Watch Italians send messages to themselves from 10 days ago, stressing threat of coronavirus

In these trying times, 10 days can make a big difference. That's what Italians in a new video from Milan-based film collective "A THING BY" want viewers to understand about the coronavirus pandemic.

Within a short period of time, Italy has become the second-most-affected country.

The video, which features testimonials from Italians, is meant to serve as a cautionary tale for those in other countries that could soon see a similar fate as Italy, should preventative measures go un-followed.

Once cavalier about the severity of COVID-19, the official term for the disease caused by the virus, Italians in the video encourage their past selves to stop underestimating the threat it poses.

"The worst case scenario? That's exactly what will happen," one woman said.

Knowing what they know now, those in the video want to make clear to their past selves that they should heed the warnings of public health officials.

"I know China is far away but this virus is faster than you think so maybe re-think your Saturday night plans," one man said to his past self. "And who knows? Maybe had you stayed at home then I wouldn't have to be home now."

After those in the video explain to their past selves what it feels like to now be quarantined,  the video ends with a simple message for other countries: "We underestimated this. You don't have to do the same. Stay at home."

  1. Its not a joke, a week ago we had 200 cases here in Spain, last friday I never thought the whole country could close down, now we cant leave our home.
Its not exageratin its a last effort when everything else failed.
Workers are afraid for their jobs, companies are afraid for their future but people's health is the priority now.

    1. Barcelona residents still went to work today under threat from their bosses if they did not. Responsibility is severally lacking here. Either you brutally shut everything down for a month or two like the Chinese, or try to linger it out for 6 months and might still be in a whole. The sanest idea is to down tools and take stock, regain forces and prepare for the post-apocalyptic scenario

  7. Just in case there is still someone who hasn't got the call yet. Stay home, avoid close contact as much as you possibly can! The elderly and weak will thank you. May it not become as worse as in Italy. They will most likely hit the 2000 dead mark by tomorrow.

  10. I’m in Canada the outbreak hasn’t hit fully yet. We’ve shut down public school universities all sports national sports and any giant public gatherings. Our government is closing the borders to all foreigners and is asking all Canadians to stay in Canada and to get home soon as further precautions will be taken.

Your warning has been heard Italy we are doing our part.

    2. We have to shut down the malls. Just leave the grocery stores, pharmacies, and all the essential stores open.

  12. USA is blindfolded, barely anyone has been tested because we dont have enough so we dont know if we are already at the rates of Italy. I only see a small percentage of Americans taking this seriously, most even getting mad or making fun of people taking the necessary steps to stay safe, including our own president. I cant even try and educate people I know because they dont believe it, which its that exact attitude that continues to prolong this pandemic. Wake up people

    1. Indeed people dont seem to be taking this as seriously as they need to be. I'm sure we're at Italy's numbers and if not we will be soon. It is entirely likely that soon we will surpass thos numbers.

    2. Thats because people in the USA have been lied to by so many people in the media, drug companies, doctors, etc that it is hard to tell what is factual and what is not....like the fabel of the boy who cried wolf.

    3. Thank you for posting this. Some in our group of friends are continuing to go dancing in crowded bars while the rest of us are stuck inside. They then get angry when we tell them they're being irresponsible. And they're not the 'young people' as reported on the news, they're in their 50's and 60's! As you said, it's that attitude that continues to prolong this. Stay healthy!

    5. Plus people price gouging necessities making it harder for people who need them including the immune-compromised and healthcare professionals. Before someone swoops in and says “It’s just good business,” it’s not. It’s illegal in 35 states.

    6. I'm worried for the Americans, and the effect it will have on it's spread to Canada. It's everyone's social responsibility to take this seriously.

    7. I’m a little bit sick right now and I’m pretty young, low risk. I got tested on Friday. Testing is become available rapidly. My university shut down and I just moved out, most universities in the nation have done the same. Staying home only going outside to visit close relatives without symptoms. While I don’t think we’re doing the greatest job at curbing the spread of it, I think we’ve progressed a lot and even my doctor says that we’re doing a pretty good job at the moment. Hope that makes you feel a little more at ease friend :)

  18. Thank you people of Italy. If it weren’t for you sharing your experiences, the US may not have wakened up. Because of you, some of our neighborhood have not waited for the officials to tell us to quarantine. We hope that this passes for all of us soon
