Kendrick Lamar teased a big surprise for his Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and that included the show being introduced and narrated in parts by Samuel L. Jackson.

Jackson appeared in character as 'Uncle Sam.' He sported a blue coat and patriotic tophat, donning a red, white, and blue ensemble similar to the historic U.S. Army recruiting ads.

Kendrick's dancers were also donning monochromatic looks in either red, white or blue. At another point, the formed the American flag on stage.

Social media loved 'Uncle Sam' and the rest of the imagery, and voiced those opinions on X/Twitter.

Others made sure to point out the political commentary and imagery, including the performance taking place in front of President Donald Trump, who is attendance.

Still, others pointed out that this sort of creativity is just what you should expect from a rapper like Kendrick Lamar.

Calling someone’s performance “garbage” is offensive. And judgmental.

Admitting that you don’t understand something…but are open to being educated…is respectful. Asking a question about the performance would be respectful.

In this climate and point in history- calling a black poets work “garbage” is what I call “soft racism” or “benevolent racism”.

The racism is implied but not overt. But we can read between the lines.

Jackson cosplaying as a complicit Uncle (Sam), America (personified by dancers) marching in lockstep, the coglike platform when the set switches to more easy-listening hits like “All the Stars” (sorry, SZA ♥️), the hoodies, the fourth-wall address to TV-watching viewers… Anyone focusing on the beef with Drake is missing the point.

      Delete
    18. And Kendrick has been saying it's all been about the bigger picture, not just Drake, so even some fans are missing the point. The symbolism embedded in this was incredibly moving. I'm a Brit and I still got all the references. I feel this was such an intelligent political statement and was much-needed during these turbulent times.

    19. Also, not enough people talking about Kendrick's lines, "The revolution about to be televised. You picked the right time but the wrong guy."
