Kabosu, the dog best known to the internet as the inspiration behind the Doge meme cryptocurrency, has died.
Kabosu died on May 24, according to a blog post from his owner Atsuko Sato published the same day (translated from Japanese by Google Translate). A farewell party will be held on Sunday at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City.
The Shiba Inu dog became famous after a 2013 photo of him happened to be simply too adorable for the internet. It was soon immortalized in internet culture as the Doge meme, mostly consisting of photos of Kabosu adorned with comic sans text.
Kabosu was more than 17 years old at the time of his death and had been in poor health for a while, as previously documented on Sato's blog.
Numerous fans are saying goodbye to Kabosu on Twitter/X.

Besides taking the internet by storm and becoming one of the most recognizable memes ever, Doge also became a hugely important part of crypto culture, most importantly as the inspiration behind the Doge and Shiba Inu cryptocurrencies.

Delete😭 today I complimented an old lady on a sidewalk corner with the cutest shibe and I pointed my open hand at the dog and said “kawaii” and smiled. She was surprised and then thanked me for the compliment. Truly a remarkable dog. Sorry for the loss of the iconic Shiba Inu.

I was looking at the insta page this morning thinking the dog is so old and needs to be put down(before people start, i went through canine dementia with my own beloved pet and its awful, had to make the difficult decision to do so for her). Literally 2 hours later she died apparently. Crazy considering i never looked at that page before
ReplyDeleteI had to unfollow their insta cuz it was making me sad and uncomfortable. Watching Kabosu be so old and struggle so much, but have her mom keep wishing for her to live longer with more medicine and vet visits... Sometimes it's time to let go, and tell the pet it's okay to go too.
DeleteLetting go is a very hard thing to do. It can be the right thing, but it's not always something people are able to do, and I don't blame them for that.
DeleteI let go of my cat 10 years ago and a nagging part of my brain still says "What if he got better, what if I got to spend more time with him". Other people would probably reassure me that it was the right thing, but to this day it doesn't feel like that.
Absolutely. We let go of our cat 3 years ago after being suddenly diagnosed with heart failure (he had stopped eating, but nothing had been picked up before at the vets and the only sign before that was drinking more water). There’s always that “what-if?” even though you know you’ve done what was best for them

On the morning of the 24th of May, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Thank you all so much for your support over the years.
She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her.
Thank you all so much for loving Kabosu all these years. I am certain that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world
That makes me the happiest owner in the world.
