  5. Lol we're just doing what we did with cable back in the day. Up until the early 90s there were thousands of local and regional cable providers. Cable was fairly inexpensive. Then, we(the government) allowed bigger companies to start buying up these smaller local companies. Giving us less, almost no, choice on cable providers. And, what do ya know, prices skyrocketed. Then streaming came along. Fairly cheap, lots of options. Then the government started allowing consolidation, removing choice for consumers and, what do ya know, prices skyrocketed. Time is a flat circle. Nothing changes. No one learns from past mistakes.

  7. It would seem to me that two revenue streams is better than one, but who am I to wisdom of a country that just posted a $500 million loss and now a $111 billion offer they can't afford. Smart men.

  8. I currently receive HBO and HBO Max through my cable carrier. HBO Max is free to me because of my monthly HBO subscription. I am pretty sure that quite a few subscribers of HBO are currently getting it for free through cable. Why would you force consumers to pay for something they are already entitled to HBO/HBO Max in order to receive something they don't want (Paramount+). It's stupid. In a six year span, they've had 3 buyers, gotten rid of individual on demand apps for HBO and Cinemax, all to waste money on an app they are about to shutter to force people to pay more money to watch on demand content they are rightfully entitled to because they are merging with a company that nobody is interested in or else they wouldn't need to do this shady crap. Talk about a waste of money. Why would you screw over your consumers?

  13. Lovely. Now everything will merge into the Paramount+ service I’m sure, which is frustrating because Paramount+ is literally the worst service out there. It’s slow and has a terrible user interface. The HBO Max service has been one of my favorites and it’s continuing to be ruined. First adding all Discovery content has bogged it down and now being merged with Paramount. We can’t have anything nice.

    1. HBOMax has the bigger footprint and is profitable they might rename it but they’re not gonna keep the actual Paramount+ app. Why would they pull out of 60+ markets and re work on tech to launch when they already have the footprint. Especially when they have savings to make.

This is mumbo jumbo to say HBO Max will be rebranded with new Paramount content.

Just like what happened with HBO Now/Go to HBOMAX then HBO Max to Max then Max to HBOMAX .

Also this will take years by the way.

      Delete
    2. The canceling of shows happened instantly with the discovery merger. Consumers have seen this shitshow before.

  32. Hard to see Crave surviving this unless they buy up the Canadian rights to some other libraries.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The CRTC will complicate things for paramount though. HBO didn't just give up the rights here to their most valuable IP to be nice, there are rules about Canadian content here so there's a good chance it's mutually beneficial for Paramount and Crave to get along.

      Delete
    2. Without knowing the details of the HBO deal with Crave, I feel Crave and Paramount will just do a deal for Crave to also get Paramount content for Canada. That way, they don't have to deal with Paramount+ in Canada.

      Delete
    3. Paramount+ is and has been in Canada for years. I'm confused by your comment.

      Delete
    4. I know it's been here. But it must take work and money to keep the thing on. It could cost them less to have their content in Canada through a deal with Crave instead of having to run it themselves up here.

      Delete
    5. As someone that subscribes to both I hope not. Paramount+ offers HDR on a lot of their content, crave does not.

Perhaps that could change, but for now I prefer the separation.

That said if it is a cheaper option, then yes I wholeheartedly agree it'll likely happen eventually.

      Delete
    6. And it sucks . It's a terrible platform with limited content. Crave is also a terrible platform though so I'm not sure what is best

      Delete
  33. So one thing I think people forget is that pretty sure the previous WBD HBO deal with Crave would have to be honored. So even if Paramount buys WBD and it somehow gets approved quickly. Crave will still probably have HBO rights for several more years. Several years to figure out the next play.

