$300 for a smart speaker only makes sense if it ships with a genuinely agentic OS. Otherwise it's another HomePod chasing a market Apple already gave up on.
How fast Pinocchio has to run these days. They're up to two stupid "disruptive" ideas a week to ensure that the stock market keeps their P/E in the "growth" category, so they can continue to leverage their overvalued stock against real money.
The generative AI company has “discussed” charging up to $400, Bloomberg, which has been reporting on the yet-to-be-announced smart speaker since July, said today. The publication said that OpenAI is viewing the smart speaker as a smartphone replacement.
The fact that Altman has manipulated his people into buying the idea that this will be a viable "smartphone replacement" shows a level of "collective delulu" (as the youts would say) that even I did not believe was possible. It's a god-damned smart speaker FFS.
Even if ChatGPT was a reliable and safe product (it isn't) and the speaker design something less idiotic than a donut... all speakers are by definition something that remain in a more or less static location in your home. How does that in any way, shape, or form "replace" a smart-phone? At best, were this product not as idiotic as is being described, one could I guess bluetooth or wifi connect to your phone to the donut and have it answer incoming or make outgoing calls (as in, a speaker phone). But every core other function on your phone that is not GPT is not replicated (to be clear you couldn't pay me $100/month to put GPT on my phone, but certainly some people do).
The level of disingenuous bullshit these companies shovel at us from month to month is staggering. I guess when IPOs are looming, honesty is 100% optional.
Can you buy a person for $400 to keep in your house 24/7 to interface with your smart home devices and do all of ChatGPT's functions?
The people actually interested in a product like this are the kind of people who are incapable of actually conversing with humans because they've been brainrotted and entirely cognitively surrendered.
Bloomberg pointed to “high-quality metal” and other premium materials for the speaker, which OpenAI reportedly designed with LoveFrom (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/05/apple-legend-jony-ive-takes-control-of-openais-design-future/) a studio owned by famous former Apple designer Jony Ive.
So their revolutionary new device is - a smart speaker? So surely not the iPod of the decade. And the size of it will make it sound shit for music anyways, so it will be a for voice-tuned device.
Smart speaker? Sure, seems like a great fit for OpenAI's core competency.
Donut-shaped? Fun, why not!
Phone...replacement? So, like, they think people will put the donut in their pocket or purse, and pull it out in public to ask it questions, to which it will respond, out loud, in public?
Why donut shaped? There a reason it's called a donut, cos they're the only things that are that shape. It's not a shape that humans find comfortable or convenient to hold.
Sam: jony don't get me wrong, I like how it has led lights and a speaker but why does it wriggle? Also is there supposed to be a hole in the middle of it i
Ive: Sam, do you not see? The entire point of the donut is the hole. No one wants a donut if it's got no hole.
Sam: this looks and feels a lot like a talking vibrating sex toy connected to chatgpt
Ive: It's a stress ring. Like the rings people use for finger strength training. The DonutGPT, I squeeze it when I want to talk to the ai, I squeeze it when I need something. Need help? Just squeeze. You asked me to design something I would use, you don't like it? Touch it, it's soft and I added the light brown silicone finish so it looks and feels like skin. Best honest Sam do you like it
Sam: very interesting use case. i absolutely love it
Anyone who follows OpenAI knows they've been working on "a device" for a long time now. When asked if it was smart glasses, Sama replied something like "no, I'm not a fan of smart glasses."
On the one hand I want to withold judgement and let them do their thing. On the other hand I don't want them to fuck up and it is 50/50 with their track record. Sometimes they absolutely knock it out of the park and other times they whiff it so hard you gotta blush on their behalf. Don't fuck it up guys.
This device will almost definitely flop. People don't need an exclusive device to access chatgpt lol. We already have laptops, cell phones, tablets, smart tvs, and so on.
Unless this device provides additional value or capabilities not found in existing ways of accessing chatgpt, it is a waste of money
I swear corporations lose all creativity the moment they expand that big and put the big wig managers at the top to make decisions. These fuckers don't actually know anything about real market sentiment and feasibility and only climbed to the top executive positions by being confident loudmouths with empty talk. The real creativity died from the entrepreneurs who founded the companies. The ones who take over never have the same creativity in them that entrepreneurs who started from nothing, had.
Now we see it happening in real time. Vision Pro? Flop. Metaverse? Flop.
Anyone with a sense of the actual market sentiment would know what a stupid idea this is. Who'd want to walk around now holding a phone AND a stupid additional speaker device? And when you can already access ChatGPT on your phone? This makes zero sense
Also speakers at home are extremely inconducive outside of western nations. Asians tend to be more introverted and live with parents so they can't just loudmouth talk at home all the time.
I don't know what world you're living in, but 35% of US households have smart speakers in them. Amazon alone has sold 600 million Echo devices globally.
Amazon gets far more info about households from Amazon purchases, viewing habits, and the app people install on their phones. The most widely deployed Echo devices use hardware that is not capable of natural language parsing. That's why the devices were $50 and not $300. They need them to be cheap if they expect people to put them all over their house. This means that the only way to use them to spy on people 24/7 would be to constantly stream to the cloud. Something that security professionals all over the world can disprove with network inspection tools.
And no, I'm not interested in the ragebait covering frivolous lawsuits about them like "Alexa is spying on your kids!" In the case that resulted in those headlines, a parent purchased an Echo device, put it in their kid's room, then sued Amazon because "the child did not consent to being recorded." Only the parent did when setting up the device. It was a bullshit lawsuit.
ER doctors getting ready to hear some crazy excuses on how men manage to get themselves stuck in this donut AI device with moving pieces and a personality.
It's shaped like a donut for hands-free use, so if anyone is going to the ER because of one they'll have the pleasure of eye contact when getting it removed.
Yep and now OpenAI expects you to carry both your phone AND this shit thing. I dont know what these braindead execs are even thinking when brainstorming ideas.
This is what happens when the people who rise to the top don't actually deserve to be at the top.
It says "you can hold it" like it's intended to be held, not just moved. Although, now that I think about it, I bet it's a single-wheel robot and rolls around the house like a pet. An outer rotating ring with an inner stator that stays upright to attach cameras/eyes to.
Hey I have an idea, let's make it small enough to fit in your pocket, add a display, maybe a cellular modem too so you can make calls on it. It will have ChatGPT built in as its default assistant. How cool would that be??
There'll never be another Steve Jobs from any big corporation. I can tell you that 100% for sure. Because the people running the big corpos have ZERO creativity and innovative spirit. The ones who have all the ideas are always the entrepreneurs starting from scratch from their mom's basement and got called autistic and bullied in school. Not the suit guys driving their lambo to work and surrounding themselves with yes-man and completely out of touch with ordinary folks.
That's what I think it could be. A single-wheeled robot with inner stator ring to attach cameras/eyes to.
Edit: Something like this except maybe the "eyes" are offset to the top, leaving the middle open. The camera module can pivot around a center axis for forward-looking navigation.
The big takeaway here is that it looks, feels and acts nothing like an Apple product or anything the company is currently planning. OpenAI hasn’t found any evidence they’re violating trade secrets with this device
$300 for a smart speaker only makes sense if it ships with a genuinely agentic OS. Otherwise it's another HomePod chasing a market Apple already gave up on.
ReplyDeleteBlack Mirror happening right in front of us
ReplyDeleteYes, we all know whats gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteI already hate it
ReplyDeletePer Bloomberg, the OpenAI speaker’s main appeal is ChatGPT capabilities.
ReplyDeleteAlso, by sheer coincidence, that is its main detraction. The stupid price is secondary.
DeleteMaking AI "seem alive" is behind half the damage it's doing, particularly to people in crisis (as mnetioned in an article shortly before this one).
ReplyDeleteTrying to make it seem more alive / human-like is literally the last thing they should be doing. It's not your fucking friend.
How fast Pinocchio has to run these days. They're up to two stupid "disruptive" ideas a week to ensure that the stock market keeps their P/E in the "growth" category, so they can continue to leverage their overvalued stock against real money.
ReplyDeleteOpenAI’s speaker will “be shaped like a doughnut that’s roughly the size of a hockey puck,” Bloomberg said today, citing its anonymous sources.
ReplyDeleteYou know what else is roughly the size of a hockey puck? A doughnut.
Delete"Large boulder the size of a small boulder" vibes, here.

