Tesla's Model Y in the U.S. has just gotten cheaper — if you don't mind having one less motor, that is.

The company has launched a new variant of its recently redesigned Model Y electric SUV. Called the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, it starts at $44,990 before federal tax credit and local incentives.

For comparison, the Long Range All-Wheel Drive configuration starts at $48,990.

For your money, you get just one motor driving the rear axle, with slightly slower acceleration — taking the car from 0-60 mph will take you 5.4 seconds, as opposed to 4.6 seconds on the All-Wheel Drive version. But you also get significantly more range: 357 vs. 327 miles, according to Tesla.

Adding the $7,500 federal tax credit takes the car's price to $37,490. Deliveries start in three to five weeks, however, while the All-Wheel Drive variant is available immediately.

The cheaper version of Tesla's best-selling car should give sales a boost, and Tesla needs it, given it just had a pretty awful quarter. It's worth noting that Tesla sales have plummeted in Europe and that's despite the fact that the Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y has been available in many markets there for a few weeks now.

  1. Most people are looking for an EV with the same range and more power than their gas powered counterparts in the price range of $25,000 to $30,000. It's doable without self driving and other extra fluff. Until Tesla puts that together, it won't be the next Ford/Chevy/Chrysler in American auto sales.

  2. I wouldn't buy a Tesla for anything. However if they were being given away.. I might consider..

    3. Tesla have cut production costs and can afford to sell their cars at lower prices. Very different from most of the competitors that are selling their EVs at best at cost and in many cases at a huge loss(like Lucid).
And I guess you are not an American since you are spreading hate against the most American car brand. Want China to take over the car market?

    4. not American, just a guy that hates Tesla with a passion. And yes, I would love to see China destroy them.

    5. You would love to see a one party dictatorship with zero concern for human rights take over the world's car market. Not very smart.

Its just childish name calling. You guys do this to everybody who disagrees with you politically. It belittles the true victims of the nazi party and makes you look like you can't articulate the actual issues you have with the right.

    2. is was really and truly was a Nazi salute. The rest of the world saw it. If my holocaust surviving grandparents saw it, they would recognize it immediately.

Question: What's the difference between a "real" Nazi and someone who supports or excuses them?

      Answer: None

Also, as a Jew, I support Israel, so yes. There's that.

    5. WTF.. read or watch a movie about WOII. they buy the car because of the car. not the owner of the company.

also check some company’s during WOII like mercedes, Ralph lauren etc.

      or watch a movie

      Schindler's List.
      The Zone of Interest.
      La Vita è Bella.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

      Delete
    6. first of all, it's WWII. I don't know what WOII is.

Second of all, I had grandparents who survived and occasionally quietly sat me down and talked about their experiences. I also know how to read, not just watch movies. Try reading Anne Frank's diary. You might learn something. I've used it as an important tool for learning about hate and intolerance.

I see that you're from the Netherlands. I case you didn’t notice, most of Europe IS boycotting Tesla's cars. The sales have gone down dramatically since Musk did the Nazi salute. The stock price has also dropped dramatically.

People can use their money as a tool to create change, not just to buy stuff. It's one thing to buy a quality product, but what is that product worth if it puts money in the pocket of someone who is corrupt, intolerant and/or cruel? I don't eat Panera Bread, nor will I ever. The same can be said for the other companies that you mentioned. I'm painfully aware of many companies' ties to profiteering from WWII. I don't buy products from companies who use child labor either. It's called being an educated consumer. Try it out.

Some companies have a history of being altruistic like Bomba socks for example. Many companies need the support of an educated consumer so that they can continue to create positive changes, not merely sell stuff.

  16. The problem with lowering the price of an existing model hurts all Tesla owners. The value of your already owned Tesla will drop two fold in the secondary used car market. That is in top of all the hurt to the brand directly attributable to Elon Musk. You can check used Tesla prices.

I traded my lovely lava orange-wrapped Model 3 for a BMW i4 M50 and happy as a smiley.

    4. hope it help 😉 Brief Summary of Tesla’s Latest Report
Tesla’s latest financial and operational update, covering the first quarter of 2025, highlights several key points:
      1. Declining Sales and Production
      • Tesla produced over 362,000 vehicles and delivered more than 336,000 vehicles in Q1 2025.
      • This represents a significant drop compared to previous quarters. For example, in Q4 2024, Tesla delivered over 495,000 vehicles, indicating a notable sequential decline.
      2. Financial Performance
      • Tesla reported a substantial 71% decrease in net income for the quarter, with both sales and profits falling short of analyst expectations.
      • The company is experiencing its worst quarter for stock performance in three years, with sales estimates down 13% from the previous year.
      3. Regional Sales Challenges
      • In China, Tesla’s largest market outside the U.S., sales of China-made vehicles fell 6% year-on-year in April, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline.
      • Deliveries of Model 3 and Model Y from the Shanghai factory dropped 25.8% from the previous month.
      • In Europe, Tesla’s new car sales in the UK and Germany hit their lowest in over two years in April, falling 62% and 46% year-on-year, respectively, despite rising demand for electric vehicles in those markets.
      4. Competitive and External Pressures
      • Tesla is losing market share to competitors such as BYD in China, which saw a 19.4% year-on-year increase in sales, and Volkswagen and BYD in the UK, which experienced triple-digit growth.
      • The company is also facing increased costs from tariffs and protests related to CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations, which have led to boycotts and vandalism at Tesla facilities.
      5. Strategic Response
      • CEO Elon Musk is focusing on future technologies, particularly robotaxis and humanoid robots, as potential avenues for recovery and renewed growth.
      • Despite the current downturn, Musk remains optimistic about Tesla’s long-term prospects, emphasizing the company’s history of overcoming challenges.
      6. Energy Storage
      • Tesla deployed 10.4 GWh of energy storage products in Q1 2025, continuing its expansion in the energy sector.
      Conclusion
Tesla’s latest report reflects a challenging period marked by falling sales, shrinking profits, and intensifying competition, particularly in key markets like China and Europe. The company is betting on future technologies such as autonomous vehicles and robotics to regain momentum, but faces significant near-term headwinds both financially and reputationally

    5. ... In May 2025, Tesla's sales in California continued to decline, with a 15.1% drop in registrations compared to the previous year, resulting in a market share of 43.9% for electric vehicles. This decline is attributed to increased competition and backlash against Musk's political actions.