Now let’s say it’s several years from now, Crave’s WBD exclusivity deal is done. Paramount can now exclusively bring it into their platform in Canada finally and cut HBO from Crave. They most likely will. But I wouldn’t say it’s 100% chance. Paramount might feel like, you know what, it’s easier to just get a massive cheque from Bell for HBO content, rather than invest millions growing our sub base in Canada (that is after all the conclusion WBD made). But anyway by then who knows how many years it is, and how drastically different the media environment is. So you can’t predict anything really.

Also the Paramount deal might not even go through regulatory. Even if it does in America cause of the corrupt Trump administration, there is still the matter of the European Union approving it, and maybe even other countries.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly. Being bought out by another company doesn’t void any past agreements. They have to honour the commitments or face potential litigation.

It could be years or even decades until that agreement is done.

      Delete
    2. Also a chance the money spent on production of HBO shows can be redirected to paramount shows. They may still have to license HBO, but may not have a responsibility to upkeep new series like they had been doing.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, existing content agreements will absolutely affect how soon WB content can come to Paramount Plus/leave Crave. When Disney bought 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox), they still had to honour an agreement that Fox had signed with HBO prior to the acquisition that gave them streaming rights to new Fox movies. So for a while, Fox movies released under Disney either went exclusively to HBO Max in the US/Crave in Canada, or were released simultaneously on HBO/Crave and Disney’s streaming services.

      Delete
    4. Based on how much debt the company will be in I'm sure they'd prefer a guaranteed cheque from Bell

      Delete
  34. I do wonder if Bell has enough money to continue to licence what they have from WBD for Crave if this massive merger goes through.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don’t think Paramount will want to license its content since they already have their own platform available in Canada, as opposed to HBO Max, but we’ll see.

      Delete
    2. I could see some kind of co-licencing thing like what Rogers does with a bunch of Disney/Hulu content that’s advertised for Citytv+ but also just airs quietly on Disney+.

      Delete
    3. Paramount doesn't want that. They only let bell keep TV rights for Star Trek, the same would happen with WBD content. They only care about growing Paramount+ outside of the US.

      Delete
    4. Paramount already licenses out some of its originals to Netflix in Canada. 1883, 1923 S01, and Yellowstone S1-4 are on Netflix here. So they hook you on Netflix then make you sub for the latest seasons.

      Delete
    5. Max has been launching in other markets, primarily across Europe. Even without the deal, I’d imagine they bring their content to Canada directly.

      Delete
  35. Really hard to continue to avoid U.S. streaming services.

If Crave becomes useless I'll give up streaming and buy DVD's of old stuff to watch I guess.

      Delete
    5. This is a great option for people who mostly watch movies but the people who mostly watch shows are SOL

      Delete
    6. Crave is already useless. It's by far the worst platform for performance, pricing and original content. Most Canadians use it because it's the only way to access HBO content. No idea why you feel any loyalty towards Bell Media 🙄

      Delete
    7. I only choose them because they are cheap and Canadian. Bell sucks, in general, for sure.

      Delete
  36. I wish this would happen, then I'd actually get decent video and audio quality from HBO shows, Crave is ugh.

    1. Paramount quit working for us last year - we were running it on our PS5 and using Starlink, never did figure out what sent wrong with it. Your results may vary.

      Delete
  38. This is assuming the merger will go through. They still have a few legal hurdles.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Personally I think streaming platforms of a certain size should have to operate in Canada for any streaming in Canada. That should resolve the issue. And protect Canadian jobs.

That said even with this it’s far too soon to know what will happen. The deal is only just now being negotiated. There’s plenty of experts stating that there’s many parts of it that may cause for the deal to fall through and that’s not even addressing the international regulatory mess they’re going to have to wade through which itself could cause it to be upended. Many deals of this size fail spectacularly. But even when they don’t the outcome is often very different.

Only time will tell on what will be the result. And this is going to take years.

    4. It’s litteraly the worst streaming service… they don’t even care to show us what’s playing in which format….in 2026 while every other apps does it?! Don’t get me started on the playback experience, switching french with english and vice versa or when the season finale won’t even stream until next day because their servers crashout.

