Tom Holland's Spider-Man returns to the MCU after Sony and Disney strike a deal
It's official: Spider-Man is coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
At the end of August, everyone and Jeff Goldblum panicked that Tom Holland's Spider-man might be leaving the MCU as a result of disputes between Sony and Disney. Reactions abound at the very timely D23 Expo, and Tom Holland's optimism made headlines.
"[A]ll I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man... The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler," Holland said at the time.
It turns out the superhero's future won't be so different after all. According to Variety, Sony and Marvel have reached an agreement to jointly deliver the highly anticipated third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Marvel president Kevin Feige producing.
Included in the announcement was confirmation that Holland would reprise his role as Spider-Man, and that the film will be also produced by Pascal Pictures, as was the case with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Holland's wall-crawler will also appear in one future Marvel film under the terms of the deal, though it's not clear which one.
Both Feige and Amy Pascal of Pascal pictures expressed excitement about the continuation of the Homecoming series in separate statements. Feige also teased the superhero's future in the MCU above and beyond the latest announcement.
"I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it," Feige said in a statement. "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."
Pascal's statement was cagier about the future, focusing instead on the excitement of the moment. "This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes," her statement read.
The third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming film series will hit theaters on July 16, 2021.

Good now people can finally shut up about it. You’d think the whole was coming to an end for some fans when all this drama went. 🙄
ReplyDeleteI believe I represent all xbox gamers when I say this is good news.
ReplyDeleteLOOOK OUT, HERE COMES THE SPIDER-MAN!!!
ReplyDeleteSpiderman: Welcome Home
ReplyDeleteWas he even really gone though. Was he.
ReplyDeletethey tried it
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!
ReplyDeleteim honestly shocked with this news due to Sony actually doing this, im not shocked that it happened though.
ReplyDeleteMy overall thought is that Marvels next move will be to buy spiderman and all characters associated with that character back from Sony. Just to avoid all of this nonsense again
Honestly I doubt Marvel is going to give away any of their IP under any circumstances anymore, not even for appearances in Sony’s movies. If anything, maybe they could work out an appearance of Venom in the MCU, but I think that could prove difficult considering there has already been a Venom movie.
ReplyDelete"Far From home is the most successful of Sonys, but with Marvels help."
Sure, but it’s still to Sony’s benefit.
is there a venom in the MCU?
ReplyDeleteNo and Sony owns the character rights. I don’t believe that’s included in this agreement but not certain. My assumption is that we’ll see a Tom Holland cameo/feature in the next Venom flick Sony makes based on this:
ReplyDeleteHe also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold.
DeleteI honestly think they left the Venom movie open enough to have him sneak into the MCU a bit, nothing says that they cant figure out a way.
ReplyDeleteBut would Marvel want to let a movie with a tomatometer of 29% into their cinematic universe?
ReplyDeleteconsidering that rottentomatoes does not reflect the fans overall appreciation of the movie I think they would honestly.
ReplyDeleteLets face it Venom was really good, imo. Tom Hardy did a really good job in that role for both Venom and Brock and the fact a second is being made with carnage no less, its a no brainer to want to weave that in some how.
Imagine the possibilities!
Maximum Carnage anyone?
I didn’t watch the movie, I was kind of turned off by the "limbless faceless thing rolling down the streets like a turd in the wind" ‘joke’ from the trailer that I guess was supposed to be funny but I found kind of disgusting and disturbing.
ReplyDeleteIll give you that, in the trailer the joke should have probably been absent BUT it did work in the movie.
ReplyDeleteId suggest a watch through and atleast give it a chance
I probably will at some point, but right now there are other movies higher on my list. I did watch the "Everything Wrong With" and "Everything Great About", though, if that counts at least a little.
ReplyDeleteVenom was pretty awful. Maximum Carnage would be even worse since the scope of what carnage was up to cant even be explored with the lack of a marvel universe to be affected. If Sony is smart they will make the Sinister 6 movie, change their target to Venom instead of Spiderman and have Carnage be a background story thread continuing into the third film where Carnage USA gets adapted with the Sinister 6 replacing The Avengers. Hell mish/mash Carnage/Seperation Anxiety into a story thread also to give Venom some depth and slow reveal what the symbiote, Carnage specifically, is really capable of.
ReplyDeleteBut going directly into Maximum Carnage at this point is just bound to be awful. Honestly, Carnage USA should be an Avengers movie.
