Netflix is officially eliminating password sharing | Mashable.
It's official: No more password sharing on Netflix
The time we have all been dreading has finally come: Netflix is cracking down on password sharing in the U.S.
Netflix launched paid sharing in four countries — Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal — earlier this year and said in its quarter one earnings report that it is "pleased with the results" and plans a "broad rollout," including in the U.S., this upcoming quarter.
"Paid sharing is another important initiative as widespread account sharing (100M+ households) undermines our ability to invest in and improve Netflix for our paying members, as well as build our business," Netflix's report read.
It noted that the streaming service expects a "cancel reaction" from users when it announces the news, but that users tend to reactivate their accounts.
"For example, in Canada, which we believe is a reliable predictor for the U.S., our paid membership base is now larger than prior to the launch of paid sharing and revenue growth has accelerated and is now growing faster than in the U.S.," the report read.
Netflix originally planned to start eliminating password sharing in the U.S. earlier in the year, but decided to put a hold on the plan as they "found opportunities to improve the experience for members."
Users will be able to add two additional people to their Netflix Standard or Premium plan, but they'll have to pay extra — probably around $6 per person, if the U.S. decision matches the Canadian change.
It's time to reconnect with whoever's Netflix account you're mooching off of — but if we find a way around the newest crackdown, we'll let you know.
More in Apps & Software, Netflix
I pay for 4 accounts $19.99 a month. I use my accounts at my home and our river house. If that’s too much then I’ll gladly cancel. I can’t keep up with all these streaming services and it’ll force me to go back to the days we pirated everything and everything was free.

how will they know your sharing passwords? What if your are traveling?
DeleteI’m wondering the same other than making someone confirm it. But I have 4 accounts so we know each family member can watch without interruption.
Deleteit’s already here in Canada. You get an email alert asking if it is you, with a code to use to log on. No big deal. I’ve used it everywhere, and at my parents’ house also.
Deleteyou mean go back to the days when you were doing something illegal in a different way?
Deletenot doing anything illegal now. But all this streaming services are getting out of control. I already know you can stream but I like my job. I’ll just drop my number of users on my account or quit. There’s enough of them.
Deleteuntil you run out of codes. I moved house and they said I don’t have codes to sign in at the new location…
Deletegreat now I need two-factor auth to watch TV. Smh
Deletebreach of contract is illegal. You a user agreement (contact) that said you are the only one who would be using your account.
DeleteOr if you truly don’t believe it’s illegal, then you’re saying you’ll go back to the good old days of doing things illegal. Either way, you’re going back to stealing movies.
yup we cancelled back a few months ago when this was introduced in Canada. We never password shared but my husband would watch Netflix on his phone at work sometimes, then at our house.... They banned us for using it "out of our WiFi network"... Even tho we were paying for 4 screens. So bye bye
DeleteJust opened my Netflix that I "don't password share on"...

doesn't have to mean password sharing. If you ever go anywhere travelling, or want to watch Netflix on your phone on your own account, that's not in your home wifi network. They will ban you.
DeleteI "share" with my parents and live in a different house. It's already logged in all my TVs and my phone. I also have my own profile on the account. Hopefully I never run into issues because these subscription services are getting expensive.
DeleteI'm in Canada where this was already introduced a few months ago. Hubby and I were paying for 4 screens. We never password shared. We only ever watched at home on our tv, and sometimes he'd watch on his phone while on his lunch break at work. They banned us. They make you set your home wifi every 30 days. If you don't, they ban you. If you do and then you log in anywhere but in that home wifi.. Banned.
DeleteThat's crazy, so inconvenient
DeleteNo more Netflix then
ReplyDeleteay hahahhahaha
ReplyDeleteTrue???

