  1. Lol I'm so glad this ghetto ass airline is gone. It allowed people with zero class to travel to places they only serve to disgrace. These cruise lines are the same. They take a four star "luxury" experience and turn it into a public subway in New York.... Gross. Not everyone should yave the right to enjoy these things unless they can pay for it. Price being a barrier is a good thing it keeps out the scum.

  4. I know an airplane mechanic who worked for Spirit. We had lunch the other day and he told me:

    1- most airplane engines are attached to the plane with just 3 bolts and;

2- he knew of at least one time a Spirit plane flew untold numbers of flights over a 6 month period with only two bolts attaching the engine. Someone had forgotten to put the third bolt in and whoever was supposed to check it and sign off on it never actually looked at it.

    😬

  8. I was on a flight back from Puerto Rico to Boston during the winter months. Let me say that leaving the island is hard enough whenever I have to do it. For me is big ugly sad.

So the flight attendant was doing a call on the overhead right before they shut the door. She was like "well it looks like we're going to Boston where it's cold and gross. Sucks for you but I'll be back here tonight!"

The beginning of the trip going to the island didn't go well either. I had missed my flight prior because we got to the airport late going to Puerto Rico. I ended up paying for a different airline. Halfway through my trip I check my flight going back to Boston and the app said no flight was found. I find out that they cancelled my return flight automatically with no refund. I had to call and talk with a supervisor for a "one time courtesy" to be made so I could have my flight back to the mainland. I never flew with them after that.

Thankfully one of my stewardess pals had left a handle on one of the wings and I was able to jump and grab it in time as we quickly took off with me in tow and I made it to work on time!! Private equity is already circling the wreckage. But before they lock it up — there is a narrow window for something that has never happened in commercial aviation. The passengers, the workers, and the communities Spirit served can take it back. Like the Green Bay Packers and like WinCo Foods."

Go forth at your own risk but I believe this is an amazing opportunity for Americans.

  21. The only time I flew Spirit airlines we were lucky to be on time, the whole experience was just perfect, the majority of the passengers were young, they all looked under 35, there were no old people holding up the boarding, everyone was so fast and efficient, I was genuinely shocked after all my flying experience with United

  30. I feel terribly for the employees out of the job and travelers who got stranded. However, they were a terrible airline. I never had a good experience the times I had to fly with them. Very confused by all these positive spirit comments. It was only a “budget” airline if you looked at the base fare only and nothing else they charged you in fees.

  31. Airlines are credit card companies with planes. Spirit was not funded by a generous credit card bank. It did not help that they looked like a cheap taxi and bragged about mistreating customers.

Businesses go out of business because they don’t meet customer needs. Customers want rewards, points, status, and service. So long to the Dollar Tree of the skies. Nobody will miss Spirit.

I had to buy another ticket, with a different airline, pay for an extra nights stay, etc etc. Spent a lot of extra money i wasn’t expecting to. The refund of the ticket did not cover even half my expenses from the unexpected set back. I have fought tooth and nail to try to get reimbursed, Spirit finally said they were reviewing my receipts. And now this. Guess I’m out of luck.

  64. There was a Planet Money episode that did a good job explaining why they’ve been struggling to compete with the big airlines lately. Tldr; larger airlines started to compete on price with different fare options like basic economy and such, and also startled leaning into their loyalty programs which are a lot more valuable with the amount of routes they offer.

Anecdotally, I’ve flown spirit like once, but most of the time I don’t find their prices that much lower that I can’t pass them up. I’ll fly other budget carriers too if it’s the best price, but most of the time when you factor in baggage and how convenient or not the times are, it’s just more worthwhile to fly Delta

  73. Over the past 6 months, the small airport near where I live in SW Arizona, which stores airplanes that are no longer being used, has gone from having about 3 or 4 Spirit Airlines jets, to having 25+ all lined up near the fencing. It's a sea of bright yellow.

I figured they were going under when every time I drove past, there were more jets out to pasture. Most have the Spirit name covered up on their sides, but the yellow is unmistakable.

