I loaded mine the day it was available in my state and I’ve tried to find any opportunity to use it, but there just isn’t one.
In my experience, anyone who won’t just accept your face and word won’t accept some weird thing on your phone either.
Nobody understands what it actually is when you show it to them. Technically it’s in the validated section of Wallet and requires Face ID to verify that it’s really your information being shown.
In practice that is absolutely worthless because absolutely no one knows that, and if they did somehow happen to know it, they aren’t allowed to accept it anyway. If they aren’t in the position to make the judgement call to just take your word for it, they aren’t in the position to accept that, either.
It might be useful for domestic flights but I haven’t tried it and honestly I’m reluctant to do anything when attempting to board a plane that singles me out as in any way unusual or too “clever.”
I believe this is just the chicken (or egg?) of getting everyone on to a national digital ID system, and let me tell you I don’t believe the purpose of that is to make it easier to board a plane…
I just saw on MacRumors that US Passports can now be added as a Digital ID to Apple Wallet for use at TSA checkpoints.
For anybody interested, here are a couple of related Apple Support documents that discuss the setup process, data sharing details, and security: https://support.apple.com/en-us/123719 https://support.apple.com/en-us/118260
Two things I learned from Apple’s articles: about the Live Photo function and that the chips in passports are readable by Apple devices.
I’m going to wait a few days before adding my passport—I’m not that interested in beta testing via releases, as is the practice in Silicon Valley these days—but at the moment, the benefits seem to outweigh the disadvantages and risks for me.
I’m going to wait a few days before adding my passport—I’m not that interested in beta testing via releases, as is the practice in Silicon Valley these days—but at the moment, the benefits seem to outweigh the disadvantages and risks for me.
I’m trying to understand exactly what the benefits are. Maybe I can use this at a TSA checkpoint if I’ve lost my wallet while I am traveling away from home (domestically), but I’m always going to have my physical license with me otherwise. As I live in the rural suburbs (there are two separate farms on my one-mile long road), anyplace I go will require driving from home unless I hire a limo service.
As for beta testing, I think digital driver licenses and IDs has been a thing on iPhones for a couple of years now.
For me, some of the benefits are related to that I live in an urban area—so I am less reliant on my car than suburban and rural people—and my current driver’s license is not TSA-compliant. I also want to use my passport for Digital ID because my passport number is not permanently assigned while my driver’s license number never changes.
At airports, I usually have digital boarding passes so using a Digital ID means less stuff to juggle at security checkpoints. Finally, if I am outside of the USA and need to replace a lost or stolen passport, perhaps the Digital ID will help embassies and consulates verify my identity more quickly.
I view the passport in Apple Wallet as beta because the capability just launched and the verification process with the federal government is new.
Right now only a quarter of all states offer digital DLs through Wallet. This opens up digital ID in Wallet to potentially all Americans, regardless of state.
It doesn’t work like that. You tap a reader, iOS tells you what information is being transferred, and you authenticate (FaceID, TouchID). Then they see your details on their end. Unlike your DL/passport, your iPhone never leaves your hands.
Detailed description is here: Use your Digital ID in Apple Wallet - Apple Support https://support.apple.com/en-us/123719
If I have to carry my driver’s license whenever I leave the house in the car—which includes getting to an airport for a domestic flight or driving to a liquor store—there’s little benefit to being able to present digital identification in favor of the physical card
Yeah, this seems like a technology whose time has not yet come. At some point, this will be useful, I’m sure. Most days, I don’t drive (or fly, or buy alcohol, for that matter) and so I can leave my wallet at home. One less thing to worry about. Maybe in five years, that will be almost every day.
I’ve had my virtual driver’s license on my phone for years now and haven’t used it once.
I just like having everything in one place although I’ll be in big trouble if I lose my phone.
But when I pick up one of my prescriptions at Costco, I still have to show them the real driver’s license even though they’ve known me for years. They wouldn’t even accept the photocopy of the license on my phone.
I have both the California Driver’s Licence and new Digital ID on my iPhone. When I loaded them, I tried to also have them load to my Apple Watch 10. I’ve had no success doing that. In Watch Wallet settings, they both show up as items from the phone to be added, but after going through the photo verification, they still claim the need to verify them.
