NASA satellites tracking greenhouse gases may be decommissioned under Trump.

NASA's carbon tracking satellites are on Trump's chopping block

The satellites targeted for removal are the only ones monitoring Earth's greenhouse gases.

  1. Trump proves once again that he is NOT Interested in Climate Change Research!!! Not only has he ramped up fossil fuel use over cleaner, more climate change friendly energy, but has ramped up coal mining & oil + gas production, in an effort to win votes!!!!! Unfortunately for the planet, the American public seem, at the moment, to be backing him. When the weather causes disasters, will that change????

  24. It looks they could be repurposed for other tasks. Carbon dioxide measurements taken from a satellite. I doubt very seriously that it's an accurate assessment anyway and you know NPR isn't going to report anything the way they should, fair and balanced. Also, the air molecules bounce around violently, and I doubt very seriously, that a measurement taken now is the same measurement in a week.

Seems like another great way to waste money and if those satellites can't be repurposed, they should be terminated.

I'm sure the climate changes but it certainly hasn't been because of man and especially not the United State. China and the 2nd world should clean up their own polluting. The U.S. spends billions every year on gigantic HEPA filters in our manufacturing plants causing the prices on everything they produce to go way up. A plant manager told me that they spent $5,000,000 on their filters every year and that was back in the 1990s... can't imagine how expensive filters are now.

I do think that NASA has important work to do in space, but NASA needs to get back to manned space missions, long-lasting better energy sources and finding another planet to populate in case this one is struck by a large asteroid ending everything.

Trump is definitely getting us away from this bull crap woke agenda that helps nobody except our NFPs and feeds money back into PACS that end of funding Democrat candidates.

  25. I understand why the administration is doing this and it makes sense if you are opposed to the "global warming" theory - which is what it is. But this President isn't "opposed to science" or opposed to space dominance. Liberal reporters are just seemingly incapable of writing an unbiased article as we see here. This is the President who founded Space Force so that we WOULD have dominance in space, just not measuring how much carbon dioxide is being produced and where. If they are so worried about CO2 then fund and staff a movement to plant a million trees that aggressively both grow and take in optimal CO2 to live and grow. There have been studies that have shown this would truly absorb tons and tons of CO2 and place it in a stable "container" -the trees themselves who will endlessly keep taking in CO2. But liberals don't really want a SOLUTION, they want to pick at the scab and keep it a wound for reasons we can take a pretty good guess at.

One example, Trump wants to throw out migrants, but, not addressing the Climate will eventually render many equatorial countries unlivable -- creating hundreds of millions+ climate refugees who will have no choice but to migrate or die. 62. Recent developments indicate a planned termination of data collection, processing, and distribution from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites, originally scheduled for June 30, 2025.
The deadline was subsequently postponed to July 31, 2025, following a request from the head of NASA's Earth Science Division.
The stated reason for ending data flow from these satellites, some of which have been operating beyond their planned five-year lifespan, is to "mitigate a significant cybersecurity risk," according to NOAA's Office of Satellite and Product Operations.
These DMSP satellites were initially launched between 1999 and 2009.
The United States Space Force had previously determined that the DMSP satellites would reach the end of their operational lives sometime between 2023 and 2026.
Additionally, Landsat 7, an Earth-observing satellite, was officially decommissioned on June 4, 2025. The final transmission from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to Landsat 7 occurred at 1:08 PM CST on that date. Landsat 7 had been in orbit for 26 years, having launched in April 1999. Its active science mission, focusing on collecting imagery data of Earth's land, inland waters, and coastal waters, concluded in early 2024, with the final

  87. How refreshingly consistent of this administration to tackle climate change by eliminating the inconvenient evidence of its existence. Nothing says "America First" quite like blinding ourselves to planetary realities that might interfere with fossil fuel fantasies and corporate profits.
The elegant logic is breathtaking: if satellites can't monitor rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and atmospheric changes, then clearly these phenomena cease to exist. It's the governmental equivalent of closing your eyes and declaring the oncoming train has vanished.
Perhaps we should be dismantling the alphabet —imagine how much simpler Trump's daily existence would become without all those troublesome letters forming coherent words and complete sentences. No more embarrassing transcripts, no more documented lies, no more evidence of his spectacular verbal incompetence preserved for posterity.
Perhaps they could start with the letters S-C-I-E-N-C-E, since those seem to cause particular distress in this administration. Follow up by eliminating F-A-C-T-S and

They are using the International Space Station as one platform and a separate dedicated satellite as the other. They are, essentially, duplicating the efforts of other weather reporting satellites and getting paid big bucks to do it. The ISS isn't going anywhere. We can turn the program back on if we feel it is necessary. We can keep the dedicated satellite in orbit with minimum maintenance from a NASA flight controller until we figure out whether it can be repurposed or just drop it over an ocean to eliminate another of the thousands of pieces of space junk we already have to deal with. It is pointless to keep pouring millions of dollars a year into these redundant data collection programs just so a handful of white lab coats can keep their non-productive, over paid jobs.
