If all the people ripping on Chalamet went to the opera or ballet even once a year, none of those places would ever have to beg for money. Based on the list, it's likely none of them have season tickets to anything that has a violin in it.

Yes, because young actors regularly win Best Actor. Gimme a break. The piling on for Timothy is just what would happen anyways. Older actors just do not reward other male actors until they are well into their 40s or older. Very few winners in their 20’s and 30’s. Well-regarded performances from Brando (Streetcar), Clift (Red River, Here to Eternity) James Dean, DiCaprio, and now Chalamet are shot down in favor of the veteran actor.
But for Best Actress, they’ll take them young and hot no problem.
Of course the foot in mouth incident is a no no, but he already had his good looks, celebrity, and a tacky Kardashian on his arm, which I think was already enuf. But he is talented and would be a worthy winner due to his abilities.

Wtf was the academy smoking?! Krokodil?!) Sean Penn and Benico Del Toro completely stole the show from the rest of the cast and the movie. Epic acting! (Sean Penn knew the assignment: if you want an Oscar have the most weirdest and insanely scary haircut ever made! That’s why bad dude from No Country for Old Men and Weapons lady won) Leo just wandered around doing his best Marky Mark angry and confused impression. Huh? What?! Wait. Where?! Huh?! What am I?! Lol Marky mark! I thought that older chick from Sinners should’ve won best supporting actress. Weapons sucked and was a terrible movie. The end scene was fun though! It was as bad as hereditary. No, sir, I didn’t like it, sez me and Mr Horse.
Timothee’s performance was predictable, his accent was uneven and anachronistic. Nothing about his performance was indicative of careful preparation nor respectful of craft.

I saw an interview and read an article that said that Timothee Chalamet would not win anything due to his remarks about the ballet... I mean personally, I wouldn't immediately disregard any of the plethora in possibilities... but I do still wonder. Could he have really missed out on several well deserved awards.
It truly takes me back to when I participated in "beauty pageants" as a child/little girl... and I won 3 first place awards which sent me to the "finals" and I won third place. A year later after I got the trophies and made appearances... my mom finally felt so guilty she ended up telling me the reason that I won third bc the top 3 girls had to do some kind of last minute competition to see who could sell the most tickets in 72 hrs which would then see who sold the most. That's how the beauty pageants queen got her crown. Lol
Didn't do the New yorker's accent, For starters this could be one of the reasons. Not to mention Michael's performance in Sinners was also great, he had portrayed not just 1 but 2 great characters so that is tough to beat.
Because someone else gave a stronger performance? People can now stop pretending he’s a young Day-Lewis or DiCaprio. This guy is a fine actor, but most of the momentum was just hype and marketing.
Perhaps he didn't win because he's not really that good of an actor. Just because he's the current heartthrob (and honestly, I can't fathom why) doesn't equal competence as an actor.
Nobody's mentioning the elephant in the room. Maybe the HW royalty mucky mucks found it inappropriate for their 'best actor' to be cavorting with a Kardashian blow-up doll. The two of them have put on quite the spectacle these last few months. If he thought that associating with the Kardashians would result in more popularity and respect, then he really is as stupid as he looks.
The BAFTA episode boosted Sinners' campaign, but not enough to overthrow OBAA, who already had many victories secured. MBJ came out on top in the whole thing as Chalamet arrived weakened by a negative campaign after that "being among the greats" speech and appearing "desperate" to win (before the Opera fall down). In contrast, for example, Amy Madigan, Sean Penn or PTA of course were never weakened, and that's why the rest of Sinners cast couldn't take advantage of the Tourette's guy fiasco.
He's not a good actor. At least not in the same prestige as some of the other actors nominated; I feel like he shouldn't have even been nominated, but that's my opinion. I also think he is way over hyped because of the fact that he's young, tall, and slim, with a teenager face and Gen Z attitude. I've never found his performances particularly moving.
I honestly think one of the main reasons he lost was because the voters didn't vibe at all with the film or character itself. I remember reading an anonymous ballot where a voter said within the first ten minutes they found it unbearable to watch because it was too loud and irritating so they watched the rest of the film on mute. If the majority of industry voters had a similar experience with the film than Timothée's chances were way lower than expected.
The real ones know that there are rumors of him being a dick in hollywood for a long time. Rumors that have been there from the start of his career. I just think the public is catching up to his true personality now.
Either way, I don't think the ballet/opera comments had any impact. But I think it was just a matter of his performance just wasn't that good. Comparing it to the other performances nominated, he was just OK.