Apple Support provided no direct resolution and recommended the expected next step of unpairing and then re-pairing the Apple Watch and trying again.
Has anyone successfully gotten the Digital IDs on their Apple Watch? Has anyone needed to go through the re-pair cycle to do it? Has anyone gone through the re-pair cycle and still had it not work?
I’ve been digging more into how Digital ID works. Apple says: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/data/en/identity/
Your identity card images are encrypted on device and sent to your government issuing authority, which may share them with their third-party identity verification service provider; Apple does not see or store images of your identity card.
That’s for state-issued identity cards. So far I haven’t found any information about how passports are verified. If a third-party service is used, I’m unlikely to add my passport to Wallet. If a third-party service is used and it is the provider used by the IRS, ID.me, I won’t be using Digital ID.
Why? As somebody interested in startups, small to medium sized companies, venture capital, private equity, and watching distressed companies, I don’t want to trust unregulated third-parties with sensitive identity information if I can avoid it. Bankruptcies, mergers, and cost cutting are almost always bad for privacy and security. And specifically, I think ID.me has shown itself to be untrustworthy.
I’ll join @ace https://talk.tidbits.com/u/ace, in the TSA queue next time and see if this works (with my CA D/L in my pocket, just in case). Speaking of my driver’s license, I had previously stored it in Wallet, but when I looked for it while creating my Digital ID (not a requirement of the process, I was just curious), it was gone! To be fair, I did get a new phone recently, so perhaps that’s another item that doesn’t survive the migration process. I added it back in, and Apple has now added all the live photo and facial movement steps required by Digital ID to the driver’s license process too (at least for CA).
And regarding the usefulness of having your d/l in Wallet, I actually have used it a couple times. Those requesting my d/l seemed completely baffled by me showing it to them from Wallet (I didn’t have the actual card on my person at the time), but when I showed them all the information on the information screen, they were satisfied. Maybe just lucky, I guess.
My My Number Card is in my Wallet. After reading your article, I opened it up and confirmed it was there and “ready to use” and I could see my photo and ID, etc.
But even after clicking their “i” icon for more information, I have no idea how to make use of the digital My Number card.
I use my physical My Number card regularly. As of late, it has replaced national health insurance cards, so I use it at hospitals and doctors’ office. But I don’t see any way of using my digital My Number card there. I wonder if that is somehow possible.
For TSA, they need to keep investing in the touchless tech (where you just take a photo and the agent gets you identify and flight information all in one picture. Fastest and simplest and no stumbling around on your phone
Got mine added! Now I already have my Enhanced Driver License which is proof of US Citizenship but having this is also a bonus so when I fly domestically I don't have to pull my wallet out hopefully.
Every.single.time I tap on add Digital ID I see a spinning icon and it never proceeds to the next step. I live in the USA. This should work but it does not.
Successfully added to my phone, but it won’t add to my Apple Watch.
I keep going to the verification step. It will then say verification pending. After a minute or so it goes back to verification required. It has me go through all the steps again. I’m stuck in a loop.
Mine also added to my iPhone easily, but not to my Watch. When I go to the Watch app on the iPhone and tell it to add that card, it just says “Unable to connect to Wallet Services. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.” (Which I am.)
I figured it out... my issue is, I am running an Apple Watch SE2, and you have to have a Series 6 or later. I've been eyeing a new watch, so maybe this might be it.
I added it. I assume because it doesn’t have a picture or any other identifying information, it only works with NFC. Does TSA have the NFC equipment to read it ?
Yeah this and the state IDs are NFC. There’s a video on the screen on how to use it. A lot of airports support NFC now, but as far as I know, there’s no definitive list.
Here is the video straight from Apple at the bottom of the page: https://learn.wallet.apple/id
It should also be noted that you only need to tap once at the start of the scanning process. Once you authenticate the information you'll be sharing, the machine will receive your ID information via BLE.
I’m to do what now? I have seen videos, I mean I heard of these videos and from what I understand they ask the same thing? I am registering my passport; right?
Does anybody know if Orlando (MCO) airport currently accepts Digital License/ID I know Florida doesn’t have Digital License/ID at the moment but was wondering if for example your from another state that does have Digital License/ID does MCO currently accept them?
