How 'She-Hulk' beat its toxic haters by making them the villains

The villain of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law isn't some cosmic evil or criminal mastermind. Instead, it's something far more sinister and far more real: a group of toxic, entitled men who call themselves Intelligencia and have devoted themselves to harassing and harming Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), aka She-Hulk.

Intelligencia's misogynistic arguments — Jen doesn't deserve her powers, why do we need another woman superhero, the Hulk is better anyway — are reminiscent not only of real-world sexism, but also of the toxic trolls She-Hulk faced throughout its release. So did She-Hulk anticipate its own detractors?

"1,000 percent," She-Hulk director Kat Coiro told Mashable in a video interview. "We knew we were going to come under fire." Before She-Hulk even aired, the show was review-bombed on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

However, as the show went on and Intelligencia became more prominent, Coiro noted that the trolling appeared to decrease. "I felt like a lot of the negativity at the beginning has stopped," she said. "And I think it's partly because we acknowledge the negative people in the show."

Now if someone attempts to criticize She-Hulk through a misogynistic, trolling lens, they're basically situating themselves in the same camp as someone like Todd "HulkKing" Phelps (Jon Bass), which is just instantly humiliating.

"For them to send these negative messages, it really plays right into our hands and shows that we're one step ahead of them," Coiro explained. "So I don't think it's as satisfying for them."

Having Jen face off against villains like Intelligencia also opens She-Hulk up to exploring some very real and horrifying experiences women may endure. In episode 8, "Ribbit or Rip It," Intelligencia doxxes Jen at a gala before playing footage of her being intimate with a date — footage that was captured without her knowledge or consent. The MCU drawing attention to something as insidious and violating as revenge porn is surprising, yet wildly important, and Coiro was excited to use the platform of one of the biggest franchises in the world to raise awareness for this kind of issue.

"From the opening episode, where [Jen] talks about being a woman and dealing with anger and sexism every day to ["Ribbit or Rip It"], where she does experience a big betrayal to walking in an alley and being jumped by guys at night, we explore so many facets of what it means to be a woman and how difficult it is to be a woman," said Coiro.

On a personal level, Coiro found watching these experiences play out onscreen to be cathartic. "I was recently subjected to some pretty intense sexism, and [Jen's] words from the pilot echoed in my brain," Coiro said. "I deal with this on a daily basis, I deal with men condescending to me all the time. And it was awesome to have something discussing that in popular culture. Forget about me directing; watching the episode, I thought, 'Oh, I feel seen.'"

All episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are now streaming on Disney+.

    18. Sir, there's The Expanse which is a show with a substantial collection of strong female leads AND a diverse cast.

THEN there's She-Hulk featuring a bitter, unlikable 30 something with a blatantly sexist view of men. Obvious not only by the writing and by how the showrunners chose how to respond to criticism. How is it that these days if a show isn't liked for some reason, it's ALWAYS because of toxic fans and not because the show just isn't very good?

      Delete

  4. How did she beat anyone, when fans of good comic book shows stopped watching a long time ago? I’m all in on a good female protagonist, especially with a young daughter at home, but neither of us had any impulse to watch the show after a while. I think we stopped watching after the twerking episode. It’s just so boring. We liked Ms. Marvel, though. More of that.

  5. Is that what they call it? It's funny that they blame the viewers instead of their horrible writing staff. These days Hollywood always blames the viewers for not liking whatever garbage fire of bad writing and bad acting they vomit out as if the fault couldn't possibly be their own.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I enjoyed the show enough even though I was never a She-Hulk comic fan, growing up. With that said, using excuses like racism or toxicity, or male insecurity as reasons why you, or something you like isn’t well accepted, is nothing short of gaslighting. Have a nice day.

You know, pretending not to understand someone else’s insight, i.e “playing dumb”, does not invalidate another’s point.

      Delete
    3. I think you're misunderstanding that it wasn't about the folks who just don't like the show. It was about those trolls who are only complaining or against it because it's a woman. Because it's a super hero show about a woman. That does not make it a bad show. And calling out people for their misogyny is not gaslighting.

