Ennio Morricone, legendary film composer for 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', dies at 91

Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer best known for scoring the likes of Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and John Carpenter's The Thing, has died at the age of 91.

Morricone passed away in a clinic in Rome several days after breaking his femur, according to the Guardian, who confirmed the death via his lawyer.

It's difficult to overstate just how massive Morricone's contribution was to film and television. His IMDb page has 520 credits, running right the way through from the early 1960s to the present day.

Morricone scored some of the most famous movies of all time, including Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Western trilogy, Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven, and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Since the news of his death broke, filmmakers, creatives, and celebrities have already taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the legend.

Morricone's music extended beyond his prolific film and TV work. He also composed the 1978 FIFA World Cup theme, and has conducted live orchestras at a number of large venues across the globe.

  29. went to see Once Upon a Time in the West as a 12 year old. I nearly walked out after 20 minutes or so because it was sooo sloooow. Then Claudia Cardinale showed up and the accompanying Jill's Theme was just about the most beautiful piece of music I'd ever heard. I resolved to sit through that piece of crap just in the hope of hearing it again. Of course by the end of the film I knew I'd seen a masterpiece I'd remember for the rest of my life.... Wonderful film. Wonderful score.

  37. He also wrote the music and soundtracks for so many other films....I began scrutinizing the credits for his name because his work was like another character in the film story. He had a certain "style" in his compositions. I feel we have lost a treasure.

  45. Morricone might not have wanted to rehash what he did with Leone for the 'Hateful Eight' but ironically for that film he did rehash the unused parts of the score he wrote for 'the Thing' (1982). Which is just fine because it's fantastic.
