'The Acolyte's cancellation is a huge mistake for Star Wars

What are we even doing anymore?

For seven glorious weeks in June and July, I was excited about Star Wars again, and it was all thanks to The Acolyte.

Created by Leslye Headland, the latest Star Wars series was a breath of fresh air for a franchise whose biggest live-action TV offerings had mostly devolved into stale Easter egg hunts. (Looking at you, The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.) While The Acolyte certainly wasn't without its own Easter eggs, it was also primarily original material.

We got our first taste of the High Republic Era in live-action Star Wars, as well as new heroes in twins Mae and Osha (both played by Amandla Stenberg), and a new Sith Lord in the Stranger (Manny Jacinto). A cast of mostly original characters and a lack of gratuitous Skywalker cameos kept The Acolyte feeling fresh from week to week, as did its no-holds-barred action sequences, hints of enemies-to-lovers romance, and interrogation of the Jedi Order. By the time the finale rolled around, teasing exciting new possibilities for the show's future, I was locked in and burning for more.

But on Tuesday, Deadline reported that Lucasfilm would not be renewing The Acolyte for a second season. According to the publisher, citing "sources", the reasoning was ratings-based, with the season finale drawing what is believed to be the lowest minutes viewed for a Star Wars finale.

The cancellation might make sense from a numbers standpoint, as The Acolyte's budget was reportedly $180 million for eight episodes. (Never mind that a Star Wars show with fewer connections to existing IP was always going to be a riskier bet.) But from a storytelling standpoint, the decision does a major disservice to Star Wars going forward. It sends the unfortunate message that any attempts at original storytelling will be sidelined in favor of more self-referential slogs. Nothing new is allowed, nor is any show given the chance to grow past its first season unless it's an instant smash hit. So why even bother getting invested in a new Star Wars series in the first place? (Notably, Andor, the best Star Wars series, was guaranteed a Season 2 from the jump. Could you imagine if its low viewership resulted in an Acolyte-style cancellation?)

'The Acolyte' gave me hope for the future of Star Wars. Now, I'm not so sure.

The loss of The Acolyte is also a blow to its audience, many of whom, like me, saw the series as a way to reconnect with a franchise that had otherwise lost their trust and interest. Whether people were seeing themselves in The Acolyte's diverse cast or rejoicing in Star Wars actually embracing an enemies-to-lovers romance, it was a joy to watch viewers geek out every week over the show's every twist and turn.

Of course, there is a nasty flip side to that fandom. Bigoted, so-called Star Wars "fans" took every opportunity to attack the series with racist, sexist, and homophobic rhetoric, all because The Acolyte dared center women and people of color. Stenberg has been a target for this vitriol since her role in the show was announced, the same kind of racist attacks Star Wars actors like John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and Moses Ingram faced before her. Following the cancellation announcement, comments on Stenberg's social media have been a parade of hateful gloating. (Thankfully, there is still quite a bit of support.) Clearly, this subset of the Star Wars audience views The Acolyte's cancellation as a moral victory and as proof that Star Wars remains "theirs."

That Lucasfilm and Disney did little to speak out against this hate during The Acolyte's run speaks volumes. That they continue to push aside audience members eager for something new speaks volumes too. As one of those audience members, The Acolyte gave me hope for the future of Star Wars. Now, I'm not so sure.

The Acolyte Season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.

  2. Huge mistake is believe that letting people who doesn't know, care or love source material can create good products. Huge mistake is believe that changing, contradicting and mutilating the lore of a beloved saga for ideological purposes could be well received. Huge mistake is believe that swifting from entertaining audiences to lectured them is gonna be profitable.

  6. Making it was the mistake. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. I think Hollywood should prioritize on making great things.. When people spend more money than sending man to space on trashy productions and then the same people complain about people going to space and not using the money to fix poverty 🫢

  7. Mashable.... 😆 . Anyway, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but besides that it's as easy as comprehend that Disney is a company and they care about profit, this show was failure. Some people liked it but the majority didn't, and we've all experienced that a show we liked got cancelled in our life... making this cancellation a big of a deal, gaslighting others opinions, or plainly hating at anyone who didn't like it and blaming them it's insane.

  19. This show’s lack of success (not taking into account that massive budget) had nothing to do with it being from a completely different part of the timeline than the majority of the Star Wars stories. If anything, that was the only this had going for it. The story itself was a real clunker. The characters were very forgettable. For me any way, this was the first Str Wars series that I had zero interest in re-watching.

Rogue One, Andor, The Mandalorian and even Rebels should prove that there is fan interest for shows made outside of the main timeline and for the most part not being dependent on characters from the original trilogy. The difference between those movies/shows and this series was that those all contained interesting and well written and directed stories.

  20. Best move ever by Disney. Poor execution and the female lead definitely lacked any type of likability whatsoever. The show was poorly put together over eight episodes and really could’ve been a 45 minute episode with the plot line done correctly. Sith returning before episode one and another verge in the force. Can’t anyone think of any original plot lines besides going back to the well? I wanted this to work, but between the acting and the storyline, it just was not properly executed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If a large portion of the audience didn't like it, and are not watching it, there is no point continuing to make it, studios cancel lots of shows that have higher audiances and fanbases. The few haters complaining won't lower audiance veiwership, so it can't have made that much of an impact on the cancellation, so stop saying hating "woke" means anything. That said, I still didn't like the writing at all. Changing Lucas' work where "Light/Good" are selfless and should be encouraged, and "Dark/Bad" is selfish and shouldn't be admired, Sith are not anti-heroes. The Mandalorian, Rogue One and Andor showed how to write Star Wars and be new the right way.