ReplyDeleteI saw an interview and read an article that said that Timothee Chalamet would not win anything due to his remarks about the ballet... I mean personally, I wouldn't immediately disregard any of the plethora in possibilities... but I do still wonder. Could he have really missed out on several well deserved awards.
ReplyDeleteIt truly takes me back to when I participated in "beauty pageants" as a child/little girl... and I won 3 first place awards which sent me to the "finals" and I won third place. A year later after I got the trophies and made appearances... my mom finally felt so guilty she ended up telling me the reason that I won third bc the top 3 girls had to do some kind of last minute competition to see who could sell the most tickets in 72 hrs which would then see who sold the most. That's how the beauty pageants queen got her crown. Lol
Didn't do the New yorker's accent, For starters this could be one of the reasons. Not to mention Michael's performance in Sinners was also great, he had portrayed not just 1 but 2 great characters so that is tough to beat.

ReplyDeleteBecause someone else gave a stronger performance? People can now stop pretending he’s a young Day-Lewis or DiCaprio. This guy is a fine actor, but most of the momentum was just hype and marketing.

The two of them have put on quite the spectacle these last few months. If he thought that associating with the Kardashians would result in more popularity and respect, then he really is as stupid as he looks.
ReplyDeleteThe BAFTA episode boosted Sinners' campaign, but not enough to overthrow OBAA, who already had many victories secured. MBJ came out on top in the whole thing as Chalamet arrived weakened by a negative campaign after that "being among the greats" speech and appearing "desperate" to win (before the Opera fall down). In contrast, for example, Amy Madigan, Sean Penn or PTA of course were never weakened, and that's why the rest of Sinners cast couldn't take advantage of the Tourette's guy fiasco.

ReplyDeleteHe's not a good actor. At least not in the same prestige as some of the other actors nominated; I feel like he shouldn't have even been nominated, but that's my opinion. I also think he is way over hyped because of the fact that he's young, tall, and slim, with a teenager face and Gen Z attitude. I've never found his performances particularly moving.

DeleteI honestly think one of the main reasons he lost was because the voters didn't vibe at all with the film or character itself. I remember reading an anonymous ballot where a voter said within the first ten minutes they found it unbearable to watch because it was too loud and irritating so they watched the rest of the film on mute. If the majority of industry voters had a similar experience with the film than Timothée's chances were way lower than expected.

I think the most annoying thing about this though is the way people are using this as “evidence” to confirm their priors when it absolutely doesn’t. We have no idea who was 2nd, 3rd, 4th or whatever else. We have no idea why people voted the way they did. End of story.
I definitely think the political climate was a factor as well.
I was gaslit when I said his campaign and this new persona was annoying and would rub people the wrong way. The industry was just not on board.

But what did affect him was his overall campaign being way too cocky, someone on his PR team should’ve told him to cool it. Bc as an actor (especially a white male) you do war crimes, drugs, domestic violence, sexual assault and you still win an Oscar bc academy voters don’t gaf, but the one thing they hate is arrogance 😭 Jessie Buckley and Amy Madison there is no way they didn’t know they were gonna be oscar winners yet they both still looked flummoxed and shocked they won lol, Buckley even cried like the academy approves of actors looking grateful for the Oscar not entitled to it, bc that’s a turn off.

Almost every top athlete says they're the best at what they do, or at least try and believe it. My point was I think the backlash towards his behavior or comments are completely dramatic, and it’s stupid that nothing statements and sports-like competitiveness were even weighed against him to begin with. ReplyDeleteI still haven't watched Marty Supreme yet, but watched One Battle after Another and Sinners in theaters and while they were both good movies, I don't think either one was great and didn't think either were Oscar-worthy performances. MBJ just seemed to be playing himself. Even just watching the trailers for Marty Supreme, it was obvious it was designed to be his Oscar-bait movie as they call them

I’m not a fan of the Kardashians, but I do think blaming Kylie is silly. The problem is his attitude and vibe, not the girlfriend.
Also, I believe his desperation might backfire, and now the industry will only reward him a long time from now, similar to what they did with Al Pacino, DiCaprio, and Gary Oldman.
My bet is that Chalamet will have to grind for years and “kiss the ring,” so to speak, to win. He’ll have to earn it.
