? At least it would’ve made things exciting.
ReplyDeletethe nfl doesn’t do country music acts!!
Deleteyou are as if Beyoncé was the only person of color to do country music. How about you go clean your khakis and face mask and go back to drinking from your juice box.
DeleteBecause people that watch football don’t listen to country. Right. You’re a moron.
Deleteyour opinion does not matter
DeleteI am so sick of y’all
DeleteYou don't get it Primo.
Deletewhat’s this Primo bull crap.
DeleteProves my point
Deleteproves the point that you’re a bigot. That you are a racist. Usually people that do that are the ones that lump every person with a Spanish last name as one nationality, and you are nothing more than a khaki wearing domestic terrorist.
Deletebro, khaki is NOT my color scheme, but keep trying.
Deleteis your mother’s name when she’s getting railed by the NFL

ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
ReplyDeletewas it? 👀seemed to be hyper political
DeleteThe WORST SHOW EVER
ReplyDeletehttps://media1.tenor.co/m/S8Lh1WcKmHAAAAAd/malta-maltagifs.gif
DeleteThey take who's popular amongst the young crowd. They do this every year, yet boomers forget, claim they won't watch it next year and then forget that and fall for it again. Rinse and repeat.
ReplyDeleteSorry they couldn't get the Statler Brothers this year....maybe next year? Lol,lmao

ReplyDeleteUncle TOM OPPS UNCLE SAM LMFAO
ReplyDeleteMESSAGE!! (DAVE CHAPPELLE VOICE)
ReplyDeleteThe search for 40 acres and mule exploded 😂
ReplyDeleteSamuel L. Jackson is a national treasure
ReplyDeleteBeautiful half time show! I'll be humming those memorable tunes well in to my 80's.............WAIT!..... I AM in my eighties! I wished I could have understood the (any) lyrics so I could be offended! But sadly no!
ReplyDeleteNow that the NFL partners with Jay z's record company and he has the final say on who performs, it's looking like we'll have to watch rappers every year 🙄 A couple years ago, it was a lineup of all rappers & Rihanna one year now Kendrick. I guess we can forget about country or pop or classic rockers in the superbowl again 😔
ReplyDeleteGood
DeleteTerrible performance, dull and off key. Glad mute buttons are still available.
ReplyDeleteThat’s bc you didn’t understand the bigger message
DeleteNoooo he understood the message , he didn't like the message big difference😉
DeleteSpectacular performance, because at the end of the day, it goes beyond '40 acres and a mule.' Thank you, Compton, California native, Kendrick Lamar for representing America's red, white, and blue.
ReplyDeleteWhat terrible show. Quality died...officially.
DeleteThe absolute worst halftime show EVER and I’ve seen some really bad ones. At least it gave me time to restock the snacks and the bar since I didn’t want to do it during the game or the commercials!
DeleteNot watching allowed you to miss the overall message of the music. Also, I thought the choreography was pretty amazing as well.
DeleteMusic?
DeleteI love the symbolism in Kendricks art and performances
ReplyDeleteI mean…he was standing in the middle of an American flag made on the backs of black people, and then he performed Humble while splitting that flag in two. It’s not exactly subtle.
DeleteAlso the flag took a step down every time he said be humble
DeleteI wasn't asking to piss anyone off. I was literally asking if the op would share how it made them feel. What they took from it. Everyone noticed something new every time they watched it. I guess people do mind sharing. To claim how symbolic it was to you, then get mad when someone asks what you took from it. It's weird to get upset over it.
Deletealso not all of us are americans so a bit of explanation for specific things is not that serious
DeletePeople are oddly confrontational and snarky on reddit. I've had similar interactions as yours where I ask something just for conversation and its immediately taken as if I'm trying to for a gotcha moment or talk to me like I'm dumb.
DeleteNot upset, just misinterpreted your comment. Sometimes people come into conversations like these just to ask for a sparknotes summary of what’s going on, and I thought that’s what was happening. Sorry about that.
DeleteI appreciate your response. You did give insight into what you took. When I think about it, it's like going to an art gallery and asking what the paintings mean to people. Obviously, not everyone wants to share their perspective with a stranger. Especially a rando. I get that now. Im not entitled to their time. Didn't mean to come off as annoying.
DeleteSwear to god this is why Kamala lost, liberals constantly belittling others and trying to bully into supporting them. It doesn't work
DeleteNot to many of the weird Kendrick bots will answer this
DeleteThe “too ghetto” , “that’s what America wants! Nice and CALM!” , and “Scorekeeper, deduct one life”
ReplyDeleteAmong tons of other symbolism
I’m well aware most of this will fly above a majority of SB watchers heads but it made me cry — Kdot is a genius and this performance was SO needed
I’ve already seen complaints on insta that the halftime show was too boring.
DeleteBecause you weren’t actually watching.
I feel like for a majority of the NFL fanbase it's just not for them, most of NFL hated Colin Kaepernick. They won't understand Kendricks art or messaging
DeleteIt’s almost like….they not like us