      Delete
    5. Like i said never had problem

      Delete
    6. I’d say it used to be. It’s a lot better now as they made massive improvements to it. A lot of the old bugs and issues are now gone and it looks much more polished. I’m a developer myself so would have criticized it before but to me it looks like they listened and redeveloped it.

Either way whether you like it or not doesn’t mean we should give all of our money to the US. Our government dos need to be pushing for more protection for Canadian jobs and industry.

    ReplyDelete

  100. I have paramount+ through prime video. Does this mean I’ll get access to HBO programming on there?

    ReplyDelete
  101. And increase the prices ughh

    ReplyDelete
  102. Should add Paramount+ content into HBO Max, since it's a vastly superior app that can actually manage synching audio with the video, UNLIKE PARAMOUNT+ where everyone's lips become unsynched easily, and never corrects without fast-forwarding or rewinding to force it to start playback from another place. That said, this entire deal should be rejected by regulators as it'll result in redundancies and probably a TON of layoffs as compared to if they had instead moved forward with Netflix's deal. :-\

    ReplyDelete
  103. Cancel and steal it

    ReplyDelete
  104. ParaMax BO++ Ultra. Whatever, as long as they bring back all the marquee HBO shows and good TV content like Adult Swim they cut from Max. If they’re going to drop anything, how about all the Discovery reality TV trash? … and bring back Warrior, what were they thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  105. They haven’t merged, they plan on it if the merger is approved.

    ReplyDelete
  106. The two services I can never get a good feed with. Match made in heaven!

    ReplyDelete
  107. let me guess - they are also merging the prices together too so you are still paying for both

  112. So if I am remembering history correctly, there was cable, and then there came streaming services. So everybody ditched cable and started signing up for these individual services. Then companies started losing money because there were so many different streaming services to choose from, so the services started combining. So now we have....cable again?

  116. Just don't fuckin move all of HBO contents and subscribers over to Paramount+ app

Have it like what happen with Discovery. A bunch of Discovery content just went to HBO Max.

All the same for them anyway. They will get the sub money in the end no matter if you are on Paramount+ or HBO Max or whatever they wanna call the app.

HBO is the much bigger and prestigious brand name so it would be wise for them to not mess with that too much.

  118. Let’s face it- most people don’t want endless apps. I would rather have a $34 ad free subscription for paramount and hbo than pay $38 for both each month. And for people complaining about the price, get ads - it’s like basic cable.

We are paying so much less than cable/basic cable used to be. How are people so mad about being able to selectively choose how and what they watch as opposed to cable?

Do you not remember like 6-8years ago when having anything at all required a “basic package” of 89.95 - 149.95? PER MONTH!? I cannot believe that you are unable to understand that if you only want to pay xx amount then you are free to cycle around with only two or three apps. There’s also YouTube.

And don’t get me started on regional sports fees. I don’t have an interest in sports but I was subsidizing that hobby for $6.95 up to $9.95 a month. Yeah, I shouldn’t have to pay for your sports for $120 per year.

  121. I hope HBO isn't screwed up, because it was the last decent streaming platform out there, with multilingual dubs for almost everything, few technical hiccups unless using VPN, no forced commercials even for paid customers, and a good lineup of original series and movies.

  123. Ok but with all this money and mergers can paramount maybe get their app working where it doesnt freeze and crash all the time or lock up or get stuck on commercial break that loops 2-3 times .

I like their stuff but bar far the worse user experience of all the other apps. lets hope this merger brings the tech talent from HBO over

  124. I forget paid streaming services even exist most of the time, I genuinely cannot believe people pay these companies. HBO is the only TV studio that I expect good quality projects from though, so I am saddened to know that quality will likely decline.

  130. Bring back cable and commercials lol. I’m done with having to navigate the politics of what streaming platform I’m allowed to pay for without guilty conscience
