The lip readers found some new targets last night at the 2024 Golden Globes: Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Keleigh Teller.
In one of the most talked-about clips from the show, Gomez crouches down next to Swift and Teller and urgently whispers something to them. If Swift and Teller's dramatic facial expressions are anything to go on, whatever gossip she shared was scalding hot.
One Twitter/X user interpreted two side-by-side videos of the moment for viewers: Gomez said, "I asked for a photo, but [Kylie Jenner] said no." Teller replied, "With Timothée?" Gomez urgently nods. Queue Swift and Teller's sensational reactions. After listening to one of the videos literally dozens of times, I can finally hear, "With Timothée?" But there is no footage verifying the photo story.
In true Twitter fashion, the mess and drama mongers ran with this gossipy explanation, maximizing its reach with speculation and memes. Several users posted humorous videos of what it might have looked like for Jenner to reject Gomez's photo request, while others laughed about Teller's lack of discretion — and the Gomez x Swift fans celebrated their enduring friendship.
One user called out the misogyny of everyone on the internet seemingly believing some random rumor another user made up, one that pits two powerful women against one another.
This moment thankfully has yet to reach the heights of other internet speculation gone too far, like 2022's Spitgate. The obsession with this video has a lot to do with the internet's fixation on the key players. At every awards show Swift attends all eyes are on her, then there are all the people invested Jenner and Chalamet's relationship on the heels of making things red carpet official...and the nosey people who will get involved in any inkling of drama online.

Why does every action a female celebrity takes have to be amplified and manipulated to be stereotypical mean girl dramatic behavior?

On a night that was imo "boys club" heavy with awards and monologue jokes, can we not refer to Selena as "immediately running over to Taylor with gossip." IDC if she was/ this is correct (thanks Keleigh lol), it does nothing but diminish and misogynize Taylor, Selena, and their friendship in the industry and make it seem like they had no business being there.
