Elon Musk's X/Twitter is letting paying users hide their blue ticks

The memes must be getting too much.

Back when blue ticks on Twitter were something you had to apply for, they were a fairly sought after feature. Then Elon Musk took over, made users pay $8 to get one, and they became a frequent target of memes.

The situation has apparently become so grim that X has now rolled out a previously leaked feature that allows paid subscribers to hide their verification badge from other users.

A screenshot from X's help page, with the sub-heading "Hide your checkmark"
Credit: help.twitter.com

"As a subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account," reads the feature's description in the Help Center. "The checkmark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places and some features could still reveal you have an active subscription. Some features may not be available while your checkmark is hidden. We will continue to evolve this feature to make it better for you."

For subscribers to Twitter Blue, the "Hide your blue checkmark" option is visible in the "Profile customization" page in your Account Settings.

Given that Musk was initially selling the idea of a blue check as bringing "power to the people", it feels a little ironic that he's now rolled out an option to hide the very thing he was suggesting people give him money for. Then again, with ad revenue 50 percent downabrupt brand overhauls and the ongoing lack of clarity over account suspensions and reinstatements, maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

  2. Your understanding of and relationship with Elon Musk is zero to nothing for most of you posting here. Your virtual perception of him is all painted through the aggressive media portrayal of him and the clever journalistic angles used to get you to mock and despise him. You can’t actually believe you will know who someone is, through strategically crafted article headlines and hyped up gossip?

This is a tried and tested technique to spur on discussion, to act as click bait and alter your imaginations and sway your assumptions of someone you truly know very little about. So stop speaking like you have a clear view of who he is. I don’t determine who someone is through news “stories”. You are being played by these perception-puppeteers in the media once again.

If you don’t really know him, reserve your judgement or just carry on being a hand puppet for the long arm of the media, which is usually over-reaching 🙄

It’s likely people with lots of followers, who benefit from the engagement but want to virtue signal by hiding the check mark. 10. Well, you probably don’t know that Twitter was losing billions of dollars in the years BEFORE Elon Musk took over the company. In fact it was only profitable 2 out of the previous 12 years.
But sure, the co-ordinated media hate-campaigns against Elon Musk and Twitter have been effective in damaging their advertising income. That said, most of the large advertisers have returned and there has been a record increase in small business advertising on the platform. At the same time Elon Musk has massively cut costs, cut the number of employees from 7.500 to less than one thousand, renegotiated lower prices for things like office rent and cloud servers, and effectivized the company in many ways.
It is expected that X will break even this year and make a good profit next year.

      Delete
    11. and still isn’t making money and still won’t cover the 44billion dollar hole in his pocket in even 15 years. You typed all that out just for me to cap it off with that? That’s sad.

    12. you mean not paying rent or for servers- literally leading to lawsuits, employees getting evicted from offices, and Elon having to limit the amount of tweets everyone could see. Not really the disingenuous "renegotiated" you're trying to portray here.

      Delete
    13. you can blame “coordinated media hate-campaigns” but the reality is that it is Elon who has scared advertisers away from purchasing. Elon has hatcheted content moderation into oblivion and rendered it a platform advertisers would rather not be on. As much as Elon has cut costs, he has increased non-productive costs by saddling the company with tons of debt. The biggest cost Elon cut was headcount, which saved on order of a billion dollars in annual expenses, however that barely breaks even with the annual interest of the private equity debt Twitter took on during the purchase. As bad of shape as Twitter was in before the acquisition, it’s in worse shape now. Musk has no path to being in the green without getting advertisers back and paying off debt.

      Delete
    14. My bet is that X will become the largest social media(+banking/fincancing, shopping/e-commerce, news/journalism, gaming, etc.) platform on the planet within a few years.

      Delete
    15. Nope. You are like so many people simply indoctrinated by those hate-campaigns... but the reality is that hate-speech on the platform is down 30% since Elon Musk took over, and hate speech post impressions make up less than 0.003% of impressions, meaning 3 out of every 100.000 views.

      Delete
    16. Elon has cut costs yes, he has added a ton of features, he has introduced the paid subscription model, and we have not seen the top of the iceberg yet as he plans to expand the platform to include things like banking/fincancing, shopping/e-commerce, news/journalism, gaming features and more. I think X will be massively profitable within just a couple of years.

      Delete
    17. New features for the sake of new features do not matter, what matters is if they see a return. Paid subscriptions aren’t barely paying Twitter anything. More importantly, Twitter has no advantage over literally any other player in tech in the space of banking, shopping, gaming, or “more.”

Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Microsoft, and Facebook already operate in those spaces, and all of those companies are scaled larger and already profitable, whereas Twitter is struggling just to exist in its present niche and is completely hamstrung in its ability to fundraise since it went private. The only valuable space you mentioned that Twitter already has meaningful presence in is journalism, and Twitter is struggling to monetize just that space.

If you want to trust Musk to be your banking (if and when that is an option) then more power to you, I can’t save you from yourself. However Musk is going to tread water with Twitter for a while until he pulls the trigger to exit as gracefully as possible in order to save face. Frankly I don’t know that I don’t expect him to tank the share price of Tesla on the way down since his name and reputation are the only thing keeping Tesla valued so high.