I’m curious how the data is handled. Does Apple have access to all the data in your passport after doing this, or is it locally stored? How is it transmitted?
Your driver's license or ID data are encrypted. Neither the issuing authority nor Apple can see when and where you use your license or ID.
https://imgur.com/a/9W1ugOk
Also, this is how it looks when used. Tells you what was sent/requested. In the future when you use it for buying 21+ things, I’m assuming it’ll only be things like age/birth date that is sent to the cashier/other person/etc.
If that’s the case, how is the initial photo taken of your face when adding the passport processed? Seems like it would be unlikely for it to be compared to the ID locally on device?
Same experience. Passport has the chip logo on the front. Can kind of see a little square imprint section on the back where it’s suggesting to scan. Not working.
I know NFC has worked for adding credit cards to the wallet on this phone.
— edit: Got it to work, had to hold the passport on top of the screen and push it firmly into my screen for about 5 seconds for it to read the chip.
The winds are changing in the digital world. More and more governments are requiring ID or age verification for online services. This is going to be useful in the next year or two. I really hope it will remove App Store requirements for the constant warnings about NSFW subreddits. My age is now verifiable to any app. If an app wants my full name or citizenship then I’ll probably decline and deal with whatever issues.
Anyone know if this works for Passport Cards as well as Passport Books?
Edit: it does not unfortunately. It’ll scan the back of the Passport Card fine, but cannot read the chip inside the Card. So, can’t be added. That blows. Guess I’ll wait until Arkansas adds support for Apple Wallet next year!
Let's go! Super excited to try this on my next flight. Now, MA (among many other states) needs to do their state ID too. At least there's active legislation in progress for this.
I had this error and I tried again a few hours later and it had me do all of these head movements I guess to confirm that I wasn’t an imposter?
It did give me a “verification is processing” for several minutes after I was done and alerted me when my passport was finally added to the wallet. I guess they’re using humans to verify some of us? Idk
I have exactly the same problem. It won't let me add it. It tells me verification error after a few minutes verifying. Does anyone know how to solve it?
I have the same issue trying to add my passport. It's driving me crazy. My passport pic is 2 months old so I know I look exactly the same as the passport pic etc.
OK not the only one crazy. The press release makes it look like you could use your Drivers ID for this same services but I don't see that option (I don't live in a state that Digital ID is supported)
I don’t know 🤷, maybe something to do with the Secure Enclave or I thought that they were gonna follow the process of only one ID no matter the type
Who wants to potentially hand their phone to someone else? Maybe you just scan and don’t need to hand it over, but between phone security and the risk of it being dropped, I see no reason to use this.
The MyColorado app is convenient but I hope they soon allow us to use the wallet app. I just want one source to open. And it would be nice since I don’t need to login and use WiFi in order to present my id like I do with the app
I have had a couple of businesses use the ID in the wallet as age verification. One guy said if it is good enough for the TSA, it is good enough for me.
I have been trying to use it since day 1 and literally no one does anything with it and most don’t even know about it when I whip it out.
What needs to happen, and I suspect what Apple originally intended, was the POS terminals be setup where you could use your wallet like an Apple Pay transaction where you just transmit your info over the terminal. Exactly like Apple Pay. But that hasn’t happened yet.
I think businesses are waiting for all 50 states to be supported before they do such a thing, especially for the national brands that only update their POSs once every few years.
Some POS are doing it like Panera and Jimmy Johns where if you use Apple Pay, it will detect your member card if it's in there too. Hope to see that as well with Digital ID.
When you open your Digital ID, what information is displayed? Also, does it display the passport photo or the selfie that you took during onboarding? Thanks.
When you just open it up it looks like the image in the article with given names and last initial. If you go in the Wallet app and select it and tap the info icon and then tap Physical Passport Information, then you see your passport photo, number, etc. Your verification selfie isn't saved.
But I think they would still be more limited than a physical passport. Maybe for land and sea travel like my Enhanced Driver License which lets me travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and a handful of Caribbean countries by land or sea. I just think the passport book is gonna be required. Maybe select Western European countries will allow a digital version and/or an Enhanced Driver License but I cant imagine 3rd world countries being set up/provisioned for this type of thing.
