John Oliver tears down every move Trump's made in his coronavirus response

John Oliver has been covering the new coronavirus for almost a month now, tracking its spread across three detailed videos.

And while he touched on Trump's response to the pandemic last time around, he really lets the president have it in his latest video — breaking down everything from Trump's rapidly changing position on the virus to his dismissive response to a request for ventilators.

"Yeah, that's the problem," says Oliver, responding directly to Trump's comments. "Hospitals don't have that many ventilators and now there's a pandemic. Trump must be so confused by fire departments: 'You walk into most houses, they've got some sinks, maybe a few cups — now all of a sudden they're on fire and they say they need hundreds of gallons of water sprayed with hoses. I just don't buy it.'"

Later, Oliver plays a clip of Trump telling a reporter that he suspects the media want to keep the country closed so he can be defeated in the polls.

"Oh for fuck's sake!" yells Oliver. "No-one is thinking about you! These guidelines did not revolve around you. For once, something has come along that is more toxic and more threatening than this president and somehow, he's got fucking stage envy.

"And look, I know that this isn't exactly the first time that I've criticised Donald Trump — but I can't tell you how much I was rooting for him to do this better."

    2. Good point. Actually this is a very serious matter. His actions or more accurately inaction has unnecessarily killed a lot of good Americans. If he'd listened to the experts many people would still be alive and many people who are going to die wouldn't.

    4. Well said. The thing that's really weird with Trump - is that given how little he clearly knows about a lot of things one wonders how on earth he got this far. I mean ignorance can be cured but not stupid.

Each Corona virus carrier infects roughly two persons, so place I bean on the first square of a chess board and on the next two, then four, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 then 1024 and keep going. That is what happens every two days.
Currently there are no vaccines so the only answer is social distancing so hospitals do not get overwhelmed.

Those negative opposition-clowns got used to see a problem in each of his solutions. Used to eloquent Corrupted Politicians only miss their share of the loot. Is the response of his UK Prime Minister better? Did anybody in Europe followed Oliver scientific instructions? Clowning is not a Science regardless of the bought awards.

    7. Yes, the British response has been slow but at least the government got it - and the population generally.

There is no political infighting here on the level that there is in the US - with what amounts to an effective political consensus. The media is not being undermined by the government and the normal relationship with the press has been largely restored. The public have been informed of the gravity of the situation and medical professionals have been allowed to lead and advise without being publicly contradicted by their political masters. The health service is gearing up to tackle a national crisis and has received enormous support from the population. The country feels like it is on a war footing - more together and focused than it has been in decades.

That is where YOUR country should be right now. Instead it’s a confused mess with a leader who has moved his position on the critical nature of this outbreak over and over again. He’s attacked reporters, medical advisers and political opponents and has not led from the front as a true statesman - attempting to bring the country together and put the nation before himself. This kind of situation demands a leader of political seriousness - a grown up who’s willing to put away the toys of daily politics and take on the great burden of leading a country through a national crisis. To do that you need to be willing to take the lead, be honest and tell people how bad things are going to be and to encourage unity and solidarity. Those are not things Donald Trump was elected for - he is not a unity politician - he feeds off creating tribalism, distrust of institutions and by acting apolitically. Well, Trump has to be consummate statesman now but he’s unprepared for that - he was elected precisely because he wasn’t going to be like that.

So in short, yes the UK is in a better position as a nation for the crisis that is unfolding. There is a population here that is hunkered down ready to brace the storm - where as America is still arguing amongst itself whether it’ll be a storm or a shower and whether it’s worth building a shelter to weather it.

    8. "Great leaders communicate and great communicators lead" with due respect to you ma'am, the way he speaks to every media personnel shows what kind of leader he is. Every country is trying to fight this pandemic and every country has different kinds of leaders but none of them speak in such an ill manner to the media. The media is followed by the entire population...in these times a great leader needs to make sure everyone is calm and show that everything is being done to stop this pandemic. Italy took it lightly, they were so overconfident and look where it they ended up. The UK is no different but atleast the people and the NHS are uniting and working together. Attitude affect leadership...just voicing my honest opinion...stay safe

    16. "Yet the same day as the WHO warning, the Trump administration announced that it was transporting to China nearly 17.8 tons (more than 35,000 pounds) of "masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials." As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted in the press release announcing this shipment, "These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.""

"Americans indeed are a generous people. We want to help those in need. And at the time these medical supplies were shipped, more than 28,000 people in China were infected with nearly 600 deaths attributed to the virus. But how could Trump allow tons of vital medical equipment Americans to be transported to another country in February if, as he has claimed since January, he fully understood the risk the United States was facing from the virus."

    21. Irma Churgin first let me address you Comme ts about a slick talking corrupt politicians. Yes there are many many of those types in our government for sure. McConnell being the biggest of them. But people don't throw them to the curb, they just keep voting them in. So they have no incentive to care about people who don't even care about themselves. But if our choices in this country are only corrupt politicians or corrupt business men who lie, cheat, don't pay their workers, are afraid to show their taxes and has spent a lifetime doing business with corrupt politicians then baby, we are done. So spare me your high and mighty bull about politicians when you opt for business corruption which is exactly what is bring us down befire trump. There are many politicans who care about people and many wealthy businessmen also. Trump is not one of them. Which brings me to virus. We blame him because he is the person to blame. If his concern was for the American people there are literally a 100 things he could have done better. But his concern is for the economy as it effects his reflection and his pocketbook.
Yes there are several countries that did so so much better than trump did. South Korea, France, Germany, Ireland, Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong for example. I blame trump not only for his poor and slow response to this virus but also so for being a person we cannot trust in any circumstance. And when you are touting how wonderful he is, look up anything he has said which says how sorry he is for those who have died or how proud and thankful he is for the minumun wage works risking their lives and health to man grocery sores and deliver packages and has stations and airline flights and cleaning nursing homes and government buildings. You won't find many or any because because this scum of a man does not care.

    22. Irma Churgin I’d say that here in New Zealand our prime minister Jacinda Ardern has done a fantastic job with not only the covid-19 response, but with everything that’s been thrown at her. All world leaders should take note. Using the excuse that nobody else has done better is BS for someone who claims to be making “the greatest country in the world great again”.
