Apple announces iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max with new 'Dynamic Island'

The notch is gone.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are here, and they're very different from the regular iPhone 14 models.

The notch on top of the display is gone, replaced by a pill-shaped "Dynamic Island." Apple calls it that because it does more than just sit there. It's an animated thingy that adapts to different activities, showing you notifications and other information about what's happening on your phone. The Dynamic Island is interactive, meaning you can touch it to expand it into a larger bubble with more information.

The sizes are, again, 6.1 and 6.7 inches, though Apple says the bezels have been further reduced. The display is brighter than before, with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.

The Pro models get an entirely new chip, the A16 Bionic, which Apple says offers improved performance while driving less power.

Another major upgrade for the Pro models are the cameras. The main camera now has quad-pixel sensor with a 48-megapixel resolution, a 65% larger sensor than the one on the iPhone 13 Pro.

Apple is using the added resolution for better zoom quality, as well as better quality in the company's ProRAW format. The ultra-wide and telephoto cameras have also been upgraded, though they only go to 12 megapixels. And the new Photonic Engine, the same one we get in the iPhone 14, further improves low-light quality.

Another feature that made it to both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro models is Emergency SOS via Satellite. It gives the iPhone some connectivity in areas where there are no cell towers. You won't be able to use this for much except for SOS messages, but it's a start. Also, all the new iPhones get crash detection, which uses the phone's various sensors to detect whether you've been in a crash.

The iPhone 14 Pro is available in four colors, with the new color being Deep Purple (yes, just like the band).

The 14 Pro starts at $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099. You'll be able to pre-order them on Sept. 9, and they'll be available on Sept.16.

  1. Hopefully those of us with phones that have had a, uh... "Dynamic Island" for years don't have to start calling it that.

  2. I swear they should trynna pay us or stop ✋ using it because their products isn’t cheap.

  3. Dynamic island is basically quicksand

  10. I made a one time error and tried the Galaxy 22 Ultra 5 months ago. Friday morning I will be ordering the new 14 Pro Max and the 49mm Ultra watch. Can't wait to get them both.

  11. To bad for me, I’m from latam and I usually buy the iPhone on the USA… now eSim only

  12. The single thing I cared about was the dynamic island, gotta admit it’s really cool and animations are sleek, however absolutely not worth it to upgrade from a 13 Pro or even a 12 Pro.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Bye notch. And good riddance to ya! Ditto for the mini

    ReplyDelete
  14. My favourite iPhone lineup in years and a stellar keynote to boot. Why aren't we talking about the end of the keynote where it cuts to a woman standing on a subway platform and glitches suspiciously. 🧐

    ReplyDelete
  15. That notch is still ugly but better than what they had

    ReplyDelete
  16. I figured it wouldn’t have usbc but I was hoping they’d have a faster wireless charge. Oh well, I wait for iPhone 15. Love the display peak brightness though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. We all have to say FINALLY what took Apple so long to have always on display, no reasonable excuse. But I have to say it does look nice compared to my android phone.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And no mention of iOS 16?? Or did I have the wrong event for that announcement??

    1. That was announced 3 months ago at WWDC.

    4. They mentioned iOS 16 features throughout the entire keynote, along with watchos 9 as well.

  19. Could they have not done dynamic island on all iPhones with a notch? Seems like a software thing to make the notch/ pill less obvious…

    1. No, it's a sophisticated software/hardware solution, sir.

  20. How to get rid of the eye sore notch the Apple way? Simple, rename it to Dynamic Island (TM) 😆😆😆

    ReplyDelete

    1. the notch is smaller and provides a function instead of just taking space. so its great. it not just a rename.

    2. The issue here is that Bim Bom is here to troll and mock. Like it or not the notch (and now dynamic island) is part of Apple's design language. If they don't like it they can just buy from another company. I, personally, see the technical reason behind the notch and am fine with it. If they can reduce the size, as they have done here, thats great.

      Delete
    3. explain how its just a rename. did you watch the event? or just look at the picture?

      Delete
    4. I surely did. To me it looks like a hole in the screen that expands to even bigger hole in the screen at times.

      Delete
    5. you must have went to sleep when "the hole" was doing things.

    6. Fan boys gonna come for you as they must defend this company

    7. Is the notch going to become a fingerprint magnet?

    8. I think you are the only one amused by your comments.

    9. No he is not ;)

  21. Must admit I was like “is that it?”

The watch is identical to the series 7 but with a temp sensor for women (and a crash detection (news cars in the U.K. have that built in)

Airpods - what about the AirPods max? Surely they are due an upgrade.

The AirPods Pro are just tweaked.

As for the iPhones - apparently we only do photos with them. I mean great camera improvements but literally nothing showcasing the power, no major apps to show it off, no major game to show of the graphical power - imagine if they said “iPhone pro is so powerful that you can now hook up to a monitor and do 4k gaming.

The whole things was meh. And some of the features only America and Canada will get - what about the rest of the world. Apple may be based in the US but they are an international country that doesn’t seem to care anymore about the rest of the world.

    3. Why should they wait to roll out features for years while the EU decides to finally approve something? There's a reason the US and Canada get these things first, and it's not our problem if you are dragging your feet.