      Delete
    4. it is. Choosing to denigrate other’s opinions and feelings, by choosing foul descriptions for them in an attempt to reason the disregard of their negative feedback, is in fact gaslighting.

      Delete
    5. What is your point?

      Delete
    6. ok, last time- in this specific example- vilifying that part of your audience that does not enjoy your show, in no way negates their opinions about it.

It’s like calling someone stupid whom you do not agree with, and thinking, with that said- you won the argument.

      Delete
    7. Idiot vs sealion, fight of the year !

      Delete
    8. when a person gives an obvious misogynistic opinion about a show before it even airs, and that person is referred to as being a misogynist as a result of said opinion it isn't a "foul description" "in an attempt to disregard their negative feedback", it is in fact an accurate description of their character, and the very reason for their review, that is NOT gaslighting, what you are doing IS gaslighting, by pretending that these opinions are just innocent things offered as constructive critique.

      Delete
    9. agreed. They have totally jumped the shark at this point.

    10. it’s all about checks and balances imo when it comes to the different opinions of fandom

  7. "I felt like a lot of the negativity at the beginning has stopped," idk why the director thinks this is a good thing. Sounds like people just stop watching their show altogether, which kinda makes their show some sort of charity project by Marvel than anything serious.

  8. I actually found this show much funnier and more entertaining than Friends. For a change a show that laughs at itself.

    2. yes. I actually liked She-hulk. Most shows on TV are horrible and it's the one show I actually looked forward to. I don't watch much modern programming. I much prefer 80s and 90s sitcoms

      Delete
  9. I loved everything about it, apart from the breaking of the walls between the story and the production.
Every sane person, who is not a young child, knows it’s a made up story, however it doesn’t help the illusion of the MCU when you f**k with that.
Also I’d prefer if they released their series all at once so I could binge watch them. I remember a lot less that way, then I can binge it again in a year or so again.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think that vast majority of people who doesn't like this TV show are simply not into what that TV show offer as they expected comic adaptation and company is vilifying them because there is few toxic and loud haters. The moment when company goes against their own customers, saying they are wrong for not liking what they made.... Well that's a good way how to loose them.

  12. I saw what they were doing, and it was okay in the end, but they spent too many episodes trying to make the audience laugh *at* the main character rather than *with* the main character. I stuck with it because I expected there to be some payoff, and there was, sort of, but I know some life-long she-hulk fans who gave up on it four or five episodes in.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Definitely one of the worst: poorly written, bad acting, meh storylines shows. It’s toxic to those who spent time watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was skeptical at first, but it was a really funny and enjoyable show with great cast and writing. It’s a comedy, so don’t be mad that it’s not serious or the Hulk or whatever, it is something different and I enjoyed watching it with my daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Do they even have an audience? 🙄 Because I guess those who are being insulted by the actresses, showrunners, director and producers were supposed to be the audience 🙄 Did anyone watch this beside to review it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Soooo, if you don’t like the show, it’s because of a woman lead?

    2. I liked 1, I liked 8 with DD. The rest of the show was really meh and IMDB episode scores show my view pretty much shared. Then 9 came out and it was a disgrace. Compare it to Blazing Saddles. That movie was great and goes gonzo at the end without disowning what came before. 9 ends disowning the really meh 7/9ths of their show. If they are agreeing with me how bad those shows were, why did they make them? Sarcasm to follow: Boy, I look forward to Season 2!!!

  21. It's completely self-defeating. Insulting most of the audience to go after a radical few led to the worse reported ratings of any of the Marvel shows, and so little so that even Maslany doesn't believe there will be a 2nd season. So basically, to prove a point, the show runner and her cadre essentially put hundreds of people out of work including themselves. Bravo indeed.

PS: To those who want to lob accusations of being an incel and such, well enjoy season two. Oh wait. There won't be one. Whoops.