Deletehuhu it's time for indiv acc again te😌 HAHAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteGo F yourself Netflix. your platform blows anyways
ReplyDeleteMashable you should ask Ziff Davis how he feels about content sharing? Or how does Christianna Silva feel about using her articles for free? Can I steal her works? I’m about as liberal as you can get, it absolutely boggles my mind as to why people feel they have the right to free media. You’re promoting stealing.
ReplyDeleteHaha. In Sweden they will not inflict this.
ReplyDeleteThey are doing in country-by-country, I reckon. In New Zealand they introduced the password sharing ban a few months ago. I cancelled it, we have a pretty limited selection of shows on Netflix anyway and Netflix movies are crap, to be honest, but at least it used to be a cheap crap if you share the password with whanau. I paid for Netflix for all, they included my kids in their Spotify Family account. Win-win.
DeleteI'm not gonna pay $25/month for this crap, for sure.
not here. Because how we in Sweden use internet mostly with cellphone we don’t have so much use of home networks. So they can’t implement it here
Deletesorry I missed that. We are friends now
Delete#NETFLIX JUST KEEP GETTING WORSE ATE THEY TRYING TO MAKE IT GO UNDER
ReplyDeleteNo problem. We will gladly cancel. No more shows with random lgbtTrash characters and inappropriate content in literally every show & movie. Thank God.
ReplyDeleteWeeks after my first withdrawal, I'm still receiving profit from Mrs Patricia Henderson, all my family and friends are now involved in trading. Nothing can ever go wrong while investing with Patricia Henderson, because she is absolutely reliable and trustworthy. I suggest you give her a try if you want to make a way in crypto trading. because she's not going anywhere anytime soon. Mrs Patricia has been around for close to three years now and I have not heard anyone give bad remarks about her. Contact her on facebook for more information.

I already canceled so...
ReplyDeleteWah wah wah.
ReplyDeleteNetflix is so expensive the only way to afford it was to share. I think this is a bad move for Netflix.
ReplyDeleteLa burbuja ha pinchado
ReplyDeleteI just want Netflix to fuck off.
ReplyDeletewho cares?
ReplyDeleteSince when did Netflix become relevant?
ReplyDelete"The end of an era."
ReplyDeleteAnd a fresh start for ALL OF US!!!!

ReplyDelete🥂🥂🥂🥂
Don’t worry. Netflix stopped making their own good movies and haven’t really had anything good for a while. Most of those people were dropping Netflix soon anyways. Myself included
ReplyDeleteTrue???
ReplyDeletealready rolled out here in Canada months ago. It is true.
DeleteOld news here in Canada. Canceled as soon as I had to confirm my ip address to log on. Not everyone streams from home. Ip address changes when you work away from home.
ReplyDeleteAll these streaming companies should get together and charge a reasonable charge as a group...It's over the top, ie; cable bill (very expensive) then Hulu, HMO MAX, Netflix, on and on and no...way to expensive!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt noted that the streaming service expects a "cancel reaction" from users when it announces the news, but that users tend to reactivate their accounts........ Aight Bet.
ReplyDeleteSo, fuc... U Netflix with your stiupid, blind policy.
ReplyDeleteWe've entered the part of capitalism where real growth is no longer possible so in order to simulate growth on a balance sheet they have to come up with new (bad faith) ways to extract revenue from consumers.
ReplyDeleteSimply operating a successful business isn't enough. There must be endless growth to appease shareholders. Consumers will become the victims --including paying Netflix customers who will now have to deal with a clunky experience because of endless corporate greed.
No more Netfix
ReplyDeleteThe amount of people who’ll cancel will make it not a smart or sound decision. I know a lot of people who only get it because you can pay for 5 ways. Now? Pffffttt and the content stinks.
ReplyDeleteNooooooooooo
ReplyDeleteIt's okay, I canceled my account a month ago and went over to hulu
ReplyDeleteNetflix viewers are noooooooooooooooo more sharing passwords
ReplyDeletePeople still use Netflix?
ReplyDeleteIt’s official: no more Netflix.
ReplyDeleteTime to cancel Netflix, folks!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like the content most times but to pay that much and not be able to use it at two spots is ridiculous. The app sucks and crashes anyways
ReplyDeleteyou can use it wherever. You just get an email alert with a code to use if it is you. It’s been here in Canada for some months. I’ve watched it everywhere I did before, as have my kids.
