Hertz is trying to sell off its electric cars to renters
Hertz is reportedly trying to sell some of its electric vehicles to the people who are currently renting the cars. The rental car company is apparently looking to unload a portion of its EV fleet and is proactively reaching out to customers about the option to outright buy the vehicles they're renting.
A viral post on Reddit showed an apparent email from Hertz offering a customer the option to buy the very EV they were renting. In this case it was a 2023 Tesla Model 3 for $17,913. Folks in the comments mentioned getting similar offers for other EVs.
Hertz communications director Jamie Line told The Verge that this wasn't a new strategy and seemed to suggest it wasn't limited to EVs.
"By connecting our rental customers who opt into our emails to our sales channels, we’re not only building awareness of the fact that we sell cars but also offering a unique opportunity to someone who may be in the market for the same car they have on rent," Line said.
Hertz has long sold vehicles from its fleet and there are a number electric cars currently for sale on its site. Hertz did announce this year a plan to sell-off some 30,000 EVs after major losses.

2023 Tesla M3 for $18K ? Gosh, I'd love to accept such offer. Especially if this Tesla already on my hand and I'm paying lease for it.
ReplyDeleteThis is not new, enterprise has been selling teslas for years and u don’t have to be a renter
ReplyDeleteComes free with the opportunity to spend 20k on a Battery within 5 years
ReplyDeleteTesla M3 comes with 8 years and 100,000 miles main battery warranty. They sell 2023 models. It is highly unlikely you will spend $20K on a battery within 5 years.
Delete100k miles is not very many before the car becomes a yard sculpture.. no one is putting the new 20k battery in at 100k mile
Deletehertz car probably has 100k on it after 3 years
DeleteMight want to readjust your expectations on battery life. Some of these batteries will outlast cheap gas engines.

Take off hands for nothing
ReplyDeleteNo, thank you. Not even for free. Junk.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking to support someone who's facing a lot this month and needs a little extra help. If you're in a tough spot, just send me a message with the word 'FAITH' and I'll see what I can do.
ReplyDeleteOne rule to live by: Never buy a former rental car.
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on what kind of the rental. I'd say an average ex-corporate car is better looked after than an average privately owned.
Deletemy former boss used to rev the engine of the Cadillac, 300 and Infiniti that he rented as he doesn’t pay for gas or wear and tear.
DeleteI guess you really have to know how it was used. I wouldn’t take the chance without a good extended warranty.
Deletelmao all he did was rev the engine? Thats it?
Deleteright?!?! I will never forget the time my sister came to visit, drove a rental car from the airport and complained how the engine kept getting louder the faster she went, and she kept having to turn the radio up……turns out she had the car in manual shift instead of D. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
DeleteThat’s not even a car! lol
DeleteBuying an ex-rental car is like wanting to marry an ex-prost!tute
ReplyDeleteYou should think about how many people have driven it, and how they drove it
why? He’s not wrong 🤣😜
DeleteI bought a used Town & Country that was an ex rental. Paid a great price, bought a 100k Mike warranty and had no problems. I did use the warranty a couple of times, but it was electrical issues that could have happened anyway and only had to pay a $200 deductible. The car worked fine for a few years until my kids grew and we no longer needed it.
DeleteIf the price is below market and you can get an extended warranty, I don’t see much of an issue if the car looks good and drives well.
well said!
Deleteevs for rental is just a stupid idea. most people don't even know EV charging protocol
ReplyDeleteYeah. This isn't new. Buying used from a rental company is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteEvs arent the way forward, i drive one and hate it. It doesn’t make any sense.
ReplyDeleteyet!
DeleteI suppose your EV is not a Tesla...?
Deletelol you just plug 🔌 up into a EV charger!
DeleteI have helped and instructed about a dozen EV renters that were sent out with zero instruction and had never driven much less charged an EV
Deletedo you know EV charging protocol? doesn’t look hard for smart people .
Deleteactually a tesla is not the same as a hybrid or a prius. What model do you have? I have a model 3 since 2019 and cybertruck being built. Actually you would be shocked at how idiotic and unprepared people who try to drive them are.
Deleteall new models have standard ports .
