  7. The same thing that happened to Twitter will now happen to TikTok.

Right wing billionaires have captured the majority of our media landscape and we need to protest in person to combat the propaganda that's about to be pumped out before the midterms.

The only thing that has more influence than bots online is seeing your neighbors out on the streets.

  12. I am so glad I made the decision years ago to avoid any of the unregulated foreign-made successors to Vine. I rarely even use YouTube anymore. When Vine died, that was my last interaction with that short-form brainrot content format and it has only gotten worse. My 9 yr old niece is allowed to have a tiktok account that she posts herself dancing on and it scares the shit out of me because I’m not sure I trust her mom to properly police it and protect her. I wouldn’t give my 9yr old a phone with internet access anyways but I understand life is different now than when I was a kid/teen…

But yeah. Good luck, America. Most of your sources of entertainment and online socializing will be owned by right-wing billionaires and you’re going to love it.

    2. Lol, this is the thing. It's justifiable to point out how awful the current news is, but the nature of social media algorithms has always favored reactionary behavior built around tribalism. That isn't exclusively a conservative or a MAGA thing, but it's pretty important to how they operate.

  46. If the EU forced an American company to be sold to "ensure the content feed is free from outside manipulation" I don't think we'd ever hear the end of it in terms of the amount of complaint and moaning it would generate.

Yet it's clearly more of an obvious fact that people like Musk etc are manipulating things to suit their own individual agendas even if it sows discord over here.

  53. This deal could be one of the most significant tech policy developments of the decade — TikTok’s U.S. operations staying active under American investors not only avoids a ban, but also reshapes how data governance and algorithmic control are managed in a post-national security world.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The most ironic part of all the bots in this thread making comments about leaving the app because “American ownership” and “propaganda” is the literal existence of the great firewall.

You can’t even get on the real Chinese TikTok app because of how heavy handed the CCP monitors and regulates it. Can’t be having Joe from Michigan making post about Tiananmen square that makes it way to Chinese screens.

Literally the only content from China that I get on TikTok is state sponsored propaganda or international tourist.

  58. LOL at folks blaming this on MAGA and/or Trump like Kop-Mala would not have allowed the same thing. The powers-that-be in this country want to control the narrative, and whether the users stay on and get "regulated" to death or they hop off and the app dies the powers-that-be kinda get most of what they wanted: Control through silencing dissenting voices.

I started to use TikTok as a means to boycott most possible US services and goods after Trump took power, and TikTok is owned by ByteDance. I've investigated what would be acquired by US investors and Larry Ellison, and as far as I know, TikTok's operation in Europe is not part of the US operation, that way still in ByteDance's ownership.

Hillary Clinton and Obama’s speechwriter both came out at an event saying the problem with social media like tik tok was it was showing what Israel is doing to the people in Gaza so young people think Israel is bad. Larry Ellison is one of the biggest names in the tech world and now NVIDIA announced a 20+ acre facility in Israel. Israel has ready done a lot of work on nvidia chips so it makes sense
