Elon Musk explains his Twitter bid in TED interview

"Algorithm should be open-source."

Just a day after offering to buy Twitter for $41 billion, Tesla CEO and richest guy in the world Elon Musk took the TED stage, together with TED head Chris Anderson, and used some of his time there to explain why, exactly, he wants to own Twitter.

"I think it's very important that there will be an inclusive arena for free speech," Musk said. "Twitter has become kind of the de facto town square. It's really important that people have the reality and the perception that they're able to speak freely, within the bounds of the law."

He then outlined a few of the practical moves he thinks Twitter should make for that to happen. These include open-sourcing its algorithm, and make apparent any actions that emphasize or de-emphasize people's tweets, "so there's no behind the scenes manipulation either algorithmically or manually."

On the topic of actually owning Twitter, Musk said it would be "miserable," with everyone "blaming him for everything."

"But it's important to the function of democracy (...) to help freedom in the world. I think civilizational risk is decreased the more we can increase the trust of Twitter as a public platform."

Musk also said the move is not about making money or maximizing his ownership of Twitter.

When asked about the problem of policing problematic content such as hate speech on the platform, Musk skipped the specifics, and again re-iterated the importance of opening up Twitter's algorithms to the public. He did say that Twitter should err on the site of caution when it comes to banning content.

"If in doubt, let the speech exist," he said. "I don't have all the answers here," he added.

As for other changes that may be coming to Twitter, should Musk succeed to take the company over, Musk said he'd try to get rid of cryptocurrency-related scams, and the long-awaited edit button would also be a priority.

  15. I only watched because Bloomberg TV decided to broadcast. It’s on in the background.
Be under no illusion this is one of the biggest brain farts ever, even for Musk. Having him at the helm of a social media platform is dangerous. He has attacked the management and like all despotic fools he never uses any fact to discredit those he wants to stamp on and eliminate.
I live in Austin, TX. Ground zero for Tesla. The euphoria is off the charts since he moved himself, his auto HQ and built a massive factory. We need to consider where he sits not on the Asperger spectrum but on the most dangerous to society spectrum.
We need to stop celebrating and cheering for celebrity leadership. It is corrupt, driven by ego and what may have been a good idea has now gone to his head.
The SEC, Twitter shareholders and the public need to seriously consider what they hope for if the allow this crank who cannot sleep have his way with such a platform. Not a word yet from the founder which is just as troubling

  18. The right cries censorship at every point at which their hateful speech is met with the appropriate response from a civil society: refusing to spread it, but not by action of the government, which IS censorship (you know, like the book banning going on by GOP controlled legislatures), but by those of us who find the bile and outfights lies by the right as not being any message worth listening to.

As for snowflakes…. I’ve never met a bigger bunch than “conservatives “ who appear to be hurt by even the slightest of criticisms

But then I guess you do believe inciting violence is appropriate language…

  20. Censorship, you mean rules of engagement, a way of comporting yourself? It's used in every civilized society. Twitter if bought by Musk will be a dustbowl; his idea of paying to tweet will kill the platform, even if he leaves it as is he has already damaged it. It is not like Tesla for SpaceX will not work under dictatorship, especially his, it will be his TruthSocial.

  21. It is not censorship it is allowing an unhinged crank get his hands on any social media. It is a waste of time and only satisfies those in a herd. Which clearly must be you. Think hard, own your own thoughts and consider if you really want musk pulling levers in our society

  28. This guy. Oh great, another billionaire who lacks social graces and impulse control who thinks that he should be the sole owner of a social media platform that reaches folks worldwide.

As if we didn't learn enough about how dangerous so called 'free speech' can be when used in the wrong hands - see TFG. There was a reason why TFG was removed from twitter. His hateful and inciteful tweets caused thousands of folks to literally take up arms and storm the US Capital, i.e. the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Imagine if TFG and others like him are allowed to spew whatever hateful and inciteful rhetoric to millions of folks multiple times per day. That is a recipe for total social/societal upheaval, especially during these fraught political times.

But as a billionaire who won't ever be personally affected by the hordes and unwashed masses that will suffer from his idea of 'free speech' without any regulation and/or vetting, he and his gilded billionaire class will be just fine.

For the rest of us poor saps, oh well, enjoy the 'freedumbs' of 'free speech' and just deal with the negative consequences...

  30. Elon Musk is in a competition with other oligarchs from around the world to become the first trillionaire. He clams to love humanity but the power of a trillion of dollars should not be used for decision making that could affect the course of living conditions for all of humanity. The United States, until recently within a decade or two, was a leader of the Western democracies for democratic determination of progress for humanity. Business structures of all kinds, most of which operate with varying degrees of autocracy, should not control the direction of progress for humanity. Businesses, in a democracy, should recognize that humanity does not exist for economic exploitation. The goals for human progress should be for human survival, preferably for the best possible survival of the human species. Social capitalism working within democratic systems of government have proven the viability capitalism working with social justice and economic justice. Laissez-faire capitalism distorts every governmental system devised since the dawn of civilization toward control of government for personalizing wealth accrual.

  31. "I’m not saying I have all the answers here.”

And that is what makes this man so dangerous. We've already witnessed the destructive capability of social media when not adequately monitored. Civil unrest and insurrection results when disinformation is allowed to flow freely with the assistance of uber-powerful persons with malignant designs. Twitter should not be just a play toy in the hands of a gazillionaire who self admits to not having all the answers.

  32. Methinks this guy has projection issues. Even his name is gay.
I expect he was called 'stinky' in school, (musk geddit) and that is why he keeps trying to attract attention. However I must admit that I would have tolerated a certain amount of bullying if it meant I would become a billionaire in later life.
Every picture of his rather peculiar face is set in an odd grimace.
I think he is not brave enough to 'come out' like an honest iron( rhyming slang)
I also think that his real name must be,' Elon Musk' as who in their right mind would pick a name which makes others think of deodorant as a necessity?

  33. Tesla should not have been taken public if Mr. Musk didn't understand he couldn't blabber about anything he wanted publicly, triggering investors to respond. The SEC protects all the shareholders out here who own bits and pieces of public companies.

  35. If Musk really cares about free speech (spoiler alert: he doesn't) he'd drop a few hundred million to find the Republican Don't Say Gay bills/laws as well as the laws censoring the teaching of history in schools and universities.

He just wants to make sure that white incels can use the N word, kill people though vaccine misinformation, and call for violent insurrection.

  38. Having mega billionaires like Elon Musk throwing their weight around is not consistent my view of an optimistic future. Like Trump, Musk seems to have an insatiable need to be in the news and thumb his nose at any authority other than his own. Not positive character traits.

  39. "Well I think it’s very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech...My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization."

How is allowing anyone to post any batsh it crazy lie they feel like spewing under the guise of 'free speech' going to make this platform "maximally trusted"? There are exceptions to the First Amendment, such as false statements of fact, fighting words, incitement to lawlessness, and defamation. Given that Elon Musk's own Tweets often fall into that category, I don't really think he would be the best arbiter of Free Speech.

  43. I believe that twitter ought to disappear if it can not be an honest platform. By Honest I mean that saying stuff like the 2020 election was stolen can not be said on twitter, it is a lie, period.
To say that rich people already give so much to this country that they shouldn't pay taxes is balderdash as well. Show me a country in this world that is a democracy where the rich don't pay taxes. Elon Musk has uttered that phrase. I don't think a single individual should own anything as powerful as twitter. That is why I say if it can not be made to stick to the truth it should go belly up.
