AOC shares thoughts on 'OK Boomer' while campaigning with Bernie Sanders

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a congresswoman and proud millennial, knows about the increasing popular burn, "OK Boomer." And honestly? She gets it.

After campaigning alongside 2020 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in Iowa over the weekend, AOC spent some time answering questions on Instagram Live. When a follower asked, "How do you feel about the 'new' response to boomers with 'OK Boomer?'" the New York representative gave an honest and fairly straightforward reply.

Gary Grumbach of NBC News shared a clip from the Instagram Live, in which AOC can be heard saying, "We grow up and we come of age and we realize that previous generations decided to screw over our planet, and create endless wars, and mess up our economy, and create a student loan crisis."

"And when we bring up these things they say well, if you just had less avocado toast you'd be able to afford a mortgage," she went on. "There's only so much of that you hear where you're just like, you know what? We're just going to fix this ourselves."

AOC also touched on the generational memes at an event with Sanders on Saturday, where she told KETV, "I think particularly for young people there's this reality that we acknowledge that we are inheriting generational issues where we kicked the can down the road so long..."

"It almost feels like all of this procrastination was just like using our generation like a credit card to say, 'OK, well you're gonna deal with it,'" she went on.

Though it's clear AOC understands millennial frustrations firsthand, she also thinks that a solution to the problems at hand lies in generations working together.

"What we need to do is push towards a positive and inclusive movement where it is, in fact, intergenerational but progressive, and I think that's where we hope to lead this movement in the future."

"I agree," Sanders said, before calling attention to the age gap between himself and Ocasio-Cortez. "Despite the fact that Alexandria is so much older than I am."

In addition to raising awareness on the importance of tackling climate change and other issues, Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders are showing the world that it's definitely possible for two politicians from different generations to not only co-exist, but to respect and complement each other.

  2. Al Gore, boomer, wrote a book about what was then called “global warming” “An Inconvenient Truth” and was chastised for years by both the left and right for creating a crisis. In a section called "The Politicization of Global Warming", Al Gore stated:

As for why so many people still resist what the facts clearly show, I think, in part, the reason is that the truth about the climate crisis is an inconvenient one that means we are going to have to change the way we live our lives.” He said this in 2006.

  4. Unfortunately, this isn't inclusive of other generations. It's generalizing and agist. I like a lot of what she has to say, but this is why we are gonna lose.

  5. The younger generation who are the most entitled of any generation are envious of the so called boomers wealth and success and power.
Be patient gen y and milleniums.Work hard and save money and build a future like the older generation did.Look within for your failures and make some changes instead of saying ok boomer on social media

  6. No she doesn’t get it! Boomers have been fighting the same battles for fifty years, while she is just getting started. And, by the way, Bernie is a pre-Boomer, having been born during WWII. AOC must realize that every generation must face these challenges, as well as new ones.

    2. fair wages based on what? Experience? Knowledge? Capabilities? Or just because it's not fair that someone with those things gets paid better than those who do not?

  10. "OK Boomer" is just arrogance saying, "I know everything and you know nothing, shut up." It has no place in civil discussion and is the retort of spoiled brat that has nothing else better to say, no real thoughts, no debate points, nothing, not a thoughtful person having discourse. Better would be to engage someone in a real discussion, or to just keep your mouth shut and leave the discussion. Edit: And another thought, wouldn't that be considered "ageism"? Aren't we supposed to avoid the -isms? I think so.

  12. The analysis is too simplistic. Just because these problems are ongoing doesn’t mean boomers were oblivious to the dangers. What generation protested the Vietnam war? What generation created the EPA to protect us & the environment? It’s not like we were in denial! Many of these problems were subverted & their solutions were derailed by the corporations whose sole aim was profit/greed!! It’s exactly what the current administration is doing right now! I take no pleasure in pushing these problems down the road; I want change too! VOTE people!! This current admin is promoting the will of corporations not the people!! Wake Up!!
