The 25-year 'Happy Gilmore' anniversary has sparked a mini Twitter reunion
Dust off those golf clubs, head to the green, but watch out — Shooter McGavin is back, and he eats pieces of shit like you for breakfast.
Tuesday marked the 25-year anniversary of Happy Gilmore, the 1996 Adam Sandler comedy about an angry ice hocker player-turned-golfer who enters a pro tournament to try and make enough money to save his grandmother's house.
To mark the occasion, Sandler — a.k.a. the eponymous Happy Gilmore — shared a Twitter video of himself making his trademark running drive.
"Okay, it's been 25 years since I've done this, let's see what happens," says Sandler, heading over to the tee. "Shooter McGavin, this is for you."
Needless to say, he smashes it.
"You're dead, Shooter," laughs Sandler at the end of the clip — but judging by the response that came in an hour later, Shooter is anything but.
In the video below, actor Christopher McDonald — Sandler's co-star in the movie and Happy's main rival, the arrogant, finger-gun-toutin' golf star Shooter McGavin – addresses the camera in character before sinking his own putt.
"Nice drive, Gilmore," says McDonald as McGavin. "25 years, huh? Let's see if it's, uh, Shooter's tour. Check it out."

Turning the camera around while continuing to whisper that it's "all about the short game," McDonald then tap-tap-taaaaps the ball into an upturned glass. After all, this is golf, not a rock concert.
"Money," he says as he picks up the camera. "Shooter, still got it. Well, thank you to all the fans and thank you to you, Adam Sandler, and uh, why don't you just meet me at the ninth green at nine, Gilmore?"
To be fair to McDonald, he's absolutely nailed that. Maybe later he could just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? He just may. And if there's one thing the massive number of views and retweets on those videos tells us, it's that the appetite for another Happy Vs. Shooter matchup is still very much there.
Is it too late for a Happy Gilmore 2?

Happy Gilmore forever changed the golf driving range industry. Even since the movie came out driving ranges had to put up a sign saying “No Happy Gilmores” under their rules of the range.
ReplyDeleteI literally got told that once!! LMAO

DeleteIdk how many people will agree... but I'd love to see a sequel. I feel like the basic story/plot is already right there. All the main characters and their 'kids'. Hell... Shooter's kid's name could even be 'Gunnar McGavin'. And have the Big Show play Mr. Larson's son.

ReplyDeleteI swear I always thought Ben Stiller was Mike Piazza.
DeleteI don’t have my ticket stub but I saw Happy Gilmore for $1. Obviously it had been out for a few weeks when I saw it but $1 theaters used to be a thing. ;`)
ReplyDeleteWe went to the “nice” dollar movies that were $1.50 in 1996. I saw Happy Gilmore at least twice in that theater.
DeleteI love this so much! And that did sound smashed!
ReplyDeleteDid you see the Shooter response?!?
DeleteNo.. looking for it now.
