Facebook continues to crack down on spammy accounts.

Facebook to crack down on unoriginal, copycat content

Meta removed 10 million fake profiles impersonating creators as part of a broader push to clean up your Feed.

It can be frustrating to swipe through your Facebook Feed and be inundated with accounts dedicated to stealing other people's work, impersonating people, and generally participating in copycat antics. But Facebook is trying to put a stop to that slop.

In April, Meta implemented changes aimed at improving the Feed experience by reducing spammy content tactics used to boost views, gain followers, and monetize inauthentically, ultimately leading to a less enjoyable scrolling experience. The platform announced it would reduce the reach of, or completely remove, accounts that engage in this behavior, while boosting visibility for those who share original content.

In a Monday blog postMeta said it "took action on" 500,000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior during the first half of 2025 by "applying measures ranging from demoting their comments and reducing the distribution of their content to preventing these accounts from monetizing." The platform also took down 10 million profiles impersonating large content producers.

"But there’s more to do. Too often, the same meme or video pops up repeatedly ‑ sometimes from accounts pretending to be the creator and other times from different spammy accounts. It dulls the experience for all and makes it harder for fresh voices to break through," Meta wrote in its blog post.

Going forward, accounts that repeatedly reuse others' videos, photos, or text posts without proper transformation or credit will lose access to Facebook's monetization programs and see a drop in overall content distribution. Facebook also said it will reduce the visibility of duplicated videos "so that original creators can get the visibility that they deserve." These changes will roll out gradually over the coming months.

If you're worried these new protocols will affect your work, Facebook says you can do a few things: post original content, make meaningful enhancements, tell a story, avoid watermarks, and use high-quality captions.

  4. Now they just need to assist the x number of people who keep losing access to their accounts and clicking on shit giving up their info. How does it take 10 seconds to lose your account and 2 months to prove you’re the same person who created the account meanwhile they have all your login history, location, entire history of content but can’t verify your info…? Lazy and poor support needs fixed next.

    1. I'm not so sure. I think the key motivation for Facebook is the monetisation. A lot of these accounts are gaming the system. That makes it worthwhile for FB to go after them.

    1. I read an article a couple years ago about how they had deleted something crazy like three billion users over the previous decade.

It’s crazy how many they can delete without scaring away advertisers, and it’s even crazier to then think about how many bots and fake accounts there must actually be if they’re deleting well north of a hundred million accounts per month (at least at the time I read that article.)

      Edit: found the article. (https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/11/13/tech/facebook-fake-accounts)

It’s even crazier than I remembered - they deleted over 5.4 billion accounts in 2019 alone.

    2. Advertisers are already starting to get scarred Facebook numbers will show viewers way higher to alternatives but with little to no return

      Delete
    3. I would imagine that advertisers care more about the conversion than total # of users. It's better to convert 25% of 100 users than 1% of 1000.

      Delete
    4. Yeah advertisers look at the $ value after someone click, its $ spent in ads vs $ generated, that's it.

    5. Years ago they went to court after falsifying video engagement numbers. They lost, but money they had to pay was a slap on the wrist compared to what they make every year. It killed a lot of good companies during the pivot to video.

    11. Yeah but then ads start to reach people and they can charge more for those ads and reduced overhead dealing with spam accounts.

    12. Advertisers won't pay top dollar anymore when they see how Facebook's real human base is a lot smaller than they thought.

  36. I run a Facebook group for my neighborhood and I get so many spammers trying to join. Sometimes they slip up and you can see the hundreds of Indian accounts linked to the one they try to join with, or they mismatch the gender with the profile image. Sometimes the bio is something like "adult female bio, lighthearted, whimsical". The common profiles now were all created about a year ago and have a set of 4-10 friends who all like each others pictures but never post any comments.

I've been forced into becoming a profile detective just to prevent the group being over run by people selling duct cleaning and car detailing.

  61. They deleted me. I don’t use FB as a ‘social network’. I admin a group trying to get animal abuse and abusers/scammers removed. They don’t want anyone objecting to actual criminals in Vietnam and elsewhere posting fake animal rescue videos and other cruelty. That stuff generates engagement because the average FB user is entirely gullible. It’s the same with every platform. Even if they realize content is a scam, they have to engage and express their indignation, clueless that they’re making the BS profitable.
