Robot companies, like Boston Dynamics, sign pledge to not have their products turned into weapons | Mashable.
Robot companies pledge they're not going to let the robots kill you
A bunch of robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, came together to pledge to not weaponize their products. So, that's all folks, no need to worry about killer robots.
The companies wrote, in part, in an open letter:
As with any new technology offering new capabilities, the emergence of advanced mobile robots offers the possibility of misuse. Untrustworthy people could use them to invade civil rights or to threaten, harm, or intimidate others. One area of particular concern is weaponization. We believe that adding weapons to robots that are remotely or autonomously operated, widely available to the public, and capable of navigating to previously inaccessible locations where people live and work, raises new risks of harm and serious ethical issues.
The companies that signed the pledge were Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, ANYbotics, Clearpath Robotics, Open Robotics, Unitree Robotics.
This pledge might help allay some fears of folks online, who love to react with basically "oh shit," every time Boston Dynamics puts out one of their videos showing a robot doing wildly athletic things.
"We pledge that we will not weaponize our advanced-mobility general-purpose robots or the software we develop that enables advanced robotics and we will not support others to do so," the companies wrote. "When possible, we will carefully review our customers’ intended applications to avoid potential weaponization."
Notice that the pledge says the companies will not weaponize "general-purpose robots," which seems to leave some room to make robots specifically for the military.
Also, noticeably, a company that has already put guns on robot dogs did not sign this pledge. So killer robots might still come for us yet. Sorry for the bad news.
More in Robotics
Uhuh.... Apart from the Chinese company that demo's their rifle mounted, drone dropped one this week.
ReplyDeleteand all the Ukraine drone tank killers
DeleteEven if they do build a robot soldier, the limits of physics will dictate how much armour it can carry and the size of the battery pack. Nothing that simple obstacles, large pits and RPG-7s couldn't deal with, LOL.
ReplyDeleteWho says the Robot companies will have the control to stop them? I'm not hearing the robots agreeing to this pledge. Mainly, I'm not hearing hackers agreeing either.
ReplyDeleteThat's what Lawrence Robertson kept telling to Del Spooner in I,Robot. So excuse me if I don't trust this.
ReplyDeleteThat’s what Cyberdyne said too…
ReplyDeleteand that went great
DeleteOf course all those movies were just warning us that it’ll never happen because they said so just to put everyone at ease so they can buy robots & they’ll do everything for us & we can sit back & do anything we want without worrying about killer robots taking over the planet & ending the human race
ReplyDeleteNothing to see here
New normal
How - reassuring 😃
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't make me comfortable in the least especially knowing what hackers and viruses can do🫣😅😅
ReplyDeleteMega true
DeleteTranscendence Mega heck with hackers and viruses, I’m worried about when the govt gets their hands on them
DeleteDidn’t Boston dynamics design their original robot to be a military pack mule? So they will carry the weapons so the human can kill you but they won’t pull the trigger. Nope. No trust here. They will do anything for the Benjamin’s. 🤑
ReplyDeleteWhile the movie explain how robot work with human,at first they made for good and after all robot real mission was to wipe human,,the movie was start at impossible then will be in reality, bright idea 🤣🤣🤣humans
ReplyDeleteThat’s what a robot would say
ReplyDeleteIs it for the ages 40 and above?
ReplyDeletemost probably
DeleteAs if they have a choice what the robots will decide to do 😈
ReplyDeletePhew! Now I can relax.
ReplyDeleteI can already hear it: "well technically it wasn't the robot that killed you" 😅
ReplyDeleteThey are programmable and someone will find the way to take control and use it as killing machine.
ReplyDeleteYeah I don’t trust that at all. I have seen every terminator.
ReplyDeleteYeah sure, That's what they all say.
ReplyDeleteI both read the book and seen the movie
ReplyDeleteThats what they said in Terminator 3 also. Its safe and will be good for the world.
ReplyDeleteUmmm that’s something a robot would say to put us off guard 🤔🤣
ReplyDeleteI feel safer already
ReplyDeleteI'm sure glad they're able to control what every person does with their robots after they purchase or otherwise receive one.
ReplyDeleteAmazing choice of words.
ReplyDeleteWhew! Glad that’s settled! For a second there I was getting worried…🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect I could easily take like 3 robot dogs in a fight if I had to
ReplyDeleteMeaning they can mk it kill, right?
ReplyDeleteWell "its NOT the fall that kills you, it's the SUDDEN STOP". 🤐💀🤣👌
ReplyDeleteSo far… lots that we’ve seen in movies, have come true….
ReplyDeleteWar happens and this is it, weapons
ReplyDeleteWhew. I feel much safer with their assurance.
ReplyDeleteTell this to GENE SIMMONS in Runaway 1984 😉
ReplyDeleteAin’t nobody gonna believe that
ReplyDeleteOk, I feel better now 😉
ReplyDeleteIs this like in I robot
ReplyDeleteThey can't kill you but you could have an industrial accident
Pretty sure we've seen this movie before...
ReplyDeleteOmnicorp too
ReplyDeleteWell, it won't last long if they do.

