Apple confirms USB-C is coming to iPhone: 'We have no choice'

No matter the reason, the USB-C is finally coming to iPhones.

Apple will finally switch from Lightning to USB-C port on its iPhones.

The company did not officially announce anything, but its senior vice president of worldwide marketing all but confirmed it in an interview with The Wall Streeet Journal's Joanna Stern.

When asked whether Apple is moving to USB-C, Joswiak said "obviously we'll have to comply, we have no choice."

Joswiak is referring to a new set of regulations in the European Union, as well as in Brazil, which mandate the use of USB-C on smartphones. Apple has long resisted the idea, but now that the EU will actually start enforcing the law starting in 2024, the company will have to make the change if it wants to keep selling iPhones in the EU.

For users, this will simply mean most of their gadgets, whether made by Apple or some other company, will charge with the same cable.

Apple isn't too happy about this. "We think the approach would've been better environmentally, and better for our customers, for the governments to not be that prescriptive," said Joswiak.

What Joswiak wouldn't say, however, is when the switch is going to happen, exactly. "The Europeans are dictating timing for European customers," he said.

  1. Lighting port wasn't really needed when USB C became available, it was just another excuse for Apple to lock you in on their hardware and make more money.

    1. you must be very rough with your lightning cords. I’ve broken maybe 1.

    2. You don't seem to understand how laws concerning monopolies work. Also, lightning cables break often, more than USB C so one is forced to buy them more often. If you have multiple devices its nice to be able to charge them or connect them a computer without worrying about connector.

    3. By licensing, by selling their own products/accessories.

    4. No, but they have some valid points. When a company creates a standard just because they don't want yo use an existing standard and there is no significant technological advantage then its is considered a questionable tactic. Business laws are complex and try to protect companies and consumers. How much money has Apple made thru the years by forcing people to buy a lighting cable when they already had a USB C? Even worse now that the charger is not included. I agree that companies need freedoms to innovate, but, there has to be some balance that protects consumers.

    5. wrong. people are free to choose a phone with usb-c

    6. please don't tell me you regard the EU as some kind of arbiter of moral supremacy lol

      Delete
    7. Not an iPhone. Like all Apple products, they want to force you to buy their products all the way down to the cable. They do similar things with their computer ports, its a tactic that brings in lots of money, thats why the EU penalized them.

    8. unfortunately USB-C still has a litany of proprietary issues and no real standard.

Some send data significantly faster or slower, some don't send data, or will only receive data, and only work with certain devices still. It's insanity but at least now we don't have to flip the thing around 20 times before we find out it's not the *right* USB-C

    9. The issue with the EU (which has laws that are more strict than jn the USA) is that it finds certain actions from Apple to be monopolistic. They are also in problems because they didn't provide a charger.

    10. Governments obviously are free to dictate commerce based on the consumer’s needs and wants. Apple wants to do what Apple wants to do. It didn’t work that way this time

      Delete
    11. Cables and chargers are available third party and cheap for Apple.

      Delete
    12. also, I fail to recognize how a company with less than 25% overall electronics market share is a monopoly

      Delete
    13. wrong again. people are free to buy a different computer. governments have no business dictating to companies if the issue isn't about health or safety.

    15. consumers are free to make other choices. the government has no role.

    16. oh my god a $9 cord is such a hardship when you own a $900+ phone 😢 Consumers are protected by being free to choose a different phone.

  2. Oh so they dont like it when you have no choice... after giving their entire customer base no choice but to buy their proprietary chargers.

    1. Lots of third party apple chargers.

  3. Ah yes. That’s was EU’s most pressing issue. A freaking usb charger… Now I have a common standard for chargers and yet for ex. banks still can take 3 days to process money transfers and process refunds for 45 like in 1975. But yes. The charger was the big technology problem requiring regulation.

    2. I think you are confusing banking issues with technological ones. I've worked at a bank doing wire transfers and we got those things done in less than 24 hours. Even when routed to other countries.

    3. you can. With the right adapter

    4. Bluetooth headphones cost $5

      Delete
    5. Wait, Apple doesn't let you do that?!?!🙃

      Delete
  6. Probably might sell the battery separately?

    ReplyDelete
  7. That's good, that charger served no purpose, but to increase the profit margins for Apple.

    ReplyDelete
  8. If someone was smart enough, they would make an adapter that functions with all Apple USBs (past to present). If Apple was truly intelligent, they would stick with they know (sorta) and STOP trying to improve something they clearly failed at and is critical to their phone's performance... a functional battery. If you can't do it right, then don't do it all !!! Forcing people to buy or fly is a strong form of discrimination.

  9. 😂 The CEO's environmental argument makes no sense. You would think a universal charger would cause less waste

    ReplyDelete
  10. And will they supply them and plugs with the phones? I bet they don’t

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. nope - the EU mandated it to people will have fewer chords and less environmental waste. So in keeping with the EU philosophy - you should already have all you need. Not by Apple’s direction either

  11. But….. my iPhone 11 has it? How is this news?

  12. I’m all for not needing two chargers and I’m also for government (like the EU) not micromanaging companies.

    2. since when is this about public safety? It’s the EU Single Market, to access it you have to abide by its rules.

    3. since when is ordering companies to demand fundamental design changes which have nothing to do with public safety not intrusive and overreaching?

  13. Maybe Apple will be check your and provide a dongle in the box

  19. They can always invent USB-D...

...oh wait. Apple has been riding everyone else's coattails since 2015. 🙃🤔🙃🤔🙃

  20. My MacBook Air from 3 years ago ONLY has USB-C ports. Even the power ports. So does my iPad. And there are have always third party cables and chargers for Apple.

    ReplyDelete
  21. They theoretically could sell an EU only model…but it would limit flexibility.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I already have it so it’s not coming it’s here already only
Thing is with your new phone you don’t get the plug

    ReplyDelete
  23. But is it just in European countries or worldwide?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Most likely worldwide. EU made the ruling, but it doesn't make financial sense for Apple to design, source parts for, and manufacture two different (but the same model) iPhones every year.

  24. Good! Ridiculous proprietary lightning connector and slow USB2.0 speeds. Glad to see the back of it!
