The DOJ seized $15 billion in Bitcoin from pig butchering scam ring, officials sa.

The DOJ details a $15 billion pig butchering scam ring bust: Phone farms, forced labor camps, and an ill-gotten Picasso

The ring allegedly had operations in Brooklyn and Cambodia and operated a phone farm with 76,000 social media accounts.

Perhaps facing reality head on is the most honest way to try to escape it.

  33. Chen Zhi is not a Cambodian name at all. Likely has fake documents or a fake passport from Cambodia or something. Maybe his real passport is flagged with a criminal history.

    1. In the first paragraph: "Chen Zhi, is accused of hoarding $15 billion in Bitcoin, raked in from a sophisticated ‘pig butchering’ operation run out of Cambodia."

It's about the origin of the scam, not his origin.

      Delete
    2. But the title of the article as well as a few paragraphs down it says "Chen Zhi, a UK and Cambodian national."

    3. Being a citizen does not require you to have a region-specific name. It's not a common UK name either, I'd wager.

EDIT: He was a Chinese national granted Cambodian citizenship: https://apnews.com/article/cambodia-us-uk-online-scam-prince-chen-zhi-bbc3fae393003a16cda22efd5a2ada22

    4. So I was right, he was a Chinese Native, that got permanent residency in Cambodia by investing in a business and ultimately that gets you expedited for citizenship. Similar process to the U.S. except our investment is $500k instead of about $100k in real estate in Cambodia. This dude left China for Cambodia, I wonder why?? They'll need to look into his past in China and I hope the Chinese government helps with investigating his history. This guy didn't make all this startup money from nowhere.

      Delete
    5. You were right about him being Chinese, which no one disputed, but you went off on a tangent about him having a false identity. He left China for Cambodia because he knew it was an easier place to launder money through. It's pretty cut and dry when you look at his ties to the Cambodian government and Cambodia's function in the region.

    4. Most likely ego ... after the first billion he probably felt untouchable.
Even if he had stopped at $2 billion there is no guarantee that his past wouldn't come back to haunt him.

In addition, anyone else involved in the scheme had a reason to be quiet as long as they kept getting paid.
As soon as the money stopped they might be more inclined to talk to authorities.

  36. The real question is... how they seized the bitcoin?

  37. Politically motivated by the Trump administration as Trump continues his economic war against anything Chinese! In his first administration, Trump tried to destroy China’s economy with tariffs. Only to have China respond by refusing to by our farmers soy beans. We all know how that worked out! Trump got his butt handed to him as he had to use $20+ billion dollars to bailout the farming industry! The one thing that he is good at, is spending our, the taxpayers, money.