  80. And nothing of value was lost. Worst customer service experience I’ve ever had, it’s like a Waffle House in the sky.

I flew with them for a SC to NY vacation years ago. We were delayed by hours but I wasn’t bothered (I fly a lot for work, used to it). I was, however, sitting near the gate to wait. I was appalled at how rude the 2 Spirit gate agents were to everyone asking valid questions. One woman went up to ask for a number to fix a connection due to the delay. She was calm and normal and the agents snapped at her, really loudly, “Ma’am, you need to be patient!”

My husband and I were both really confused but it got worse with everyone who came up with questions. By the end, we were laughing about how absurdly outsized their reactions were at everything, it felt like an SNL skit almost.

That should have been the sign. When we got on the plane, it was worse. The plane was old and had actual tape all over it, inside and out. I can’t complain about that, the flight was cheap, so it was somewhat expected but the FAs were rude as shit on the plane, too! We had the safety seats and the lady who came to ask if we could do the job included in her speech, “if you can’t assist, you WILL be moved” in a super rude way. Just really rotten energy and for no reason.

Another woman near us asked about earplugs or headphones and the FA said “you’re not getting anything right now!” That in itself was weird, but it felt like the FA had an instant personality shift when she was trying to get everyone to sign up for a club/card with them.

It literally felt like everyone with Spirit was rude and disproportionately angry to have to do their jobs. No one else was being rude or yelling, drunk or mad. Just them. On the way back, our flight was badly delayed again. My husband and I were joking about drawing straws to see who would have to go deal with customer service. We ultimately ended up not flying Spirit home. It is among the top 5 weirdest and most unpleasant flying experiences I’ve ever had.

  81. I feel weirdly sad about this. I fly a lot and when I was young and didn't have a lot of money, Spirit was my pal. When I moved states 7 years ago and got homesick, I could hop on a $60 round trip flight home and stuff my backpack to the seams and pray they didn't make me pay for a carry-on. It's gotten me out situations when I had to fly home last minute when Delta was trying to charge $700 for a round trip flight. They were always transparent about their bare-bones policy (you are paying for the flight, everything else is an add-on).

Really, though, I feel absolutely terrible for the thousands of employees who are now out of a job.

    3. There’s nothing wrong with you, it’s a GOOD quality to have to feel the hurt of someone who is hurting not of their own doing.

Little kids have this kind of empathy too, and then we tease it out of them or teach them it’s silly and weak.

You’re a good person, keep it up.

      Delete
    4. I really appreciate this :) It can feel really exhausting to carry so much empathy sometimes. I care so much about the world despite it being the way it is. I feel like we’re in an empathy drought right now society-wide.

I really wish we allowed children to develop and explore their empathy. It’s one of the most important traits a person can have. It’s so important for people to learn how to care for and about others even if we don’t know each-other personally. I don’t understand why we don’t allow people to lean into their empathetic sides. An apathetic and defeatist world is a deeply problematic one.

    7. It really is. I think what makes it worse is how frequently we’re seeing this sort of news. Thousands and thousands of people are losing their jobs in an already volatile and shitty job market. It’s also really sad to hear a real-life, living person address the situation in the way that the pilot did. It really just emphasizes how expansive the human cost of this is. It makes the loss/layoff statistics seem even more real.

      Delete
    8. That’s exactly what hit me too. Hearing it from someone actually living it just makes it feel a lot heavier and more real. It’s hard not to think about all the people behind those numbers. Careers, families, everything getting disrupted at once. And you’re right, it feels like this kind of news just keeps coming lately, which makes it even more unsettling. I really hope things stabilize soon, because this pace isn’t sustainable.

      Delete
    9. Exactly. It’s horrible enough to hear about how many people are losing their jobs but it makes it feel so much more devastating when real people actually talk about it publicly. Statistics and numbers make it sound way more impersonal and abstract. I see so many news articles and headlines that just share statistics but they don’t go into how this actually impacts people and their lives. I really hope it changes too. People can’t keep on going on like this.

The Spirit flights I took had sassy flight attendants who were absolutely on top of assholes not using headphones and super passive aggressive about it. I appreciated it so much

    3. Yup i will never get our stewardess after welcoming us aboard.

“And to those of you who said you would never fly Spirit again, welcome back.”

    4. mine said “if you’re interested in watching an array of content or browsing the internet with our wifi, too bad. you should have flown with someone else because we don’t have it!” and then she sang the star spangled banner

    5. Wait mine was so good! Said if you press the attendant button you’ll be ejected from the aircraft lol

    6. lmfao same. I recall mine, when giving the safety demonstration, mentioning that you should put on your oxygen mask before helping others.

