Warner Bros.' summer blockbuster hopeful The Flash saw a disappointing flicker at the box office in its opening weekend, with the the latest DCEU film missing relatively low targets(opens in a new tab).

Beleaguered by deeply underwhelmed reviews, low box office takings from previous DCEU releases Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adamand the many allegations against its lead Ezra Miller,The Flash made $55.1 million(opens in a new tab) at the domestic box office over the weekend, releasing in 4,234 cinemas.

Despite the hotly anticipated return of Michael Keaton as Batman and co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn calling it(opens in a new tab) "probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” The Flash was sitting on a B grade on CinemaScore(opens in a new tab) and a 66 percent Rotten Tomatoes score(opens in a new tab) from critics – though its audience score was considerably higher at 85 percent.

The Flash has little room to run, and there are many elements at play here, best described by Mashable film editor Kristy Puchko in her review:

"It's no secret that Warner Bros. has lost faith in the DCEU," she writes. "They cut off the Zack Snyderverse and installed James Gunn as co-CEO of DC Studios to reimagine the superhero IP. They killed Batgirl for a tax break. Their last two releases, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, underwhelmed at the box office and with critics. And now the studio is hanging their summer hopes on The Flash, a solo film embattled by divided fans and the many allegations against and scandals surrounding star Ezra Miller."

The Flash wasn't the only big budget film to see lower box office figures in its debut weekend. Pixar's $200 million animated rom-com Elemental saw just $29.5 million in takings(opens in a new tab), released in 4,035 cinemas. As Variety points out(opens in a new tab), both The Flash and Elemental set relatively low box office targets: $70 million and $35 million, respectively.

Elemental, however, has received high praise from critics and audiences alike — it's sitting on an A grade on CinemaScore(opens in a new tab) and a 76 percent critic and 92 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes(opens in a new tab). The film goes far beyond its familiar Pixar marketing materials to a resonant, poignant story about the experiences of immigrant families, with a gorgeous love story interwoven throughout.

"From its very first frame, Elemental positions itself as a movie about the immigrant experience, immediately setting itself apart from the criticism that it's 'Zootopia, but with elements,''" Mashable entertainment reporter Belen Edwards writes in her review,

"Director Peter Sohn(opens in a new tab) drew on his own experience as a child of immigrants for the film, and it's in Ember's own personal dilemmas — in turn helped along by her budding relationship with Wade — that Elemental finds its heart."

There were two other newcomers to cinemas that did well, comparatively. Tim Story’s Black horror comedy The Blackening opened in just 1,775 cinemas and made $6 million(opens in a new tab), and Wes Anderson's latest Asteroid City opened in just six cinemas and made $790,000(opens in a new tab) — and that's before its full global release coming up on June 23.

  1. I thought it pretty well hit the feel of a comic book. It didn't take itself too seriously and had good action and acting.

  2. I loved the movie. I laughed all the way through it and then at the end I didn't. It hit me in the feels at the end. I have watched all the DCEU movies and own many of them but to be honest this movie is the best of the bunch. Laughs, seriousness, heart etc. The CGI was my only complaint.

  3. It was a lot. It was entertaining, but Flash was on extra speed! Haha! It was long!!! I’ve never seen the actor, but he played Flash well. That voice was annoying, though.

  7. I feel Ezra Miller the Actor that played the part of the Flash off screen behaviour was strange and drew negative 👎 publicity to the new 🎥. That is why the movie “The Flash” did badly in 🎭 theatres.

    2. If "the fans" liked ZS's take, they would've went to see his movies when they played in cinemas. They didn't, or at least not sufficiently, so WB took a new approach to this IP. It's not that difficult.

    6. Possible, but not really relevant. They both performed insufficiently in order for WB to retain ZS's services, so they took a new approach.

    7. remember that he left in production to deal with a family tragedy & WB brought in Joss Whedon to finish it. That final product sucked. Had we gotten ZS's vision, the numbers may have been better & viewed as a better project overall. We didn't get to see ZS cut until years later after the verdict was in.

      Delete
    8. Yes and had the ZS series been a huge hit, I’m sure WB would have continued his universe. It did ok but nothing more.

I see you like ZS and his DCEU, but it’s all down to box office numbers - if it doesn’t perform, it’ll be replaced with something that the studio thinks has a better chance.

    9. I liked it well enough, but it had issues. Casting wasn't one of them. They rushed into it, from MoS to BvS (which was a hard miss, except for introducing WW) to JL. I do think JL got a raw deal. And Flash really didn't serve a purpose here without a broader universe to set up.

I'm open to the next iteration DCU as well. Just concerned that by the time that comes out, the superhero genre will be burning out. And the cinema game is changing so quickly the numbers may not make sense again outside of really exceptional films.

  12. The movie, as standalone, was good.
But you know you’re disappointed still, because of knowing the fact that it reboots DC, and Henry Cavill is not returning as Superman.

  43. How bout that almost two and a half hour runtime? Why do the studios continue to produce movies audiences can barely sit through without an intermission? Your typical tv broadcast movie used to come in at two hours with commercials breaks. If you saw it without the commercials it was usually an hour and forty minutes long. Today’s studio blockbusters are all OVER two hours long.

Let’s look at the latest releases.

John Wick 4: Runtime 2 hours 49 minutes.

Avatar 2: Runtime 3 hours and 12 minutes.

Creed 3: Runtime 1 hour and 56 minutes (nearly 2 hours)

Justice League (Zack Snyder cut): 4 hours and 2 minutes.

The Flash: Runtime 2 hours and 24 minutes.

Man of Steel: 2 hours and 23 minutes.

So is it any wonder a lot of fans tend to wait for these movies to be released on streaming and other home video before watching them?

It used to be that if a movie was going to be longer than the usual runtime they would insert an intermission for the audience. Now-a days no one even knows that word anymore. I’m a lifelong movie buff, but I started seeing a trend years ago with the Mavel movies, particularly The Avengers franchise, of the studios continually releasing movies with plus two hour runtimes.

Fans are getting fatigued and will consider the runtime of a movie before buying a ticket. Used to be you could fit in two matinee showings in three hours. Now three hours is nearly the average length of these so-called blockbusters. Those same two matinee showings could take you nearly all of your afternoon just being at the theater. It’s beyond ridiculous.

So I suspect that it’s not necessarily the movies, because these are all big budget flicks with high production values and all star casting. It’s audiences who are looking at the movie runtimes on the marquees, and their watches, and asking themselves if it’s really worth giving up the time to see a nearly three hour movie, when they can go see another movie with a decent runtime instead?

The Little Mermaid: Runtime 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Hmmm? What do you think? By the way, Little Mermaid grossed $163 million dollars it’s opening weekend. While The Flash barely pulled in a third of that at $55 million on it’s opening weekend.

Missed opportunity for that character 🙁 And of course not even repeating the Grant Gustin cameo was another missed opportunity.
