On a more serious note, how secure is gmail webmail? You connect the email up to your computer's email program, but you can also get it online? I know it's convenient to get it in multiple virtual places, but that convenience alone seems insecure.

    1. Security in this context has nothing to do with your computer connecting to Gmail without interference. It has everything to do with the fact that anyone can have a Gmail account, Gmail's servers are inherently blended environments, and that as an outside entity there are an unknowable number of people with access to Gmail's customer data, how it's used, where it's transferred for backups, etc.

  35. From the article:

NSC spokesman Brian Hughes said he has seen no evidence of Waltz using his personal email as described and said on occasions when ā€œlegacy contactsā€ have emailed him work-related materials, he makes sure to ā€œccā€ his government email to ensure compliance with federal records laws that require officials to archive official correspondence.

ā€œWaltz didnā€™t and wouldnā€™t send classified information on an open account,ā€ said Hughes.

Or a fuller quote via Axios:
    https://www.axios.com/2025/04/01/mike-waltz-signal-gmail-security

"Let me reiterate, NSA Waltz received emails and calendar invites from legacy contacts on his personal email and cc'd government accounts for anything since January 20th to ensure compliance with records retention, and he has never sent classified material over his personal email account or any unsecured platform."

  40. Members of President Donald Trumpā€™s National Security Council, including White House national security adviser Michael Waltz, have conducted government business over personal Gmail accounts, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post and interviews with three U.S. officials.

The use of Gmail, a far less secure method of communication than the encrypted messaging app Signal, is the latest example of questionable data security practices by top national security officials already under fire for the mistaken inclusion of a journalist in a group chat about high-level planning for military operations in Yemen.

A senior Waltz aide used the commercial email service for highly technical conversations with colleagues at other government agencies involving sensitive military positions and powerful weapons systems relating to an ongoing conflict, according to emails reviewed by The Post. While the NSC official used his Gmail account, his interagency colleagues used government-issued accounts, headers from the email correspondence show.

Waltz has had less sensitive, but potentially exploitable information sent to his Gmail, such as his schedule and other work documents, said officials, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe what they viewed as problematic handling of information. The officials said Waltz would sometimes copy and paste from his schedule into Signal to coordinate meetings and discussions.

  99. this is moving the goalpost of the fiasco, saying that waltz using gmail is worse than the encrypted signal app ignoring the fact that gmail retains records and doesn't let you set them to automatically get nuked, forever, within 4 weeks - like the trump officials did in signal.

In fact I'm pretty sure even if you deleted your emails google could recover them to an extent, unlike an app that let's you automagically delete them to hide them even if you for whatever reason have uninstalled the app from your phone so people don't know you're trying to hide shit or something

Again, the real problem with signal was that trump and co was using it's encryption and automagic deletion features to hide records from FIOA requests, records and communications that are required to be preserved so the people have a clear fucking clue as to what their administration is doing
