Tesla Cybertruck pulled up to the glass entrance doors of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on New Year's Day, began emitting smoke and then exploded, according to authorities.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a media briefing that one individual in the car died and seven others sustained injuries. McMahill added that authorities were investigating "a number of leads."

He also acknowledged the alleged terror attack in New Orleans early on New Year's Day, during which a driver rammed into a crowd, killing at least 10 people. Law enforcement later found suspected improvised explosive devices in the city.

McMahill said local authorities were searching Las Vegas for any "secondary devices," adding that "...there does not appear to be any further threat to our community here, now."

What caused the Cybertruck to explode?

The cause of the Cybertruck's explosion outside of the Trump hotel was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said the explosion was caused by "fireworks and/or a bomb in the bed of the rented cybertruck" in an X post Wednesday. Earlier, Musk posted on X that the "whole senior Tesla team" was investigating the matter.

"We’ve never seen anything like this," he wrote.

Musk is a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, as well as one of his biggest donors. Musk gave at least $277 million to Trump and other Republicans during the 2024 election cycle, according to The Washington Post.

The Cybertruck has been plagued by recalls this year. In December, 700,000 Tesla vehicles, including certain Cybertrucks, were affected by a recall related to a tire pressure warning light. The problem could cause users to unknowingly drive on low-pressure tires. Other recall notices involved glitches with the windshield wiperrearview display, and accelerator pedal.

UPDATE: Jan. 1, 2025, 4:17 p.m. PST This story has been updated to correct the number of Cybertrucks affected by a December recall. The tire pressure warning recall applied to 700,000 Tesla vehicles overall, including certain Cybertrucks.

    1. What worries me about the two incidents is how they can be seized upon by Trump to justify the things he says he's going to do on day one of his presidency. My suspicion is that the Tesla incident will turn out to be down to a faulty battery but the New Orleans incident is more worrying. It is being claimed that an ISIS flag was found in the vehicle, but I wasn't aware that ISIS was active at the moment. This raises the worry that it may have been a false flag attack, ie one carried out by people in the Trump/Musk axis to make it easier to justify a sudden lurch towards authoritarianism. This may sound like paranoia, and I hope that that is all it is, but there's nothing to gain from this for Islamic fundamentalists, not for the Sunnis of ISIS nor the Shiites of Iran, but there is a lot to be gained by the incoming government, which appears to be populated by people so extreme that it might just turn out to be responsible. This will not be like the previous Trump administration, which was hard-right as it was. This will be an administration much further to the right, one like we've never seen in America before, and we are entering uncharted waters, not just for the USA but for Europe too - they've already started meddling in the domestic politics of the UK and Germany. What sort of nutcases are we dealing with here? Today Musk called for Tommy Robinson to be released from jail. That's the sort of crazies who are going to be running the show.

    2. Obviously Musk is trying to assasinate Trump. Musk want to be President and Trump is standing in his way.

      Delete
    3. Musk cannot be president as he was not born in the USA - he was born in South Africa to South African parents. His role of "special advisor" makes him so powerful that he doesn't need the title. I'm wondering what might happen if there are too many policy disagreements - does Trump have an "accident"? In the event of the demise of Trump, VP J.D. Vance becomes president, and he's too weak to stand up to Musk, and probably wise enough to want to stay alive.

    3. The only reason Trump is not indicted is because of the Office of Legal Council opinion that a sitting president cannot be indicted.

The full list of Mueller indictments and plea deals

      1) George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, was arrested in July 2017 and pleaded guilty in October 2017 to making false statements to the FBI. He got a 14-day sentence.

      2) Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chair, was indicted on a total of 25 different counts by Mueller’s team, related mainly to his past work for Ukrainian politicians and his finances. He had two trials scheduled, and the first ended in a conviction on eight counts of financial crimes. To avert the second trial, Manafort struck a plea deal with Mueller in September 2018 (though Mueller’s team said in November that he breached that agreement by lying to them). He was sentenced to a combined seven and a half years in prison.

      3) Rick Gates, a former Trump campaign aide and Manafort’s longtime junior business partner, was indicted on similar charges to Manafort. But in February 2018 he agreed to a plea deal with Mueller’s team, pleading guilty to just one false statements charge and one conspiracy charge. He was sentenced to 45 days in prison and 3 years of probation.

      4) Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to making false statements to the FBI.

5-20) 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies were indicted on conspiracy charges, with some also being accused of identity theft. The charges related to a Russian propaganda effort designed to interfere with the 2016 campaign. The companies involved are the Internet Research Agency, often described as a “Russian troll farm,” and two other companies that helped finance it. The Russian nationals indicted include 12 of the agency’s employees and its alleged financier, Yevgeny Prigozhin.

      21) Richard Pinedo: This California man pleaded guilty to an identity theft charge in connection with the Russian indictments, and has agreed to cooperate with Mueller. He was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 6 months of home detention in October 2018.

      22) Alex van der Zwaan: This London lawyer pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Rick Gates and another unnamed person based in Ukraine. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and has completed his sentence.

      23) Konstantin Kilimnik: This longtime business associate of Manafort and Gates, who’s currently based in Russia, was charged alongside Manafort with attempting to obstruct justice by tampering with witnesses in Manafort’s pending case last year.

24-35) 12 Russian GRU officers: These officers of Russia’s military intelligence service were charged with crimes related to the hacking and leaking of leading Democrats’ emails in 2016.

      36) Michael Cohen: In August 2018, Trump’s former lawyer pleaded guilty to 8 counts — tax and bank charges, related to his finances and taxi business, and campaign finance violations — related to hush money payments to women who alleged affairs with Donald Trump, as part of a separate investigation in New York (that Mueller had handed off). But in November, he made a plea deal with Mueller too, for lying to Congress about efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

      37) Roger Stone: In January 2019, Mueller indicted longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone on 7 counts. He accused Stone of lying to the House Intelligence Committee about his efforts to get in touch with WikiLeaks during the campaign, and tampering with a witness who could have debunked his story. He was convicted on all counts after a November 2019 trial.

Finally, there is one other person Mueller initially investigated, but handed over to others in the Justice Department to charge: Sam Patten. This Republican operative and lobbyist pleaded guilty to not registering as a foreign agent with his work for Ukrainian political bigwigs, and agreed to cooperate with the government.