Got mine added! Verified in under a minute. Had to smile, turn left, and close my eyes for the verification pictures 😂 is my global entry / pre check tied to my passport? I undertook it’s not a replacement for either physical forms, but can I jump into the pre check lane lets say, and use my digital ID?
PreCheck is always tied to your boarding pass, not your ID. If your KTN was used when you booked the flight and the boarding pass was issued with PreCheck, you can use this ID in the PreCheck line just the same as you could have used your passport or driver's license before.
In terms of TSA identity verification, what’s the difference between Apple’s new Digital ID and the mobile driver’s license already supported in Apple Wallet?
Nothing, except that it now opens the feature up to the majority of Americans rather than only those who have a Real ID compliant state-issued ID and live in the limited number of states that support mobile IDs.
One major difference is that this is issued by Apple, while the digital ids are issued (backed) by the actual state. This is more so an attempt by Google (they rolled one out a while back) and Apple to increase adoption of digital ID for states that have not gotten on board.
FWIW that is largely a difference in how passports vs state IDs are issued- because there is no database of all passport holders to verify against, modern passport standards allow for the NFC scan of the passport chip to function as the ‘database’ you are verifying the photo page against.
The actual process of provisioning the ID is an international standard and more or less identically regardless of the document.
I just added it. The whole process took about a minute. I took a picture of the passport, read the chip in the back, and then took a selfie. Then I had to keep recording myself making movements. I had to open my mouth, then turn my head to the right, and then close my eyes, with a vibration validating each one had been captured. My driver license is not Real ID compliant and I'll still be bringing my Nexus card to the TSA line, but I think I'll give this a try next time.
It took a little bit to recognize the photo of my passport. I had to try some different angles, lighting, and background. Once it took the first picture, though, the rest was seamless.
Haven’t had a chance to add it yet, but cool! Yeah, I’ve been using my state ID and it’s been amazing. Seems like a lot more TSA agents know what it is now, vs just a year back.
LOL I remember the first time I tried using it at the airport.
It was around January-February 2025 in Puerto Rico, and the TSA officer insisted it wouldn’t work. He said he didn’t know what I was talking about and that I needed my physical driver license.
But I went ahead and used my Puerto Rico digital driver’s license in Apple Wallet, just like TSA announced later that year, and the look on his face was priceless. He was completely confused, like “what just happened?” 😂
One time, flying out of MSY, I had the same experience.
The next time, I used my digital ID confidently, even though the TSO said it probably wouldn’t work. It crashed their system. People behind me were upset. The TSO had to move to a different computer.
Next time? You bet I used the digital ID again. If not for early adopters, who’s gonna educate the rest of the population?
That’s good to hear. I’ve been scared to use it ever since a TSA agent in Vegas — one of the digital ID sites — shouted “you hand me your ID!” last year.
Yeah, it's weird because they got the machines but I don't think they were trained last year.
Something similar happened to me in Philadelphia as well. I used it and it went through (it popped under the ID in apple wallet), but they made me hand over my ID anyway, lol.
Glad they rolled this out! Looks like it was a server side switch. Hopefully, this increases adoption/user awareness on the customer and the TSA side. That being said, I’ve been using my state ID at more airports and as of late, it’s been accepted everywhere (TSA knows what it is).
Hell, at this point citizenship means nothing to this administration anyway.

I’m not seeing the ID option. Just the list of state drivers licenses and Japan ID. Is there a phone update? Is this new for 26.1?
ReplyDeleteThe winds are changing in the digital world.
DeleteJust did mine. Took 3 minutes verification time included. where do we use this?
ReplyDeleteNYS?
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if this works for Passport Cards as well as Passport Books?
ReplyDeleteEdit: it does not unfortunately. It’ll scan the back of the Passport Card fine, but cannot read the chip inside the Card. So, can’t be added. That blows. Guess I’ll wait until Arkansas adds support for Apple Wallet next year!
it does not work for passport cards. the setup process requires you to scan something that's only available in passport books.
DeleteI had low hopes, but not none. Thanks for verifying, I wasn’t at home to test 🥲
DeleteLet's go! Super excited to try this on my next flight. Now, MA (among many other states) needs to do their state ID too. At least there's active legislation in progress for this.

Word!!!
ReplyDeleteCan you use this if you get stop by ice?