ReplyDeleteStill, with OpenAI losing billions of dollars a year, it’s understandable that it’s seeking additional revenue sources and to drive engagement.
ReplyDeleteSo their solution is to find a way to lose billions even faster?
DeleteThe generative AI company has “discussed” charging up to $400, Bloomberg, which has been reporting on the yet-to-be-announced smart speaker since July, said today. The publication said that OpenAI is viewing the smart speaker as a smartphone replacement.

The device will be able to control smart home devices too, the publication previously reported.
ReplyDeleteLike a $50 Echo Dot?
DeletePaying $400 to OpenAI so that my voice doesn't reaches their training data sounds counterintuitive.
Wait, are they claiming to be using a local only model? Or that they are doing the translation from voice to tokens locally?
You know what else is roughly the size of a hockey puck? A doughnut.
ReplyDelete"Large boulder the size of a small boulder" vibes, here.
Depends on the donut shop.
Deletehttps://www.wannahurts.com/
Before reading your comment, I too, wondered what's the difference in size between a doughnut and a hockey puck, or "cookie" as they call it?
DeleteAt that price it should also make freshly squeezed juice!
ReplyDeleteThat was the main problem with Juicero - lack of AI. They were simply too far ahead of their time with that product.

How about talking to a person?
ReplyDeleteThey are definitely "more alive".
