  1. Of course drump doesn’t care about the environment, he isn’t going to be around long enough to worry about the consequences! musk is another gem who doesn’t care about the environment. I’m sure he thinks he can just go to Mars when he destroys the planet!

  43. Sounds neutral-leaning-positive, as on one hand, this should make it easier for ASTS to launch stuff, but on the other hand, it does benefit SpaceX quite a lot.

Regardless of the short-term effects (if any), the benefit it provides ASTS in the long run should be more significant than the fact it provides this same benefit to the few competitors it has.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At this point I don’t see SpaceX as a true competitor. They don’t have a pathway to provide the same service as AST. They can’t provide any of the non communication services AST can. Starlink is a great terminal service, but they aren’t succeeding at D2D.

AST is AST’s competitor. Either they execute their business plan or they don’t. At least that’s the way I see it.

      Delete
    2. You may not see them as a competitor, but the overall market (and likely most hedge funds) do, considering the way the stock moved when (Musk-backed) Trump won, and then when Musk and Trump had a falling out.

Personally, I think they have a big enough overlap to be considered competitors.
Also, there is nothing preventing either company from expanding functionality farther into the other's territory (obviously with new patents).

      Delete
    3. New patents dont override existing patents.

      Delete
    4. No, but often times, patents are extremely specific, and you can patent similar technologies / formulas that achieve the same result.
That's how many off-brand medicine producers manage to get patents to produce "existing" stuff.

      Delete
    5. Mechanical and software patents can often be easy to get around sure. But some may not be super easy.

Just want to comment that isn't how off-brand medicine works. Medicine patent is 20yrs (USA) and often only 8-12 after finally on shelves (FDA). CVS sells acetaminophen because Tylenol patent is expired.

Tweaking a drug just enough would be too expensive and complicated (probably FDA). But mechanical/software there's no governing body to have to go through.

      Delete
    6. Actually you are right, I mistook the common way to bypass software/mechanical patents with medical ones.

Anyhow, space stuff is very complex, and I'd expect there be many unique solutions to similar problems, and out of those, hopefully there are a few which are compatible with each other in regards to building satellite stuff.

    7. Usually that is after patent protection ends for pharma…

    9. ASTS's tech still hasn't been proven at scale. Nor are we close to being able to test it at scale. As bullish as I am, we still have a long ways to go. If there are too many users connected to our network, will that slow down or limit 5G access? Will the pricing models of our partners be favorable to us and match with ours and kook's revenue projections? Our success is not a foregone conclusion, and we do not have unlimited resources. SpaceX has basically unlimited resources. They can afford to fail and fail and fail again. They are also fully vertically integrated, as in they can launch their own satellites. That is an insane advantage. I would not count them out so easily.

      Delete
    10. SpaceX’s tech failed at scale. We have a legitimate pathway to scale. That’s the difference.

I would much rather be us than them.

      Delete
    11. I am sure ASTS management has thought about bandwidth.

      Delete
    12. Exactly. ASTS might have the lead but spacex ain’t going down without a fight. All they need to do is get starship online and they can blanket the earth in decent sized phased arrays. Plus they’re definitely working to solve the unfolding problem and 6G standards will make it easier to connect to phones from space. If SpaceX provides data/calling/texting to all newish phones are people going to care about ASTS’ technical superiority? No. Is there only one solution to the problems that ASTS has solved (and documented the solutions to)? Probably not. Could SpaceX try to win market share by competing on cost? Absolutely.

      Delete
    13. I should add: is there room for two players in this space? Yes.

      Delete
    14. They can’t offer the service at less than cost…simply to put competitors out of business. That is illegal. And I think that they will never be able to offer what ASTS can on technology. Bandwidth is key and they don’t have it…and their satellites will never work with regular cell phones alone. That’s just from what I have read from people more knowledgeable than me.

      Delete
    15. First of all it is not illegal to offer a service at less than cost. I could name quite a few examples but I’ll leave it at ride share platforms like Uber. Also SpaceX’s cost will be much lower initially because launch makes up the majority of the up-front costs. Pretty much everyone here who has done a valuation model on ASTS has assumed that it will be a crazy high margin business, but that changes if there’s heavy competition on price.

I have done a lot of DD and I’m heavily invested, but never is a strong word.

Another company could leapfrog ASTS tech by solving the problem of using multiple discrete satellites as a single phased array. Might not be possible but it would massively increase the gain/signal strength and lower satellite size/cost.

They can get more bandwidth. ASTS did. What if the FCC decides to do a spectrum auction? EchoStar owns a ton of cellular spectrum that they are just camping on and the FCC isn’t happy about that. They have announced plans to launch their own D2D service but it’s clearly a stall tactic while they figure out how to monetize (sell?) the spectrum.

What do you mean they won’t work with regular cell phones? They work just fine with new phones. Since people replace their phones all the time, in a few years the phones that don’t work with Starlink will be all but forgotten.

I’m a huge ASTS bull but you should take what you read here with a grain of salt. There’s a lot of people that have done cursory research and then repeat the same talking points as if they are absolutes. Things change and the D2D market is still in its infancy.

Are they still in the game? Know they are way behind but just find it interesting they have not gone bankrupt or had a breakthrough.

      Delete
    17. 1 tweak in the patent, and spacex has their way of doing it. The technology is proven, so Im sure they're looking at it and trying to figure out a way to do it the same, but different. Elon might be a dipshit, but his scientists sure know their shit. That really doesnt concern me too much though at this time, because the market is so huge! Im feel in the near future ASTS/SpaceX, will be like Ford/GM of Satellite Tech.

      Delete
    18. What I meant was they have no pathway with their current technology. 1 tweak in the patent and then 4 years of “broadband to your cell next quarter” announcements from Musk they might have something working.

Remember, it’s not just the antenna on the satellite. It’s the entire architecture of the system. SpaceX bought Swarm and used their SpaceBEE architecture, which was designed for an IoT application. We see the challenges they have faced because of that.

It literally would be back to the drawing board to deploy a system as capable as ASTs. Yea, they can do it but it will take years. By then we will have two constellations built and working. They won’t matter.

      Delete
    19. Competition is always good and should benefit both companies and boost us up.

  51. And look at that. Maybe Elon picking a fight with “the most powerful man on Earth” didn’t play out so well for the “richest man on Earth”.

Damn it’s bittersweet, ironic, and quite hilarious how dudes with egos never learn there’s always someone with an upper hand.

Sure hope he enjoying his McDonalds meal together. And it looks like DOGE informed the team that SpaceX is getting too many contracts ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Actually your first premise is wrong. Predatory pricing is illegal. There are good reasons why it is illegal. It distorts markets and leads to higher prices and less market participants later on. It’s also related to price fixing which is also illegal. If you read what I wrote it contained the caveat “just to put competitors out of business”. That is a distinction with a difference. I don’t know all the technical data…but I doubt Apple and or Samsung will modify their phones to work with Starlink (at their cost) when they don’t have to do a thing and all the phones will work with asts. Where I do agree with you is that a different solution can always occur and that there is often “irrational exuberance” I believe that they have the best shot to win this race with a better product. But it isn’t a slam dunk. They need to get satellites launched asap and they need a bunch of them and they need to work and they need to handle many customers at one time. But all those problems have been solved terrestrially and I think the biggest challenge will be receiving the signals clearly and consistently in orbit. But I’m not an RF engineer.