ReplyDeleteI keep trying to add via my US Passport...do all the things..they "Cannot Verify Digital ID" -- any ideas?
ReplyDelete
DeleteI had this error and I tried again a few hours later and it had me do all of these head movements I guess to confirm that I wasn’t an imposter?
It did give me a “verification is processing” for several minutes after I was done and alerted me when my passport was finally added to the wallet. I guess they’re using humans to verify some of us? Idk
I have exactly the same problem. It won't let me add it. It tells me verification error after a few minutes verifying. Does anyone know how to solve it?
DeleteI have the same issue trying to add my passport. It's driving me crazy. My passport pic is 2 months old so I know I look exactly the same as the passport pic etc.
DeleteOK not the only one crazy. The press release makes it look like you could use your Drivers ID for this same services but I don't see that option (I don't live in a state that Digital ID is supported)
DeleteAND my Passport Photo looks like a bank robber....
DeleteNow I need to get off my ass and get one
ReplyDeleteMy app is not showing the option yet! Weird
ReplyDeleteI had to force close the app to get it to show up.
Deletehttps://imgur.com/a/blSjgur
ReplyDeleteDidn’t even take 1 minute
Edit: Also surprised they allow both since you can’t add two state IDs (logical).
If you understand the logic for not allowing multiple states why are you surprised you can also add a passport?
DeleteI don’t know 🤷, maybe something to do with the Secure Enclave or I thought that they were gonna follow the process of only one ID no matter the type
Delete…why?
DeleteWho wants to potentially hand their phone to someone else? Maybe you just scan and don’t need to hand it over, but between phone security and the risk of it being dropped, I see no reason to use this.
ReplyDeleteYou don't hand it to anyone. There's a reader that faces you that you tap your watch or phone on.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
DeleteUse your Watch then?
DeleteI have my digital ID in Arizona but I’ve never been able to use it for anything
ReplyDeleteAt the moment it’s mostly for TSA at airports
DeleteI wonder if https://dmv.colorado.gov/applewallet will still be used or incorporated.
ReplyDeleteWe have MyColorado app for other issues as well
The MyColorado app is convenient but I hope they soon allow us to use the wallet app. I just want one source to open. And it would be nice since I don’t need to login and use WiFi in order to present my id like I do with the app
DeleteI have had a couple of businesses use the ID in the wallet as age verification. One guy said if it is good enough for the TSA, it is good enough for me.
DeleteI have been trying to use it since day 1 and literally no one does anything with it and most don’t even know about it when I whip it out.
DeleteWhat needs to happen, and I suspect what Apple originally intended, was the POS terminals be setup where you could use your wallet like an Apple Pay transaction where you just transmit your info over the terminal. Exactly like Apple Pay. But that hasn’t happened yet.
I think businesses are waiting for all 50 states to be supported before they do such a thing, especially for the national brands that only update their POSs once every few years.
DeleteSome POS are doing it like Panera and Jimmy Johns where if you use Apple Pay, it will detect your member card if it's in there too. Hope to see that as well with Digital ID.
DeleteWhen you open your Digital ID, what information is displayed? Also, does it display the passport photo or the selfie that you took during onboarding? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhen you just open it up it looks like the image in the article with given names and last initial. If you go in the Wallet app and select it and tap the info icon and then tap Physical Passport Information, then you see your passport photo, number, etc. Your verification selfie isn't saved.
DeleteI see. Thank you.
DeleteHope it comes to canada soon
ReplyDeleteWorldwide 2050 🥲
ReplyDeleteExcept it's still not widely accepted. Not sure if that will ever change.
ReplyDeleteThat is how Apple Pay started...
DeleteIt was mainly upto business, this is really government needs to get much more involved which will slow everything.
DeleteThe article says it’ll be a trial at 250 airports in the US. That’s quite a lot I feel like
DeleteI think this is apples attempt to make it more accepted. Instead of waiting on all 50 states one by one
DeleteI’d imagine it very unlikely for digital passports to not be widely accepted say 20 years from now.
DeleteBut I think they would still be more limited than a physical passport.