Deletebless your heart
Deletehappy holidays

DeleteBob Donaldson Even as an EV owner, I don't think I'd want the added hassle, but I suppose it depends on what I plan on doing with the car when I pick it up. The rental car experience is already enough hassle for short business trips
DeleteIf it's a short term rental where the driver won't be going far, say someone coming into town for a conference, an EV isn't a bad choice honestly. There's been plenty of times where I've had a rental for a week and used less than a quarter of a tank. The real question is does the rental company require it be charged up on return?! If I have to charge it up before returning then yeah f that. 🤣
DeleteAnything but a Tesla or Musk mobile.
ReplyDeleteThis isn’t a new practice. Most, if not all rental car places sell their cars either in their own lots or to dealerships or auctions. They are the largest purchasers for new vehicles (if I recall, Enterprise/ERAC was the number 1 purchaser of new vehicles in the US) and they replenish their fleets usually in less than 5 years. Where did you think the cars went?
ReplyDeleteI'd buy a Tesla (despite Elon being a shitass) before I'd buy a mechanical car. Only so much they can mess up on a Tesla.
ReplyDeletewait for the battery to go.
DeleteThese will sell like hotcakes. Tesla's are very durable, much more likely to be serviceable despite abuse by renters. Hertz should be keeping them for another 2 years to spread the costs. CEO does not understand the inherent advantages of a Tesla. Our gain, their loss.
ReplyDelete2 more years and the batteries will have had to have been replaced.
DeletePut the opium down, grandad.
Tesla’s Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty covers 8 years/120k miles. In regards to the battery, it claims that is will replace the battery under warranty if anytime within this period, the battery retention falls below 70% of the original range..... I don't require recreational drugs young fella, life is good with great friends, food and music.
Deletehe knows. 😂
Deleteawwww you're special needs. Its not 2012 anymore markie. We replace CELLS in the battery not the whole battery. Update your brain son. I've owned mine since 2019 and have a cybertruck being built (and nope I don't care if you like them or not - when you can afford buy one of the long range then we can chat)
DeleteWe don't replace the ENTIRE battery (aka rebuilding or replacing the engine in a gas car which typically with good maintenance needs done at or around a 200k mark in a gas car.......cells in a tesla are replaced as needed usually around 400-500K.......our Chevy Silverado had ALMOST 380,000 miles but it took SOOOOOOOOOO much money and time and upkeep ......my tesla they come to my house to do anything I need and in 5 yrs I have needed my seat lever replaced when my child stepped on it and cracked it. The ONLY maintenance on my tesla in 5 yrs was new tires as needed.......so keep believing gossip and rumors from people who don't own a tesla that will get you really far, in the meantime you keep on doing those oil changes, tune ups, air filters, belt changes, timing belts, transmission fluid top offs brake pads, spark plugs etc etc etc etc etc and all require TIME from the owner be lost from personal time to do it themselves OR in shop time. Whereas if anything needs done to our cars........its done in our driveway or while we are at work in the parking lot and they text you when they are finished. .......

ReplyDelete1 year old Tesla M3 for $18K. I want it!!!
ReplyDeleteI would buy 3....one for myself, and one each for the kids....LOL
DeleteKdyž chceš levnou Teslu...
ReplyDeleteThey've always done this, not just with EVs. Every rental i've ever driven from hertz, budget, avis, and enterprise has had a little sticker on the windshield or drivers side window that says something like "Like our car? Buy our cars!"
ReplyDeletePersonally I think it's an awful idea to buy a car that's been rented out because you have literally no way of knowing how previous renters treated it. You'd basically be rolling the dice on it even more so than buying from a used car lot.
Wait until they find out what a new battery costs. 🤣
ReplyDeletewait until you actually do some research 🤣
DeleteI’m an automotive writer, Einstein. 🤣🤣🤣
Deletethen you'd know that an EV battery tends to last upwards of 150,000 miles and is recyclable.
DeleteWhich has nothing to do with the price. But thanks for your comment.
Deletebeing recyclable has a lot to do with the price.
DeleteThat’s nice to know.
DeleteI can tell you why they are not selling. Once they drive off the lot. They lost 30k in value. They are still trying to to sell them what they bought them for.