Then he said, “Mom, Dad, that means you put on your mask before helping your child. And if you have two children, now’s the time to decide now which one you love more.” lol.

    7. That's awesome!

    8. I’ve heard this several times, I think it’s a script LOL

    9. Cue to my only spirit flight, the guy behind me was hitting his vape the whole time

    10. The one time I flew them I got one of their "first class seats" and listened to the flight attendants complain about the people in the back. And that one flight attenedant recent got barfed on because apparently in the back of the plans people get drunk and rowdy.

I enjoyed my 7 dollar top ramen and a buzz ball. And then never flew them again.

    11. Welp, now I'm almost disappointed I didn't book Spirit during the Delta meltdown a couple years ago. There were some "first class" seats open. Safely away from the Wade Boggs challenge. Close enough to hear the goss about it.

    12. My husband and I flew in the “first class” seats on our honeymoon and the flight attendant slipped my husband 3 Tito’s nips for free. Thanks Malachi, hope you’re faring well today.

    13. I was on a flight sat next to a guy that started getting violent after he started to get mad that he couldn’t sit in a seat that wasn’t assigned to him, ended up having to deplane and they brought in police to arrest him. The flight attendants were great and gave me 2 gins with soda for the trouble. I’m always worried about flying and got a 9 hour layover for my international flight just in case something went wrong, my friend who traveled with me only had a 30 minute layover. Take a guess who got to France a day earlier 🤣

    14. For those unfamiliar with Connecticut, nip = shooter fwiw.

    15. Omg so funny that you immediately clocked the CT. I had no idea that was a regional thing.

    16. We call them nips in VA too

    17. My Boston coworker told me about nips

    18. we can them nips in MA too lol

    19. Chicago also uses “nip”!!
Although my career was in the bar industry so my viewpoint may be a bit skewed lol

    20. lol thank you. I was envisioning the flight attendant with a liter of Tito's letting people take pulls off it.

    21. I told this story on a news article yesterday, but it’s too good not to share so I’m telling it again.

I fly to Vegas a lot for work and Spirit did these really cheap fly in Friday, fly out Sunday Las Vegas trips and I loved them so much. I mean, I had no choice but to take them because my work makes me choose the cheapest option, but I throughly enjoyed how every Friday flight in was basically a party bus in the sky and the Sunday return trip was like the long slog home post Spring break.

The flight attendants would have to repeat over and over and over that no outside alcohol could be consumed on the flight per FAA and people would do it anyway and get fined. People would throw things. People would openly vape. It was a total shit show.

RIP Spirit. I’m gonna miss the free entertainment.

    22. Dang, how long ago was that? lol

    23. The last time? A couple months ago. I fly to Vegas 3 or 4 times a year.

      Delete
    24. That’s interesting Spirit flight attendants are usually super strict about vaping if they see it

      Delete
    25. Ohhhh, the last time I saw vaping on a spirit flight was last summer. And no, the FAs didn’t do anything.

      Delete
    26. I took that round trip a few times too! Absolutely did vape in the back on the way home lol. Flight attendants would give one warning at most and then let it all play out— unless it was something the airline could upcharge for. Like they were very serious about counting and measuring your baggage

    27. I booked a carnival cruise just a week or so after 9/11 and it was like $80 for a week. People who seemingly were never in public made up the majority of the passengers

      lol I was shook p.

    28. I'm so mad I didn't know about this until now.

    29. I may have been on one of those Friday night flights a decade ago on my way to a buddy's bachelor party. It was the most amazing/horrible flight I have ever taken.

    30. Back in 2014 I was on one with a bachelorette party and everyone in the back was buying rounds of tequila shooters. Absolute mayhem

    32. Southwest was so happy when Spirit took that title away from them.

I feel a little bad for Southwest.

    33. With this and the removal of open seating they really don't have much going for them at this point

    34. There's still Frontier haha

    35. No one was asking "what if your dive bar could fly?", but I'm happy Spirit gave us the answer before flying off into those pearly gates.

    36. Awwww, thats sweet you think spirit is headed for the pearly gates.