  24. Let me ask you, let’s say you went to a restaurant and the chef personality made 2 steak dishes for you. The first is a recipe that he’s perfected and worked long hours to make it taste amazing with complimentary sides and the second has ingredients other groups and parties like. they removed the things they didn’t like and added what they did like, one likes gummy bears, one likes ketchup, one likes ramen, one is vegan so you lose the steak, in the end you’re stuck with a mess that looks appetizing to only those few who changed to original to fit their tastes. Which one would you eat?

    ReplyDelete
  25. They should’ve made it a movie along with boba fett and kenobi. All 3 of these shows suffer from awkward pacing. The Acolyte especially suffered from withholding character motivations until the end so it was really hard to care about anyone.

    1. this is what killed it, imo. The first 4 episodes were just bizarre in terms of any of the characters acting and reacting the way they did. Rescuing it with a long flashback at the end did make the overall story more comprehensible. But, it was a terrible choice to do that.

  26. The show was not good at all, the Special Effects were ok, but the script was very lacking. Some people that I am reading believe that it is because bigots the show failed, IMO, the diverse writers/producers/directors are creating a lot of negative reactions because they try to show being diverse as something “special”… it is not, it is just part of human nature; being woman, black, LGTBI+ etc is not a superpower, just makes you human.

Bare minimum The Acolyte gave us and interesting set of new characters, an amazing new villain, and some of the best light saber sequences we have ever seen. 7. now if we can just keep on telling Disney how it is maybe the Actual movies will get better they need to retire Rey and they totally messed up Luke for me in that last movie adding comedy didn't help either.

  112. They had a lot to overcome with world building a new era for the first time in live action. They did have e to deal with a lot of toxic fans as well. But overall it died because the acting was comically bad and all around not good in any way.

  113. Totally looking forward to seeing the rest… I saw two episodes, and kinda liked it, it felt like Star Wars, now it feels like it doesn’t matter.

  114. The premise was interesting, but it just seemed poorly written. Acting in particular was just awful, but with no content, it would seem to be a tough execution for any actor. Almost as bad as Reva Sevander in Obi-Wan Kenobi. 😂

  115. It was a mistake from the get-go. Hopefully, they will create better shows from this generous universe.

  116. Looks like they realized that they could expand and provide better quality in Andor.. u can't continue to water down the market as well, too much of a good thing and all that

  117. The show was laughably bad and full of contempt for Star Wars and SW values.

    ReplyDelete
  118. No it was not.
Creating the show was a mistake.
Getting rid of it was a great decision

  119. No, it isn’t! It was bad. Not because of the actors but because the writing was incredibly bad. If they want to keep it they need a new writing team and new runners.

  120. really? the quiestion is if is it a mistake? xD

  121. Its not a mistake if nobody watched it

  122. The fans have already rendered their verdict on what the mistake was

    1. Disney's tactic of always blaming the fans (their costomers) for their bad writing must stop....
It was cancelled because it was losing money and losing important viewers ..
If they write better stories they will have success...
This "was" a well established Franchise, with a huge fan base... The fact that Disney's version of Star Wars does not work is Disney's fault, and not the fans...

  123. Outstanding news!

Best news from Star Wars since the awfully written, scripted, and directed series began. Worst production since the Sequel Trilogy and X-Mas Special with a $22M per Episode price tag.

Never felt like a Star Wars story but definitely felt like a Kathleen Kennedy production. Glad it's over. Best thing for the brand is to make non canon like Star Wars Visions and move on in a direction that builds continuity with what came before, respects canon, and finally leads like all the games, novels, comics, and animation have been doing.

Productions like Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor are more the way. Skeleton Crew with the Goonies meets the Last Star Fighter vibes is much better grounded story telling then the cluncky messy nonesense just experienced.

  124. This article misses the point: most people (including me and everyone I know) thought this show was poor, which is why it had low viewership, which is what led to its cancellation. Disney backed the show, so I’m sure they would have renewed it… if only it had enough viewers. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  125. It wouldn't have been the least viewed Disney Star Wars show if it was worth watching, the target audience didn't even stick around to see the series throughout. $180 million is a lot of money for a show that only cracked the Nielsen streaming ratings for 3 episodes and now everyone is all upset about it. Bob Igers corporate accountant has spoken, they sending the Acolyte off to the Willow universe now!!

  126. Dear God. What a disaster Star Wars has become.

  127. Most people hated it with all their guts. How can it be a mistake ?

  128. The show was so disappointing it didn’t include any vegan Jedis or a vegan theme. Also lacking aliens like the Oompa Loompas, poor inclusivity indeed 😂😂😂

  129. I feel like you guys write articles to troll people lol CLEARLY the metrics around the show were awful and then the show’s producers/ execs rile up the fans … lol what could possibly go wrong? I watched a couple of episodes.. it was bad …

  130. The author does have a point here, true fanaticals will take any level of crap and still cheer for "their" show. Anyone who is the least bit critical is not a true fan, period.

However, it is that true-fan lack of objectivity that leads to the delusional verbal diatribe that is this article.

Nobody watched the show because it was objectively crap, deal with it, move on.

  131. This was the best thing they have put out in some time. Very disappointed to hear they canceled it. I look forward to more k.o.t.o.r. based content

  132. I disagree... This show wasn't good and canceling was the right choice!

  133. It was the right thing, to cancel.

  134. It was seriously the worst of Star Wars. So many plot holes.

  135. Making these show is the worst thing that happened in the star wars universe because it breaks everything