ReplyDeleteyet!
ReplyDeletewe arent ready for Ev yet , i agree.
ReplyDeleteyou mean EVs which have been around for over 100 years?
ReplyDeleteI suppose your EV is not a Tesla...?
ReplyDeletehave an EQE ( non Tesla ) and I love it, Mercedes right meets EV.
ReplyDeleteit is a Tesla Model 3 . Bought it brand new and super hate it 😂. I would love to burn it but then i remember i paid 40k for that 😂
ReplyDeleteI have a Kia EV, love it. The interior of a Tesla is kind of depressing.
ReplyDeleteis your EV a forklift? My Kia EV makes perfect sense, no pratting about with fuel stations. Loving it.
ReplyDeleteHertz keeps vehicles up to 22 months, a 2023 vehicle would be reaching that region 🤷
ReplyDeleteYou look so cool
ReplyDeleteYou. Suppr. Pesh. Good. 🌹🌹
ReplyDeletewhoa, why if may ask? Prefer Chinese EV?
ReplyDeleteyou mean......a Chinese Tesla lol ....
ReplyDeleteThe #1 reason why people use them to race them in NHRA EV class racing. I can prove this actually. Throughout the years drivers have rented cars and raced them and teslas are easy to race and return in stock class of EV. (My husband is an NHRA driver and we have a tesla and we have a Stock Eliminator Race car as well)
ReplyDeleteThe second reason is because people are stupid, childish and irresponsible with them. You don't just get in and go and act like a moron not plugging them in or planning ahead. Yes we get 300 miles to a change but people don't THINK and make sure that they have or ask for the 110 outlet or the 220 adapter and they run them out and not a lot of people know that there is an alternate battery around then underside of the frunk and you can jump it off a normal car just like a normal battery in a gas car......plus they would likely screw the car up. I would NEVER rent my tesla on Turo and we have turo listings but I would never trust some idiotic renter to take care of it because you have to actually be responsible and mature and not reckless. Everyone wants to play FSD and Summon and Ludachris Mode and they screw up the cars. Major liability.
I bought my last 2 Dodge Minivans from Enterprise. Both were same year models. Bought the 07 in spring 08, drove it till 2018. And 184,000 miles when I replaced it with a 2018 bought summer 18. No major issues. Just routine maintenance oil, tires, and such on both.
ReplyDeleteThis is not new, Enterprise has been selling cars for years..lol
ReplyDeletewait for the battery to go.
ReplyDeleteor wait for the combustion engine and all its parts to go. EV batteries last for years if you do your research.
ReplyDeleteyep. They also enjoy bursting into flames 😂
ReplyDeleteyou're prone to generalisation there. It suits your anti-EV narrative and that of the mainstream media. Far more combustion engines burst into flames every day. Everything from vehicles to passenger aircraft, including the crash in South Korea. I've seen far more fires from traditional cars on motorways. A convenient oversight. What next? The batteries degrade rapidly? Another exaggerated myth lol.
ReplyDeleteat least musk did not design nor invent the Tesla. He just bumped the 2 guys who did out!
ReplyDeleteTesla stock is up 66% and no one cares what a few thousand of you say or think
ReplyDeleteHertz how come y'all never reply to customer posts on Facebook? 🤔
ReplyDeleteI am sure they are actively monitoring every tag by any FB user, like you 😜😜
Deleteshhhh relax, lady
Deleteno problem little Mama, anytime ! Keep those fingers crossed that Hertz is monitoring for you Karen. I am sure they will not only reply but the CEO will call you cause you tagged them. Now go get your nails prettied up and makeup on for your NYE debutant ball, lady. 💅
Deleteyessir, plugin hybrids too 😎😎
ReplyDelete... we've purchased three new cars, and two used cars from rentals. The rentals lasted longer, and required less service over time.
ReplyDeleteI bet they are !!
ReplyDeleteThey stole $5k from me
ReplyDeleteHertz has been dumping these TESLA models since july.. Enterprise, Hertz, have been selling used inventory for years.. And making a fortune doing this.. https://www.enterprisecarsales.com/
