Trump guilty verdict: Now what, asks the internet | Mashable.

Trump found guilty on all 34 counts, social media asks: Now what?

What happens next? Answer: A lot of online discourse, then sentencing.

It's official: Donald J. Trump, former president of the United States of America and current Republican candidate for the presidency, is a convicted felon.

And while we wait for sentencing on July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention, it may not surprise you that the internet has thoughts on what should happen next.

In a surprisingly fast turnaround for a case of this magnitude, a Manhattan jury took just a few days to reach the guilty verdict. Also surprising: the jury found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt on every one of the 34 counts of fraud connected to the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Reporters had earlier expected the jury wouldn't reach a verdict for another day at least.

The jury worked fast, in other words — but so did the internet, led by Wikipedia editors. (Update: the change has been removed, and Trump's page on Wikipedia has been locked.)

Each count carries a fine of up to $5,000 plus a four-year sentence (they would run concurrently) at Judge Juan Merchan's discretion. Those expecting jail time may be disappointed; fines are a more usual punishment in this kind of first-time fraud case.

Social media denizens quickly suggested that Trump could no longer vote for himself in his current home state, Florida. But a correction soon followed: Trump will still be able to vote so long as he is not actually incarcerated.

One of the most frequently asked questions: Can Trump still run for president, even as a convicted felon? The answer, bizarrely, is yes.

Regardless, the historic moment was an occasion for online news outlets to try out appropriate headline ideas. One of the oldest and most controversial, the Drudge Report, repeated the word "guilty" 34 times.

Over on Twitter/X, users also battled for eyeballs with the best jokes they could muster. Dictionary.com went for an unbeatable subtweet:

Anthony Scaramucci, who infamously worked as director of communications at the Trump White House for just 10 days, may been teeing this one up for a while:

While, of course, many Americans parsed the news through the lens of celebrity culture and memes.

  9. Given that the orange baby with the small....hands...stacked the jury with at least one person he expected to support him, and block the unanimous verdict, being found guilty by 12 jurors on 34 counts is amazing. They made the decision based on evidence - documents, emails etc, and, in spite of this reprehensible human trying every trick in the book to intimidate the jury, 10 violations of a gag order and "eyeballing" the Judge, justice has been served.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. wrong. It wasn't a unanimous verdict. Jurors were told 4 or more as they just changed the rules to suit themselves. The justice system is yet another corrupt system with judges pockets being lined or held to ransom over some dirty info thats been gotten on them. Wake up fgs. There was no justice here. Nada.

    5. and, it was unanimous on all 34 counts, and it was relatively quick.

  10. Trump finally convicted! Hoorah! But don't get the idea that that's the end of it. That man lives a charmed life and he will almost certainly never go to jail. My prediction of what'll happen is this: He'll be sentenced in the normal will but will immediately be released on bail pending an appeal. And this will be only the start of a process that'll drag on for years, probably until he dies of old age. And God help us all if he gets to be president again.

      Delete
    2. The "Russia hoax" resulted in 37 indictments, 7 guilty pleas and 5 jail sentences. In this case, the jury heard the evidence (some of it twice) and didn't think it was a fabrication at all.

      Delete
    3. So an ordinary jury can't be relied on to give an honest verdict? Why pay a woman so much money if you have done nothing wrong, and then try to cover it up Most right-thinking people would expect him to be convicted. America will be the laughing-stock of the world if he becomes president. Another bonus for Putin.

    6. No one is falling. It the truth, something little hands hates.

      Delete
    7. This has nothing to do with the media, it was evidence based - from little hands himself in many cases - records, emails, recordings - where do the media fit in? except to support your biased view of the world. He tried, unsuccessfully, to stack the jury with at least one Trump supporter, emphasised that a majority verdict was not acceptable and 12 people found him guilty beyond any reasonable doubt on 34 counts. Given he has also been convicted of sexual assault, fraud and deformation, how can any sane person support the orange baby?

      Delete
    8. If only UK residents could remain uninformed, the news feeds are full of Trump accusing others of failings that more accurately apply to him!

      Delete
    9. wrong. Again.

    10. It has everything to do with the media this trial was by media. the media have lies about his since 2016. have you been asleep for the last 8 years.

    11. you mean telling the truth and the media spins it into he's a dictator when in reality the dictator is illegally in office right now.

      Delete
    12. But no doubt people will. In other countries a prominent politician who is found guilty of a crime would be booted out of the party p.d.q. for bringing them into disrepute. However some Americans have become so brainwashed that they can't see the truth even when someone is proved to be a criminal. God save America from themselves.

Here on earth, we all know he's guilty.

      Delete
    5. Have you considered the possibility that he was actually guilty? And it's the Jury that decide, not the Judge. In this case, the orange temper tantrum on legs was given way more leeway than an ordinary person, trying intimidation, character assassination and every diversionary tactic in the book. His wife was having his son and he was banging a porn star. That is not in doubt, or why pay $130,000 to bury the story?

      Delete
  13. A few things that happened which not a lot of people realise.

Judge in the case told the jury you don't unanimously agree on which crime was committed as long as they pick at least 1.
and among the crimes they can pick one which he isn't even charged with,
Judge silenced trump with gag orders that are designed for people coming forward to protect their identity. some of trumps people were not even allowed to take the stand and give their evidence.
This is Marxism and now America has kangaroo courts in the banana republic.

Sad, sad, sad, day for America.

    4. Trump is only saying what his supporters want to hear. He is only in it for himself. The US needs a president who can unite the country and do justice to it's foundation which is to keep the United States united. Trump is too divisive and uses language to entice fierce clashes between the left and right. No other president before him has divided the nation as much as he has.

I used to support Trump years back, until I saw how he behaved when he lost the election. I saw him as someone who is a traitor to the founder and first president of the republican party Abraham Lincoln, who once said "a house divided against itself cannot stand". a quote which is just as poignant now as it was during the Civil War.
