'God of War: Laufey' announced, focusing on the story of Kratos' wife

Santa Monica Studio has unveiled God of War: Laufey, the next title in the popular God of War video game franchise. The upcoming action-adventure game shifts focus from god of war Kratos to his eponymous wife (voiced by Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll), who isn't having as peaceful an afterlife as her family likely hoped.

Announced during PlayStation's State of Play livestream on Tuesday, God of War: Laufey will follow the frost giant after her funeral in 2018's God of War. Having died and left behind her husband as well as their son Atreus, Laufey — also known as Faye — finds herself in the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods.
However, though she is technically dead, this appears to be a temporary setback for the Jötunn warrior. Encountering various gods from across mythology, including Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and Mongolian god Begtse, Faye will battle through the Everywhen to find her way home and protect her family.
She'll also apparently get her very own Companion Cube, allying with a talking cosmic cube named Phranque (voiced by The Boys' Jack Quaid) and a Kiwi-accented ribbon named Rue (voiced by Perlina Lau).
PlayStation showed off around 20 minutes of gameplay during the State of Play livestream, displaying more of the fluid action and arresting graphics we've come to expect from the franchise's current Norse era.
While no release date for God of War: Laufey has been announced, the wait may not be too long. Veteran video game reporter Jason Schreier has stated that the game isn't years away and won't be arriving in 2028, leading to speculation that we could be fighting dead gods as soon as next year.
God of War: Laufey isn't the only game in the franchise that Santa Monica Studio is working on. The developer previously announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy in February, though very few details about this project have been released.

ReplyDeleteGod of War used to be blood.... brutality and the Rage of Sparta. It had weight anger and consequence. Now its bright neon magic.... glitter effects, soft dialogue and quirky soft talking companions. It feels less like God of War and more like a bad Disney spin-off...

ReplyDeleteThe fact she can jump makes her leagues better in my book than Kratos. Nothing took me out of God of War more than doing the super hero quick time events to walk a few steps on the map and see a treasure just barely out of my reach above my head knowing I couldn't jump. So weird.

ReplyDeleteIt is really sad that Sony decided to stop putting their games on PC. I absolutely loved the previous two games with Kratos, and would probably have purchased this one on day one. But alas I have no PS5 and it is too expensive for me to do so (especially for just one game). Hopefully Sony changes this decision sooner rather than later.

She looks like a 50 year old who's aged gracefully. That isn't going to bring me into the series. I took the time to watch the entire video to give it a fair take, and maybe the game is fun... however, it looks like it'll tell you its story rather than letting you peice it together yourself. Sorry, but, Stellar Blade Blood Rain wins.

ReplyDeleteI think the premise is excellent. What a good idea: play as her, and the way they tied it into the previous games was ... chef's kiss.
ReplyDeletebut... the graphics don't look ANY better than god of war from 2018. That's 8 years ago. And sure, this is the third in a trilogy, perhaps they've been working on it for a while.
but Super Mario 3 looked better than Super Mario 1. and this is on a new console this should be lookin GOOD. and it doesn't look BAD, but it just looks the exact same graphically.
the exact same with maybe a little bit of ray tracing. it should be lookin' amazing. i'm just sayin'.
also, like, the combat looked absolutely amazing. the world was stunnining, i loved the enemies the pharoah-looking evil dead woman, but a cube? really?

For those wondering, Faye was fighting Begtse, the God of War in both Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhism (technically, Vajrayana Buddhism), and his partner was Sekhmet, who rides the giant Sphinx, is the Egyptian Goddess of War.
