Tesla starts production of long-awaited Cybertruck

Tesla has started production of the Cybertruck.

The company announced the news on Twitter on Saturday, announcing that the first Cybertruck was built at the company's Giga Texas factory in Austin.

The oddly-shaped Cybertruck was announced in 2019, with Musk proclaiming that the company wanted to "try something different." Besides looking like a low-resolution car from an 80s, sci-fi video game, the Cybertruck has a number of traits that set it apart from the pack, namely a stainless steel body, ultra-tough windows (which famously broke(opens in a new tab) when Musk tested them during the presentation), and a very large windshield wiper.

But the Cybertruck is also very late. Originally, it was supposed to go into production in 2021, but it was delayed several times since then as the company had, as Musk put it, "too much" on its plate.

In April, during a Tesla investors call, Musk lifted the hopes of anyone wanting to buy a stainless steel, electric SUV by saying the company will "probably" have a Cybertruck delivery event in the third quarter of the year. Given that the production finally started, that event might happen fairly soon. It won't, however, be easy to buy the Cybetruck, even if you can afford it; Musk said the production will start slowly and then accelerate, with mass production only starting in 2024.

  1. Maybe. You'll have to check the owner's manual.

  3. Well done Tesla! Love the final design. If you don’t. Simply don’t buy one. This is great American engineering and manufacturing.

    1. so great it looks like it's from Robocop...which was great back in the day, but 30 years later looks stupid and dated.

    2. I’m not a fan of robocop. But I am a fan of excellent American engineering (which this is). Glad you are not in the reservation line. Works for me.

    3. 'excellent American engineering'...it's not even got any good reviews, available for sale, tested thoroughly in the real world, but yes, 'excellent engineering' 🤣👌🤡

      Delete
    4. shame you can't say excellent design. Like all Teslas, it's not going to win any prizes for aesthetics. Some of us actually like our cars to look good. European cars often combine excellent engineering AND beautiful design. You are allowed to have both you know 🤣

    5. that's got to be the most ridiculous thing that I've seen, junk.

    6. amazing engineering! Very cool. To each there own. We don’t think the same things are cool!

    7. What makes the engineering “amazing”? It looks like the cars I doodled when I was 7, before I figured out curves and other shapes. 😂

    8. engineering so good that it will fail, time well tell lol

    9. congratulations, America. You've designed a Staedtler pencil sharpener with wheels, 50+ years after its creation. So proud.

    10. how many of your 7 year old doodles have driven off the assembly line. Come on get real dude. have you any?

      Delete
    11. Wow you couldn't be more off. It's a truck. But at least you are consistent.

      Delete
    12. That doesn't answer my question. Rolling a truck off an assembly line is a miraculous feat of engineering — Ford, Chevy, GMC, Dodge, and others do it every day and have been doing it for decades.

So again I ask, what makes it "amazing engineering"? Or is it just… that it got made? Because if that's the case it kinda seems like a slap in the face of Americans or Tesla; "Wow, they actually made it? That's *amazing.*"

      Delete
    13. So how many 7 year old doodles of yours rolled off assembly lines. My bet is none. Since you compare yourself to Tesla. 48Volt electric system, exoskeleton, Structural battery, Over the air updates, stronger steel than any of then those other manufacturers you mentioned just to get started, Stronger windows as well. If I threw a steel ball at any of those trucks it would end up in your lap. It bounced off the cybertruck. it broke b ut protected the interior. When they hit the side with a sledge it didn't even make a mark. can I do that with any truck you mentioned. Largest charging station network worldwide. Those other guys are going with Tesla. Ford says Tesla is years ahead.

  18. Tesla's Giga Texas facility is almost as impressive as the vehicles it produces.

Considering that Teslas are very unimpressive, with horrible quality and reliability, their Texas facility must be "almost" a dump. But thanks for drawing the line.

  21. Tesla were testing this truck and other new models in NZ - in a private alpine test area

Don't know it specs changed - but this truck was meant to do under 3 secs for 0 to 60 - ie top supercar level
given shakes in earlier tests- given the people who will buy - That acceleration sounds perfect - get some slicks for the wet

  22. Every Tesla I have driven and ridden in has been simply put, an over priced, worthless effort. I have no doubt this "truck" will be nothing less ....

  25. I predict these will not sell well after the initial "must have" novelty gimmick wears off for the limited number of customers willing and able to afford this monstrosity. How many people would even want to have this ugly thing sitting in their driveway and be the laughingstock of their neighborhood? Not many I wager.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why such an ugly look? Like it's from a 70s sci-fi movie. They couldnt give it some aerodynamic curves?

  27. The cargo space looks small for a "truck." It looks like it has the cargo capacity of a SUV with the rear seats folded or maybe just slightly larger than a mid-sized sedan with the rear seats folded.

    1. The PS1 look still seems very dumb. It brings no benefit to the end user. Unless they manage some breakthrough on range, the likes of the R1T, F-150 lightning, and upcoming chevy silverado EV and ram EV are more interesting, if still vastly overpriced.

That's 95% of trucks now. Literally. Crew cab short bed trucks make up something like 95% of all truck sales, with long beds getting a measly 3%. I dont get it, but a lot of people seem to.

      Delete
    2. People like the idea of having a truck but don't actually want one, that's why. "mid sized trucks", IE, all those half ton pickups that aren't work trucks are basically SUV's with a truck bed. As someone who works in the commercial construction industry, I actually prefer my Honda Pilot and just tow a trailer if I need to do truck things. An SUV actually gives me more utility than a truck does as a personal AND work vehicle. If it was 100% a work vehicle then, yes, I'd want a 1 ton truck with tool boxes but those are ~$150,000 new now so there really isn't any point unless I get a company truck.

I have a 12ft trailer I tow with tool boxes attached to it that I bought for $6,000. 2015 honda pilot + trailer and I can do more work than what the people in those half ton trucks can do. Trucks have their place but the half ton "trucks" are trying to be as much of an SUV as possible while still meeting the definition of a truck because people actually want an SUV but like the idea of having a truck because Murica'

  30. You couldn't really identify with the "redneck" lifestyle driving one of those could you!?
And with all those flat panels flexing and rattling on a bumpy road you'd go deaf into the bargain. By the looks of the tyres on the thing is off-roading part of the image? Who knows what purpose a vehicle like this might serve. Being a European I've never understood the fascination with pickups anyway. For a tradesman it might make sense for loads that have to be lowered in but anything else is open to the weather and risks getting stolen.

    1. The redneck thing is a trope, a tired one at that. everyone drives trucks, im black and drive one and live in the city city.

at this point trucks are more of a statement vehicle, theyve taken the place of the old big body cadillacs n such. Sure you could buy a bmw/lexus/mercedes etc etc etc, but those come off as more jerklike and fancy.

A nice truck is grounded in its mentality, youre a dude whos doing ok and wants to be seen as such but youll still help move a couch. even if its not a loaded F150 even a small basic clean old single cab still gets nods of approval at the gas pump.
