The Tim Cook era of Apple has come to an end.

Today, August 31, 2026, is Tim Cook's final day as CEO of Apple, and the outgoing Apple chief had some emotional parting words to share on social media.

"Sending lots of love to the Apple community on my last day as CEO," Cook posted on the social media platform X. "My title changes tomorrow, but the love I have for the Apple community never will. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration. My gratitude is endless, and I’m excited for the next chapter!"

Tim Cook held the position at Apple for 15 years, taking over as CEO after Steve Jobs departed in August 2011, shortly before his passing the following October. Starting Sept. 1, Cook's new position within the company will be as executive chairman of Apple's board of directors.

Cook will be succeeded by incoming Apple CEO John Ternus, the company's current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. At 50 years old, Ternus is the same age Cook was when he took over as Apple CEO.

Under Cook, Apple saw the launch of some of its most popular product categories, such as AirPods and the Apple Watch. Cook also led the company as it completely relaunched its computer product lines, ranging from MacBooks to desktop Macs, with Apple's own Silicon chipset.

Apple became a trillion-dollar company under Tim Cook's leadership as well.

Cook also had to navigate the company through difficult global geopolitical issues, which led to some interesting moments, such as when President Donald Trump referred to the Apple CEO as "Tim Apple." Cook responded at the time by changing his profile name on then-Twitter to "Tim ."

Ternus's first big Apple event at the helm will take place on Sept. 9, when the company is expected to launch its new line of iPhones, including its first-ever foldable device.

  16. I know it’s not surprising that he’ll have the role of executive director, but I’m wondering how much money he’ll make and why? Doesnt he have enough money? And isn’t the point of retiring to let someone else execute their vision for the company? I can understand that maybe having cook around for a year or two would be helpful for a successor. Maybe that’s all this is? I guess it just seems like these people make tons of money and their reward is a ceremonial position where they continue making a ton of meeting while at the same time the company is probably trying to reduce its labor costs. When is enough enough for these people?

  18. RIP Tim, Steve Jobs would have genuinely hated what you turned Apple into. You inherited one of the most focused, product-driven companies on Earth and spent 15 years sanding away everything that made it special until it became a trillion-dollar slop factory built around incremental refreshes, endless segmentation, subscriptions, accessories, and extracting another dollar from an installed base.

You were phenomenal at monetizing Steve Jobs' Apple. You were considerably worse at preserving it. Jobs wouldn't even waste the energy spitting at you.

  21. Meh. First two thirds of his tenure was BRILLIANT. Yet he leaves on a sound bite that while I’m sure is “authentically” written, still sounds as about as AI is it comes in terms of where he left his legacy…uninspiring, not accessible to the lay person, and about as far from what the “think different” and 1984 stood for.

Tim Cook started as an inspiration in the most impossible of shoes to fill, and yet he did it!! All to throw it away as a sell out in the most inaccessible era of apple tech ever.

Executive Chairman is a special case even which gives him defacto veto power over whatever Ternus decides, he can even overrule him if he wants to.

Could be a point of Conflict even depending on their relationship. The same stuff happened under Bob Iger and Bob Chapek when one became CEO and the other switched from CEO to Executive Chairman.

But we also gotta remember, whatever his plans/desires are for the lineup, it will take several years for us to even see them in leaks. Apple starting to experiment under him means we likely won’t see anything meaningful until at least the early 2030s

    2. Uh idk what you’re smoking but the Apple Watch and AirPods have been one of the top selling devices in their respective fields of tech, even if they aren’t massively game changing or innovative

      Delete
    3. It doesn’t matter about past success. In business it’s about what you are doing next. Why buy a new watch or AirPods? The technology is near perfected.

      Delete
    4. You literally just said a watch that wasn’t ground breaking and headphones that don’t exactly light up the world, both statements being objectively wrong if you spent 5 minutes looking up the yearly sales numbers year by year since their release, Apple has been very successful waiting for the right time to introduce its tech version of existing products rather than trying to invent new things that haven’t been made already, don’t just move the goalpost now

      Delete
    5. What are you going to buy from Apple next year? That’s Apples problem going forward. iPhone 20 is not going to be much better than the current iPhone. Or the next watch or AirPods .

      Delete
    6. It's funny until you realise that people like you have been saying this since iPhone 7. We're at iPhone 17 now, and the sales are still getting stronger year after year. So "How is Apple going to make people buy iPhone 18?"

The same way they've been doing in for the past decade.

      Delete
    7. But the day is inevitable, maybe not today or tomorrow but soon. If batteries were easily replaceable (as they used to be) most people wouldn’t upgrade . How much better can the phone, AirPods or the watch get. To grow a company this size you need to be convincing people to buy new things all the time (Cook was good at that) but you run out of road eventually. I foresee a struggle ahead and a downsizing, maybe even selling off parts of the business.

      Delete
    8. That's fine. It's a reasonable view, but you can apply that same perspective to nearly every consumer tech product company out there. You should start shorting Apple stock in this case.

      Delete
    9. A watch which is the best selling smart watch on the planet. Headphones which if they were split into it's own company, would still be a fortune 500 company because they are just that popular. And if you think apple silicone was an incremental update, I don't know what to tell you.

      Delete
    10. What new device did he bring to the market that didn’t already exist. He was a great manager but not an innovator. He’s left his successor with a problem. Why upgrade your phone or headphones?

      Delete
    11. Mobile phones and portable music players, tablets, laptops and personal computers all existed before Apple launched their version. Apple has never been about bringing new products to market.

      Delete
    12. What problem exactly? He left his successor in a fantastic position.

      Delete
    13. It’s hard to grow it from this point. What new compelling device are they going to sell that you already don’t own.

      Delete
    14. I believe he did his part. I think this is part of a larger over arching strategy that Steve couldn’t see through.

      - revive company
      - overhaul the product line.
      - light a fire / inspire / buzz about product
      — product(s) are hi quality feeding back into the buzz.
      - new products creating new market segments.

      - transition to a CEO that can expand operations and do things at high volume.
      - removing existing talent is questionable but may hinder expansion
      - marginal improvements to continue to draw new customers and support existing.
      - once large infrastructure is in place transition…

      - next ceo to rinse and repeat the first block now with better footing and backing.
      - established products that have matured may transition
      — see reports of businesses wanting to buy into the the bargain mac of 2004 for AI initiatives and physical change of the iphone plus software with the new AI. Its been useful for me as it was able to piece together an answer from data that spanned 10 years in my phone that helped me find the reason a generic file existed to begin with.
      - new products to introduce and strategies to take advantage of them. See macbook neo.

Theres more that could be added. I think the this larger over arching strategy explains things better. And the by product of stagnation is catching the competition or would be competition off guard. See iPhone and Apple silicon. Not excusing Tim but he did his part. If it wasn’t the exponential potential of AI speeding up timelines Tim would be right on time more or less.