ReplyDeleteDisappointing
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile Turkiye has already confirmed kills with autonomous hunter killer munitions and the designs from these high end providers are being cloned, hardware and software. Current hardware doesnt even know what attached peripherals do, it just follows the control inputs.
ReplyDeleteThe latest DARPA challenge was autonomous drone swarm subterranean search and identification in mixed suterranean environments, ostensibly a civilian search and rescue task, but also a near perfect analog to a severely damaged urban warfare environment where GPS positioning is being blocked.
They dont even need to be the ones doing the killing - as part of a swarm they are most useful as targeting assets - then a flying drone bomb goes in for a guided kill, anyone capable of basic research can make one of those from readily available off the shelf open source hardware and software.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Oh, you're serious. You poor gullible sap

ReplyDeleteI don't trust on it. So Sorry.

ReplyDeleteAs long as they pinky swear
ReplyDeleteTell Elon skywalker
ReplyDeleteThree-Laws safe, right?
ReplyDeleteCompanies pledge?
ReplyDeleteLol and the first thing you do when a human tells you something is to believe them.
ReplyDeleteYah....ok.....
ReplyDeleteTerminate them then
ReplyDeleteEasy hack , they already have footage of them armed with aiming guidance sensors.
ReplyDeletei know they wont do it in MY house....because they wont be there 😅
ReplyDeleteNo....but the robots will take jobs that belongs to human-kind.
ReplyDeleteI'm more suspicious now that they felt the need to state it.
ReplyDeleteWow, already taking more responsibility than Covid-19 vaccines
ReplyDeleteWhat about mother in law’s?
ReplyDeleteUnless they malfunction or get hacked/controlled by unauthorized persons. 🙃

ReplyDeleteLet us start the class action lawsuits now
ReplyDeleteNo thanks
ReplyDeleteHey, wait, I needed them to protect my Semi-Tesla, land yacht. I have to do everything myself : ) Elon Musk Boston Dynamics. They are also going to call you in the morning and ask you to marry them. : ) The White House United Nations NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration United States Air Force Pete Buttigieg
ReplyDeleteThis is why Dune is a warning about thinking machines
ReplyDeleteNot for me.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a pity, I can think of quite a few people that need taking out. Especially with an autonomously functioning armed robot.
ReplyDeletePutin and child molesters for starters and then anyone who sells Broccoli.
And they can make the robots sign pledges not to kill and make them take team building workshops....that would work.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that what they said at skynet
ReplyDeletePhew. Glad they cleared that up 😅
ReplyDeletewell considering old people’s care in Sweden, I don’t know……quick, painless…..😳
Deletethat’s hitting very close to home … you know I’m only a few years younger than you 😜
Deletewell, they may give discounts for two at one go! Like Tescos or Netto! 👍🏻
DeleteHowever, let’s give it another 15-20 years and we’ll revert to that issue! 👨🏻🦳👍🏻
DeleteEverything can get override that proven
ReplyDeleteCon esa porquería te vigilan todo lo que hagas estás monitoreado 24/7 jaa si lo coje un gato lo arraña
ReplyDeleteThey won't kill, but they will make sure you are never out of their sight.....
ReplyDeleteI can't become afraid of robot dogs. Not as long as sledgehammers exist.

ReplyDeleteHacking?
ReplyDeleteAre they Three Laws certified?

ReplyDeleteBut the people that they sell their robots to will waste you for a dime.
ReplyDeleteYour company is, but your competitor won't
ReplyDeleteThis is way too funny! A business promising that their product will not kill us? How many times have we heard that before?
ReplyDeleteToo late liars!! Dogbots with assault rifles already exist and are being deployed globally...LIARS!!!
ReplyDeleteWTF do you call DRONES AHOLES!!
Delete"... as long as you comply"
ReplyDeleteI call bull. These things exist already.
ReplyDeleteNostradamus literally predicted all this.
ReplyDeletethey leave out the part that the dog is capable of twisting an arm completely off in an instant
DeleteThey must adhere to the 3 laws of robotics....didn't anyone pay attention during "I, Robot?
ReplyDeleteGREATTtT
ReplyDelete....unless you don't comply....
ReplyDeleteOh thank goodness!
ReplyDeletemilitary preference first
ReplyDeleteus army did it already https://youtu.be/YlDLwTsRHtU
ReplyDeleteMe thinks they protest too much...
ReplyDeleteThat's what Skynet said too
ReplyDeleteSort of like "I won't come in your mouth"..
ReplyDeleteriiiight, because that will stop "organisations" with ill intent reverse engineering them to use for nefarious purposes...
ReplyDeleteNot until the robot revolt
ReplyDeleteDidn’t Google once have “do no evil” in their mission statement? What happened to that?
ReplyDeleteBut take all our jobs. Wake up.