    4. Tim, thank you for putting an end to Apple innovation and have a great day, too!

  22. Waiting for the specs to see how much it weighs...

Edit: it got heavier again. Big no for me. Might order a 13 mini before stock gets depleted.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 7.27oz or 8.47oz

      Delete
    2. It changes weight dynamically along with the size of the Dynamic Island (TM).

      Delete
    3. People think you are joking about the weight but the difference between my 13 Pro and my wife's 13 Mini is ridiculous.

      Delete
    4. But barely. From 204g to 206g on the iPhone 14 Pro and the 14 Pro Max stayed the exact same at 240g.

      Delete
    5. Yes I know. But I found the 13 Pro too heavy already. Looks like they'll continue this trend meaning the 15 Pro will be a no for me too.

      Delete
    6. You could always lift some weights.

      Delete
    7. Poor BelgianWaffle got squashed with iPhone 14 Pro weight :)))

      Delete
    8. It's a Belgian pancake now :)

      Delete
    9. According to the figures I'm looking at (204 vs 206 for Pro and 240 vs 240 for Pro Max), there's almost no increase in weight at all. Just get the phone you want.

      Delete
  23. The best joke is.

They didn't update the MagSafe Duo to allow fast charging for the now already year old Series 7 and newer.

    And they raised its price.

    This is professional trolling.

    1. Prices (adjusted for exchange rates) appear to have either remained the same or fallen.

To put some hard numbers to this:

      EURUSD Sept 2021: 1.18, Sept 2022: 1.00, Change -15.25%

      iPhone 13 (Sept 2021), iPhone 14 (Sept 2022)

      US: US$799,US$799

      EU(Germany): US$1060 (899€), US$999 (999€)

      UK: US$942 (£779), US$997 (£867)

The UK price went up a hair ($55) but IIUC Apple is not pricing based on the current value but the expected value over the next year.

  24. They had me at Dynamic Island.

  25. From 1160€ starting price to 1329€. Boom!

    1. Too much. And they even increased prices on their accessories.

    2. Yeah no iPhone for me this year.

      Delete
    3. Are they not finally adjusting for the fall in the value of the Euro? When the iPhone 13 came out EURUSD was 1.18. It is now 1.00. 899 * 1.18 = 1060 so they could have gone higher. They might be basing the price on the predicted value of EURUSD over the next year which is lower than 1.18 but probably not 1.00.

    4. Macrumors says SAME prices for non Pro 14 as 13

  26. The Dynamic Island is pretty cool on the Pro models. The Camera upgrades are nice at best.

The Watch Ultra to me stole the show!!! Maybe my only purchase from today’s announcement.

AirPod Pro’s were meh to me. The volume slide is a welcome addition to the “stalk”.

  27. What I find absolutely shocking is Apple boast about the price staying the same in the US…yet everywhere else the price goes up.

Worse is Apple state how you can save huge with a trade in offer - again only in the US.

Here in the U.K. Apple are offering a measly £230 for the iPhone 12 128gb…even though most other carriers or trade in sites offer £350-£400.

Considering Apple is supposed to be big on recycling and really wants to make sure their products are dealt with properly by finding new homes or recycling you’d think they’d make a much bigger effort outside of the US.

People outside the US buy iPhones - yet it seems Apple does not care and puts prices up and laughs in your face with their trade in offers.

I can get more for my phone with Samsung!!! How is that possible?!?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exchange rates have changed a lot since September 2021. Apple is a US-based company so they are going to base everything off the US dollar. Right now EURUSD is at the lowest point in many years (1.00 vs 1.18 last year). Apple adjusted the price accordingly. GBPUSD is also at a low point (1.15 vs 1.21 a year ago).

      Delete
    2. Absolutely understand that but Europe including the U.K. are also have huge energy crisis that’s causing costs to go up because of a war between Russia and Ukraine.

Rather than Apple taking a step back and thinking - Europe don’t have it great at the mo, rather than have a huge profit margin (especially when we pay very little tax there) we’ll leave prices as they are.

Still doesn’t explain why many trade in companies can offer almost double what Apple can offer or why Samsung can even offer more for an iPhone.

Apple care less about the world outside of US.

      Delete
    3. Oh, I agree about the trade-in prices. Many times Apple is one of the worst but you can trade it in elsewhere and it will either be recycled, refurbished, or sold used. Not ideal and Apple absolutely needs to do better there.

I find it a bit amazing that the US price stayed the same despite high inflation due to Russia, the pandemic, and other factors.

      Delete
    4. Despite what Europeans seem to believe, Apple is under NO obligation to subsidize you just because you happen to be having a tough time right now. If you have issues with the way things are, deal with your politicians and domestic industries instead of asking an American company for a bailout.

  28. I'm really disappointed that they did caring over the Green color from the iPhone 13 Pro. I thought it looked great and was really excited to possibly get one. But I guess I'll settled for one of the other colors. 😐

    ReplyDelete
  29. If you put 13 pro max and 14 pro max side by side and pretend to ignore which one is the newest, it's hard to choose if the notch is an evolution of the pill or viceversa.

Apart from that, confronting the specs and finding the differences is getting harder every year. Besides a better camera and a slight better zoom, you only notice crash detection, always on display and dynamic island.

  30. feels like they are waiting until series 10 of the Apple Watch before any substantial changes
