Audi has a new electric car coming up.
The Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron concept is, technically, an identical twin to Audi's Q4 e-tron concept, which was launched in 2019 — the two cars share the same Volkswagen MEB platform, 225 kW powertrain, and 82k Wh battery. Even the dimensions are roughly the same.
In actual performance numbers, this means 0-100 km/h (0-62.1 mph) acceleration in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 180 km/h (111.8 mph), and 450 km (279.6 miles) of range.
The new car, however, has a far sportier exterior, with inclined D-pillars and a spoiler that runs under the rear window. Audi says the new car has a "sexy back," and the design makes the Audi Q4 Sportback appear much longer than its sister model.
Inside, you'll find a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a virtual cockpit with info such as speed, charge level, and navigation, located behind the steering wheel.
An interesting new feature is a "large-format" head-up display which has an augmented reality feature, with the ability to display graphical information (such as turning arrows) "directly on the course of the road." Unfortunately, Audi didn't share any images of videos showing this particular feature, so we can only imagine what it looks like.
There's no word on pricing or availability, though the Q4 Sportback e-tron and its Q4 e-tron sister model are expected to start under $45,000, which is a significant price decrease from Audi's first electric SUV, the Audi E-Tron, which starts at about $75,000.
Generally, Audi plans to offer more than 20 all-electric cars by 2025, ranging from compact to luxury class.
Why do concepts always look better than the finished product? Is it a result of the accountants putting their stamp on it?
ReplyDeleteUsually manufacturing (stampings, mouldings etc) and legislation constraints... obviously money comes into it - needs to be a market acceptable price/margin - but no OEM deliberately makes a worse looking car than they can...
DeleteIt’s like Jaguar I-pace
ReplyDeleteSexy back if you consider hunchbacks sexy.
ReplyDeleteRear and interior look congenial ... front side? It’s OK
ReplyDeleteTrop gros, trop « plump »
ReplyDeleteNice! Very nice.
ReplyDeleteLooks aweful
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though they took a hatchback, put it on stilts and gave it the A7's rear. Why people want cartoon styled cars like this is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteSo they announce the SUV at last years Geneva Show and now the coupe. And turns out they're both only concepts and the production versions aren't even available till 2021.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't news worth reporting on.
And I agree with above about the looks - oversculpted, overstyled, dodgy proportions and stance. The quest to 'move the game on' has resulted in even traditional marques like BMW and Mercedes copying the heavy-handed excess styling tendencies of the Far East so that formerly classic models like the 3 series and C class look ever more and like Lexus's and Kia's with each generation progressively losing the understated elegance for which they became so well-respected.

Is this really an Audi, the same carmaker who gave us the stylistic purity of the TT and other models in the 80s and the 90s?
ReplyDeleteFrom Bauhaus to Baroque in a little over a decade is quite a negative achievement. (Ditto BMW and Mercedes)
Making so many electric cars is a brave move by VW group. Especially when it's not proven that the market is big enough to sustain it.
ReplyDeleteHot damn!
ReplyDeleteInterior doesn't look that bad to me. Needs some work with the flow of the infotainment screen though IMO.
ReplyDeleteI actually like this. Well done Audi!
ReplyDeleteOne of these days i would like to see someone make an electric CAR. Im soooo done with the crossover/SUV thing. The teslas are nice, but I dont like the interior. The best thing out there at the moment IMO is the polestar 2. but even that is barely a car... almost crossover dimensions and shape.
ReplyDeleteBoring
ReplyDeleteCorolla more your cup of tea hsv?
DeleteOverstyled clunker; what happened to the elegant Audi look of old?
ReplyDeleteOverstyled? Nah, that's lexus department.
Deleteis this a Tesla fighter?
ReplyDeleteshouldn't Tesla be worried?
what about Tesla ???
Ohhhhhh I thought they were releasing the production model today .
ReplyDeletegood looking car
ReplyDeleteIt’ll probably come out with around 250 miles
