Tesla is no longer taking orders for its Model S and Model X electric vehicles in China, Reuters reports.

However, Elon Musk's EV company is still selling other Tesla models in China. So, why remove those specific vehicles from Tesla's website in China?

While Tesla has not provided an official reason, both the Model S and Model X are made in the United States.

Amid President Donald Trump's trade war with China, it appears Trump's "special government employee" Elon Musk has been caught in the crossfire. On Friday morning, China announced it would raise its tariff on U.S. goods to 125 percent in retaliation for the 145 levy Trump has placed on goods from China. The tariff on U.S. goods will go into effect on Saturday, April 12, Bloomberg reports.

Last year, China imported 1,553 Model X cars and 311 Model S cars, according to a China Auto Dealers Association analyst. As Reuters reports, these two models account for less than 0.5 percent of the more than 657,000 Tesla deliveries in 2024. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y vehicles are made in China and are sold both within the country and exported to European markets, among others. While the Model S and Model X are less popular in China, this development only adds to Tesla's many problems.

Musk's EV car company is currently experiencing sales problems around the world. A March report found that Tesla sales were down in Germany by a whopping 76 percent. Tesla sales in Australia have dropped by nearly 72 percent. Meanwhile, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association found that Tesla vehicle registrations across the EU dropped by 45 percent last year overall.

Some of Tesla's current customers are rejecting Musk's company as well. Tesla owners looking to give up their vehicles have pushed Tesla trade-ins to record highs. In fact, Tesla trade-ins are becoming so prominent that the company is reportedly turning away customers looking to trade-in their Cybertrucks

At the same time, used Tesla prices have fallen significantly as Tesla owners look to get rid of their ties to Musk through Tesla.

When it comes to the EV market in China, specifically, Tesla is also facing its strongest competition yet in the Chinese carmaker BYD, which is now selling more hybrid and EV vehicles than Tesla.

  1. Easy enough for Tesla to stop exporting from here to China to avoid the tariffs. They have their biggest factory in China. With an annual production capacity of over 950,000 vehicles, the Shanghai Gigafactory is a key pillar of Tesla's global strategy.

  5. The highest volume cars, the Model Y and Model 3 are already made in China, so no big deal for Tesla. If you compare Tesla to other car makers, almost all the other American makers will get hit hard by the tariffs. It’s absolutely ridiculous to have a story that highlights the strategy change Tesla is making when the story is 5x more impact with other car companies.

    3. The model X and S are Tesla's premiere models. So it is a big deal. If their "strategy change" is to pull their high end cars from the Chinese market, and surrender that market share to BYD, who arguably makes a better product, seems like a really dumb "strategy." Unless they're admitting their products no longer measure up...

    4. GM builds the Buick Envision & Chevy Equinox in China & import them into the USA. Unless Trump gives them a pass they will have to come up with something as those two vehicles will be unsellable in the US after 100+% tariff on them.

  8. Tesla went further, they are no longer offering the Model S and Model X in China, removing their sales on the higher end, higher-margin vehicles. Keep in mind neither of these models sold well in the first place, and their factories produce model 3 and Y's in China and will continue. Tesla also exports Chinese-made Tesla's to Europe, however there are existing tariffs on incoming Tesla from China imposed by the EU and those will likely continue or increase in light of Trump's trade war, making it more difficult for Tesla to export.

Keep in mind Tesla also has no plans to sell the Cybertruck in Tesla, for several reasons including the difficulty to price it into the market and restrictions on light trucks in China that would mean the Cybertruck is unlikely to meet road safety and other requirements in the country.

Despite all that, this frankly won't have a huge effect on Tesla sales in China because there was little demand for these models anyway, given that there is stiff competition in China from EV automakers, especially in the performance category.

    1. false. They have the most cash on hand and the best margins of any carmaker in the USA. Also, they overwhelmingly make cars where they sell them. So they are the LEAST impacted by tariffs. Ford, GM, and Chrysler at 10x worse off.

  38. So many sheep with so little knowledge of economics… it’s sad, really. If these tariffs were only bad for America, the other countries wouldn’t be scrambling to make deals with the US. America accounts for 40% of world consumerism. These tariffs will cripple economies across the globe, and it’s happening in China right now. They will have no choice but to come to the negotiating table. Why don’t you people see this is a net positive for the US? Will it be painful for a short time? Sure, but it will pay off in the long run.

Additionally, like Warren Buffet said, “Some people are not emotionally or psychologically fit to own stocks”, and it shows with the illogical selloff in the market. Once the deals are made, the US market will take off. Anyone with any economic sense knows this. You lose nothing by staying in the market. You only lose when you panic sell.