DeleteThis would be great for the rest of the world
ReplyDeleteGot mine added! Verified in under a minute. Had to smile, turn left, and close my eyes for the verification pictures 😂 is my global entry / pre check tied to my passport? I undertook it’s not a replacement for either physical forms, but can I jump into the pre check lane lets say, and use my digital ID?
ReplyDeletePreCheck is always tied to your boarding pass, not your ID. If your KTN was used when you booked the flight and the boarding pass was issued with PreCheck, you can use this ID in the PreCheck line just the same as you could have used your passport or driver's license before.
Delete"is my global entry / pre check tied to my passport?"
DeleteGlobal Entry is linked to your passport, but this is not a digital passport.
"can I jump into the pre check lane lets say, and use my digital ID?"
PreCheck is tied to the person, not any specific ID. You can use any TSA-accepted ID in the PreCheck lane.
In terms of TSA identity verification, what’s the difference between Apple’s new Digital ID and the mobile driver’s license already supported in Apple Wallet?
ReplyDeleteCa mobile id is at sfo and lax, out of the entire us
DeleteThis is at 250 airports
I guess it also works with a passport
DeleteIf your state ID is Real ID compliant, no real difference.
DeleteIf it isn't, then use this instead.
Nothing, except that it now opens the feature up to the majority of Americans rather than only those who have a Real ID compliant state-issued ID and live in the limited number of states that support mobile IDs.
DeleteOne major difference is that this is issued by Apple, while the digital ids are issued (backed) by the actual state. This is more so an attempt by Google (they rolled one out a while back) and Apple to increase adoption of digital ID for states that have not gotten on board.
DeleteFWIW that is largely a difference in how passports vs state IDs are issued- because there is no database of all passport holders to verify against, modern passport standards allow for the NFC scan of the passport chip to function as the ‘database’ you are verifying the photo page against.
DeleteThe actual process of provisioning the ID is an international standard and more or less identically regardless of the document.
ReplyDeleteIt took a little bit to recognize the photo of my passport. I had to try some different angles, lighting, and background. Once it took the first picture, though, the rest was seamless.
DeleteWhen it told you to run your head to the right, did it also ask you to cough?
DeleteI've tried it 5 times and I look exactly as I do on my passport pic as it was only taken 2 months ago.
DeleteIt fails every time once it goes off for the validation piece after the selfie and movement section. I have no idea why.
Seems to have a problem with lights vs natural lighting - wish it would catch this better and suggest changes
DeleteFor me it failed numerous times inside the house with lights on. Once I stepped outside and did the process, it worked
DeleteSame here ended up doing it outside against the wall of my house - seems lighting that isn't natural and backgrounds have an issue with it
Deletetry better lighting
DeleteHaven’t had a chance to add it yet, but cool! Yeah, I’ve been using my state ID and it’s been amazing. Seems like a lot more TSA agents know what it is now, vs just a year back.
DeleteLOL I remember the first time I tried using it at the airport.
DeleteIt was around January-February 2025 in Puerto Rico, and the TSA officer insisted it wouldn’t work.
DeleteThe next time, I used my digital ID confidently, even though the TSO said it probably wouldn’t work. It crashed their system. People behind me were upset. The TSO had to move to a different computer.
Next time? You bet I used the digital ID again. If not for early adopters, who’s gonna educate the rest of the population?
Lol! That sounds about right. It’s like a direct parallel to the Apple Pay rollout many years ago.
DeleteLOL back in 2016, I was at a KFC in Georgia and asked if I could pay with Apple Pay but the cashier kept insisting they didn’t have any Apple Pie.
DeleteAbout two minutes later, the manager walked over and explained to her that I meant a method of payment, not an apple pie.
They have Apple Pie at KFC‽
DeleteApparently not
DeleteThat’s good to hear. I’ve been scared to use it ever since a TSA agent in Vegas — one of the digital ID sites — shouted “you hand me your ID!” last year.
DeleteYeah, it's weird because they got the machines but I don't think they were trained last year.
DeleteSomething similar happened to me in Philadelphia as well.
ReplyDeleteIm a TSO and everyone has or is getting trained on mobile ids
DeleteHeh, just in time for touchless, which I used twice last week.
DeleteThat’s good to hear, I’m flying soon and was thinking about how it would be awkward to try to do it and the TSO not knowing what I was talking about
DeleteGood to hear!