DeleteWowwwwww nail it
DeleteYup, all of this.
DeleteI saw something about how apparently a Twitter or someone is mad that there were no honkies at all in the show?
DeleteI mean, I kinda get it. I enjoyed it but this felt more like an art show than entertainment which is probably what most people were hoping to see at a superbowl.
DeleteI appreciated that it was a stripped down version that focused on the artist and their music. I thought it was refreshing compared to some of the spectacles that have been the last several.
DeleteI was also expecting more spectacle, but later thought it would have come off sort of inappropriate to have an overly expensive show so soon after the LA fires. I enjoyed it!
DeleteSome children were left behind I fear
DeleteIf it had been an upbeat party vibe, that would have been the wrong message for the times.
DeleteVery true.
DeleteIt’s weird to say expect that everyone viewing a musical performance is going to love it.
DeleteIt was well put together and I understand and agreed with the symbolism...but I was bored.
Deletewe couldnt friggen hear it.
DeleteSounded like he was singing into a wet washcloth.
Samuel L. Jackson cosplaying as a complicit Uncle (Sam), America (personified by dancers) marching in lockstep, the coglike platform when the set switches to more easy-listening hits like “All the Stars” (sorry, SZA ♥️), the hoodies, the fourth-wall address to TV-watching viewers… Anyone focusing on the beef with Drake is missing the point.
DeleteAnd Kendrick has been saying it's all been about the bigger picture, not just Drake, so even some fans are missing the point. The symbolism embedded in this was incredibly moving. I'm a Brit and I still got all the references. I feel this was such an intelligent political statement and was much-needed during these turbulent times.
DeleteAlso, not enough people talking about Kendrick's lines, "The revolution about to be televised. You picked the right time but the wrong guy."
DeleteAgreed. The parts of the performance that were truly meaningful got overshadowed a bit. Some of the main talking points about it are the references to drake and their beef.
DeleteSamuel had been very critical of trump He was on this stage for a reason 👏 Loved it
ReplyDeleteHe was a black panther too.
DeleteHe was also one of the ushers at MLK Jrs funeral.
DeleteHoly shit! I just googled it 🤯 Thank you for this awesome but of trivia .
Deletehttps://c.tenor.com/_UumMLIjJhYAAAAM/samuel-jackson-angry.gif
DeleteHe also cleaned Elijah Muhammad‘s bedpan while at the hospital
DeleteCool I'll have to read about that ! He's awesome
Deleteiirc never a formal member but ran in those circles and participated in various ways.

He's more America's Uncle than Snoop Dogg will ever be.
ReplyDeleteSomeone on tw said he can double as uncle tom, especially during that seacond bit, i loved this addition.
DeleteAlso, most of the clips of this specific part on tw are muted, even after you download it, it took me forever to find one that wasnt.
My first thought.

There was a very intentional pause between “Uncle” and “Sam”

DeleteSurprised trump didn’t have a heart attack … can’t wait for someone, somewhere to yell “DEI” like it’s a curse word.
ReplyDeleteIt’s halftimes like this where I wish Fox Nation did a live Trump cam for the game. I would’ve hopped on their 99¢ offer for that. But even thats too much to pay.
DeleteIt’s almost like DEI goes both ways. I heard people bitching that there were no white people there. He didn’t have to include them or have a diverse group. Can’t see why anyone who is anti DEI would have an issue with him practicing what they preach 🤔
DeleteHow much longer will Jay-Z have creative control of the halftime show - if Trump does have the internal fit you just know he is having and the likes of Fox news also melting down.
ReplyDeleteThe last 5 shows have been (and deservingly so) very black artist focused.
Bet we end up with a dull white male with a guitar vibe next year.
Kid rock and Jason aldean are just waiting for Cheeto to tap them in for a half time show
Deletenot after what happened to bitch ass kid rock last night...
DeleteWhat happened? Someone knock his dentures out?
DeleteHe was trying to get a crowd to clap at some bar in Nashville and they just laughed at him. Ended up walking off the stage while they booed and laughed.
DeleteOh that’s funny. I think I’ll sleep well tonight knowing that, thank you 🙏
DeleteI'm sure it will be all over the socials tomorrow
DeleteThis made my day
DeleteI had the exact same thought. This might be the last Black artist we’ll see for a while.
DeleteWas wondering that too. Next year we gonna get Swift, Billy Cyrus or Carrie Underwood lol
DeleteIs the NFL's fanbase predominantly black?
DeleteYou usually book shows that cater to your audience.
The perfect person. Can't imagine anyone else for the job
ReplyDeleteFelt very Jordan peele
ReplyDeleteMAGA peeps self-combust
ReplyDeleteLike most of dot’s work, this one’s gonna age well
ReplyDeleteIncredible
ReplyDeletesuch a fucking incredible show, and jackson really tied it together perfectly
ReplyDeleteI must be crazy but seeing as he is Nick Fury I thought he was promoting the new Captain America movie or something. 🤷♀️
ReplyDeleteThat’s honestly a really funny interpretation 😭but the entire show was full of non-Marvel political messaging
DeleteIt was super pro-military, very Marvel-ish.
DeleteLoved the performance and he was the star of the show for me
ReplyDeleteThis was wonderful.
