Joaquin Phoenix pays tribute to Heath Ledger during acceptance speech

Joaquin Phoenix continued his strong award season run on Sunday, taking home another trophy at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards for his acting in Joker.

During his acceptance speech for winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the SAGs, he spent the majority of his time talking about the other actors nominated — praising Leonardo DiCaprio ("you've been an inspiration for over 25 years") and Adam Driver ("I'm so moved by you, and you were just devastating in this film") — before finishing with a moving, memorable tribute.

"Really I'm standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor, Heath Ledger," he said.

Ledger played the Joker in Christopher Nolan's movie The Dark Knight, a performance for which he won a posthumous Academy Award for following his death in 2008.

  1. I’m surprised his brother isn’t his favorite actor. River Phoenix was amazing.

  3. @VeronnicaSophi this is why I say it's unfair to compare the two joker acts.
Joaquim Phoenix could not have achieved his role without reviewing Heath Ledger's act.
Joachuim's joker was of the hook for me

    1. Actually, Joaquim steered clear of any other Joker acting references. He wanted to bring his own take on the clown.

  5. His speech was perfect and heartfelt. He kept politics out, and it turned out beautifully. I wish DeNiro would had done the same, I am such a fan his body of work, but his politics are not something I cared much for
