Apple jumps into original content with a show about apps
Apple’s first series is about apps — because, of course.
The Cupertino, California-based company's original content slate will kick off with a show about the Apple app economy and culture, Mashable has confirmed.
The tech giant is teaming up with executive producer Ben Silverman (known for The Office), musician Will.i.am and Howard Owens’ Propagate for the show.
The news comes after much speculation that Apple is delving deeper into creating its own content.
Already, Apple has been behind releases such as Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour, a docu-series with Vice and exclusive video interviews with big time artists such as Adele.
The company is also reportedly producing a new scripted television series with Dr. Dre.
Apple, for the most part, has been quiet about original content efforts. But it has been promoting its new "living room"-focused Apple TV set-top box. Details for distribution of the new show were not disclosed.
Still, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, told The New York Times that the new series about apps "doesn't mean that we are going into a huge amount of movie production or TV production or anything like that."
Apple declined to comment further to Mashable.
Silverman — who is also an EP on Jane the Virgin, Marco Polo and Flaked — reportedly took the idea to Apple.
Cue worked with Silverman when the EP served as co-chairman of NBC Entertainment. Cue helped assist in bringing The Office to iTunes.
The Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am is also no stranger to tech. In 2014, he unveiled a voice-controlled wearable called Puls.
