  1. $300 for a smart speaker only makes sense if it ships with a genuinely agentic OS. Otherwise it's another HomePod chasing a market Apple already gave up on.

Trying to make it seem more alive / human-like is literally the last thing they should be doing. It's not your fucking friend.

    2. The fact that Altman has manipulated his people into buying the idea that this will be a viable "smartphone replacement" shows a level of "collective delulu" (as the youts would say) that even I did not believe was possible. It's a god-damned smart speaker FFS.

Even if ChatGPT was a reliable and safe product (it isn't) and the speaker design something less idiotic than a donut... all speakers are by definition something that remain in a more or less static location in your home. How does that in any way, shape, or form "replace" a smart-phone? At best, were this product not as idiotic as is being described, one could I guess bluetooth or wifi connect to your phone to the donut and have it answer incoming or make outgoing calls (as in, a speaker phone). But every core other function on your phone that is not GPT is not replicated (to be clear you couldn't pay me $100/month to put GPT on my phone, but certainly some people do).

The level of disingenuous bullshit these companies shovel at us from month to month is staggering. I guess when IPOs are looming, honesty is 100% optional.

    1. I swear corporations lose all creativity the moment they expand that big and put the big wig managers at the top to make decisions. These fuckers don't actually know anything about real market sentiment and feasibility and only climbed to the top executive positions by being confident loudmouths with empty talk. The real creativity died from the entrepreneurs who founded the companies. The ones who take over never have the same creativity in them that entrepreneurs who started from nothing, had.

Now we see it happening in real time. Vision Pro? Flop. Metaverse? Flop.

Anyone with a sense of the actual market sentiment would know what a stupid idea this is. Who'd want to walk around now holding a phone AND a stupid additional speaker device? And when you can already access ChatGPT on your phone? This makes zero sense

Also speakers at home are extremely inconducive outside of western nations. Asians tend to be more introverted and live with parents so they can't just loudmouth talk at home all the time.

    7. I don't know what world you're living in, but 35% of US households have smart speakers in them. Amazon alone has sold 600 million Echo devices globally.

      Delete
    8. Yeah because they were dirt cheap. Now Amazon has all their info.

      Delete
    9. Amazon gets far more info about households from Amazon purchases, viewing habits, and the app people install on their phones. The most widely deployed Echo devices use hardware that is not capable of natural language parsing. That's why the devices were $50 and not $300. They need them to be cheap if they expect people to put them all over their house. This means that the only way to use them to spy on people 24/7 would be to constantly stream to the cloud. Something that security professionals all over the world can disprove with network inspection tools.

And no, I'm not interested in the ragebait covering frivolous lawsuits about them like "Alexa is spying on your kids!" In the case that resulted in those headlines, a parent purchased an Echo device, put it in their kid's room, then sued Amazon because "the child did not consent to being recorded." Only the parent did when setting up the device. It was a bullshit lawsuit.
