'The Mandalorian' brings Lizzo and Jack Black into the Star Wars universe

After cameos from Ahmed Best and Zeb Orrelios, you'd be forgiven for thinking the weekly cameos in Star Wars series The Mandalorian might settle down for a bit. You'd also be wrong.
In the latest Mandalorian episode "Guns for Hire," Din Djarin and Grogu are accompanied by Bo-Katan to the planet Plazir-15. It's a somewhat peculiar place by Star Wars standards because it actually has democratically elected leadership in the form of a Duchess and her lover, Captain Bombardier.
And this is where things get silly. The Duchess is played by none other than Lizzo, though unfortunately there's no flute-playing happening here. And if that wasn't A-list enough, Bowser Jack Black plays Captain Bombardier. It's a huge week for him, I guess.
Unlike the aforementioned Best and Orrelios cameos, there isn't much here in terms of deeper Star Wars lore connections. These are seemingly new characters and it's reasonable to think we may not see them again for a while, if ever. But hopefully Disney opens up its checkbooks to get Lizzo and Black back on set because, man, what a weird and cool thing.

I couldnāt get past the second episode. They should have ended the series after season 2. This one just feels like a lazy money grab.

I know why they are doing this but, everyone knows pedro pascals just do his voices now and the leading role is passing to bo katan, but it feel like is not necessarily. I have more attachment for the bad batch right now

DeleteI'm indifferent to Lizzo. I actually didn't recognize her in the episode. (As background, the only Lizzo song I even know is "Good As Hell".) I could tell from her performance that she wasn't an experienced actor, but that's all I knew about her until I checked YouTube and found out she was in the episode.
DeleteHaving said all that, she didn't ruin the episode or anything. She was okay. She was really secondary to Jack Black and the awesome Christopher Lloyd.
It was a cameo. Of course she didn't "need" to be there. Jack Black, Christopher Lloyd, and Tom Holland's brother didn't "need" to be in there, either.

DeleteI have to agree. Some people're acting like it was some kind of trainwreck, but I just don't see it. It wasn't perfect. I didn't like how they handled the Dark Saber, and I feel like Din and Grogu are getting less and less to do, but I thought it was a really good episode.

ReplyDeleteSpoilers aside, I liked this episode a lot. Not my favorite of the season, but this is the first time I really felt like the cameos added something. I thought Black and Lloyd both did a great job. Lizzo was fine, but you could tell she's not really an actress by trade.

When I said "spoilers aside", I was referring to how everyone else was saying that the headline contained spoilers. Did you really think that Bo Katan claiming the saber was a spoiler, though? I could see describing *how* she claimed it as a spoiler, but it's been obvious since season 2 that she was going to claim it. All the same, I apologize if that was a spoiler.

Deletehad to look up that skot, that was 2002. He has done mostly voice work of late, aside from Jumanji in 2017 and 2019 a lot of his acting work has been niche films released on one streaming service or network but he has never been really out of things entirely.

ReplyDeletejust which one do you believe a has been and which a never were. They're both fairly internationally famous. Jack Black is in several Disney movies aa an actor or voice actor and Lizzo is due to be in the finale of the Simpson's which via Fox acquisition is now owned by Disney. Why would they not make use of their contracted actors and get them visibility when a role comes up, especially when almost anyone could have done those roles as written?
