'Lord of the Rings' star Sir Ian Holm dies at 88
Sir Ian Holm, best known for his role as Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died at the age of 88.
The British actor's agent confirmed the news to the Guardian in a statement, saying that his illness was related to Parkinson's.
“He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer,” the statement read. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”
Although Holm was probably best known for his role in LOTR, he had a long and wide-ranging career, including key roles in Alien, The Fifth Element, and Ratatouille.
He also picked up a 1967 Tony Award for his part in Lenny, a 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in King Lear, and a 1981 BAFTA for a supporting part in Chariots of Fire.
Holm is survived by his wife Sophie de Stempel, who has been sharing sketches and photographs of her late husband on Instagram.

ReplyDeleteThe road goes ever and on
ReplyDeleteOut from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet
One by one everyone is leaving. World is becoming dreadful
ReplyDeletewe all do eventually
DeleteMay he sail into the West!

ReplyDeleteRest in Peace, Bilbo Baggins..
ReplyDeleteGo to Haven!
He will always be Bilbo to me :{
ReplyDeleteOnwards to the grey havens then, master Baggins ❤
ReplyDeleteEnd? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
ReplyDeleteWhite shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
This hurts. This year man. I swear...
ReplyDeleteWith everything else now Bilbo Baggins is gone too? RIP
ReplyDelete2020 is apparently the kind of year that likes to kick 'em while they're down.
Delete...a much more sympathetic character in "Rings" than he was in the original "Alien".
ReplyDeleteThe road goes ever on and on....
ReplyDeleteRIP
